Windows 10 folder problems can come from File Explorer, permissions, a disconnected drive, OneDrive, search, or storage damage—not just a fault with folders themselves. Start by identifying whether the issue affects one folder or everything, and whether the location is on your PC, an external drive, a network, or OneDrive. If the files matter, protect them before running repairs or changing permissions.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still works, but ordinary free Windows updates, security fixes, and technical support have ended. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information.

Identify what kind of folder problem you have

Use the symptom to choose a troubleshooting path instead of applying every fix in order. A folder that is absent from search is not necessarily deleted, and a OneDrive cloud icon does not by itself mean a file is lost.

Symptom Areas to check first
File Explorer will not open Explorer process, Windows system files, user profile, or available storage
Explorer freezes in one folder Disconnected network drive, large folder, thumbnail or preview handling, cloud placeholder, or disk/file-system problem
A folder seems to be missing Hidden items, changed folder location, wrong account, OneDrive redirection, or disconnected drive
“Access denied” Folder permissions, ownership, encryption, administrator restrictions, or network permissions
“The file or folder does not exist” Stale shortcut or Quick access pin, moved item, unavailable share, or changed drive letter
Cannot move, rename, or delete an item File in use, permissions, OneDrive sync, invalid name, or file-system issue
Search cannot find a file Search scope, indexing, or content stored online rather than locally
OneDrive item will not open OneDrive status, Files On-Demand, account or storage problem, or sync error
Folder views or icons look wrong Folder-view settings, Explorer cache, or folder customization
Operations across folders are slow or hang Drive health, security software, Explorer extensions, or Windows system corruption

Protect files and try the low-risk checks first

  • Do not format a drive, delete unfamiliar system files, or reset Windows as a first step. If important files are still accessible, copy them to a separate drive or other safe location before making repairs.
  • If a drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, reports read errors, or is getting slower, stop repeatedly retrying operations. Prioritize backing up or imaging it; repair scans can add stress to a failing drive.
  • Restart Windows, then press Windows key + E to test File Explorer. Check whether the issue affects one folder, one drive, one account, or all locations.
  • Identify whether the folder is on the internal drive, an external USB drive, a network share, or OneDrive. Check free space and install any Windows updates still offered to the device, then restart.

Restart File Explorer

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Under Processes, select Windows Explorer, then select Restart.
  3. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

This can restore the desktop shell or recover Explorer windows, but it cannot repair a damaged drive, change folder permissions, or recover deleted files.

If a folder is missing

Check hidden items and the folder’s full path

In File Explorer, select View > Hidden items to show ordinary hidden files and folders. For more settings, select View > Options > Change folder and search options, then use the View tab. Microsoft documents these Windows controls at View hidden files and folders in Windows.

Do not delete unfamiliar items just because they appear after showing hidden files. Avoid clearing Hide protected operating system files unless there is a specific reason: it can expose files whose removal may destabilize Windows.

To distinguish a broken shortcut from a missing folder, press Windows key + R and try a known path such as %USERPROFILE%, %USERPROFILE%Documents, %USERPROFILE%Downloads, or C:. You can also type the full path in File Explorer’s address bar. If the path opens but its Quick access entry fails, remove and recreate the pin rather than editing the registry.

Check the account, drive, and folder location

Confirm you are signed into the expected Windows account. A temporary or different profile can make the usual Desktop, Documents, or Downloads contents appear to vanish. For Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, or Videos, check the folder’s actual location before creating another folder with the same name. Its location may have changed through OneDrive Known Folder Move, a manual change, a profile migration, an upgrade or restore, or a disconnected drive.

For OneDrive-managed folders, distinguish the local folder path from the cloud copy and from an online-only Files On-Demand placeholder. If an external drive is involved, check whether it is connected and whether its drive letter changed. If Windows labels the drive RAW or asks you to format it, do not format it if its data matters.

If File Explorer freezes, crashes, or will not start

After restarting Explorer and Windows, check whether a particular large folder, preview pane, thumbnail generation, antivirus software, or a third-party Explorer extension triggers the freeze. A problem isolated to one folder or drive points away from a general Explorer failure; a problem across locations can warrant Windows component checks.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 File Explorer troubleshooting guidance includes checking for updates, restarting, Disk Cleanup, System Maintenance, system-file checks, and recovery options. Use the least disruptive relevant step first; startup repair or reset is not an appropriate first response to a single inaccessible folder.

Repair Windows system files with DISM, then SFC

Use these commands when Explorer trouble may be caused by damaged Windows components, not as a way to restore user documents or fix permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish.
  3. Then run sfc /scannow. Keep the window open until verification reaches 100%.
  4. Restart Windows and test Explorer again.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide files needed to repair Windows components. See Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. If Windows Update is broken, Microsoft’s guidance covers using a specified repair source.

  • No integrity violations: SFC did not detect system-file corruption.
  • Corrupt files repaired: restart and retest.
  • Some files could not be repaired: review the CBS log and consider more advanced recovery.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: retrying in Safe Mode or using recovery options may be appropriate.

To extract SFC entries from the CBS log to a desktop file, run findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt".

If Windows says “Access denied”

For a personal local folder you are entitled to use, right-click it and select Properties > Security. Select the relevant user or group to review its permissions. Use Edit only if that account should legitimately have access. To inspect ownership, select Advanced.

Taking ownership or granting full control is not a universal fix. It can weaken security or break expected access controls. Do not apply broad permission changes to C:Windows, C:Program Files, another person’s profile, encrypted data, network shares, or folders managed by a school or employer. On an organizational device, the administrator controlling the computer, server, SharePoint site, or policy may need to restore access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An administrator may use the following commands on a personal local folder when ownership is genuinely wrong, but they recursively change permissions throughout the target tree. Check the path carefully and back up important data first:

takeown /f "C:PathToFolder" /r /d y
icacls "C:PathToFolder" /grant "%USERNAME%":F /t

For OneDrive permission errors, Microsoft’s guidance describes reviewing Properties > Security > Edit and restarting: What do the OneDrive error codes mean?

If files cannot be moved, renamed, or deleted

  1. Close the file in every application. Also close preview panes, media players, and programs that may be using it.
  2. If it is synchronizing, pause or exit OneDrive temporarily, then retry.
  3. Restart Windows and try again.
  4. Review the folder’s permissions and confirm the location is available.
  5. For a OneDrive or SharePoint-synced item, check its name. Microsoft lists these characters as invalid: " * : < > ? / |. Leading or trailing spaces are also disallowed; reserved names include CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0–COM9, and LPT0–LPT9. These are sync rules, not a complete list of Windows or NTFS path limits. See OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations.
  6. Rename in File Explorer by selecting the item and pressing F2.

If a local item still cannot be changed, check for file-system errors before trying elevated command-line operations. Microsoft’s older File and Folder Troubleshooter covered copy, move, rename, delete, Recycle Bin, folder-view, selection, and some network-share problems, but Microsoft identifies the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool as deprecated. Do not rely on it as a current, future-proof fix: Microsoft’s File and Folder Troubleshooter information.

If OneDrive folders or cloud files are the problem

Check the account and sync state

  • Confirm the OneDrive cloud icon appears in the notification area and that the correct personal or work/school account is signed in.
  • Check whether syncing is paused and whether the account has available storage.
  • For a cloud-icon file, check whether it is online-only. Try opening it from OneDrive on the web to see whether the cloud copy is present.
  • OneDrive errors can result from a file being in use, invalid names, OneDrive not running, or Files On-Demand failing to start. Work/school accounts may also be subject to administrator restrictions.

A cloud-only placeholder can mean the content has not been downloaded to this PC; it does not, by itself, mean the cloud file was lost. If online-only items will not open, update Windows and OneDrive, check that security software is not blocking Files On-Demand, and verify available local disk space. In OneDrive settings, try Free up disk space or Download all files as appropriate for your connection and storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset OneDrive if sync remains stuck

First verify important files are present in the cloud or backed up elsewhere. Then press Windows key + R and try:

%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset

If Windows cannot find the program, try one of these paths:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset

Launch OneDrive again from Start. Microsoft says reset does not delete files or data, but it disconnects existing sync connections and may require choosing synced folders again. Unsynchronized local files still need protection; do not assume a reset will upload them. See Microsoft’s OneDrive error-code guidance.

If Windows Search cannot find a file

Search from This PC rather than only the open folder, then search the likely drive directly. Try part of the name or an extension such as *.pdf, *.docx, or *.jpg. Check OneDrive on the web if the file should be synchronized. Newly created files may take time to appear in indexed results.

Windows Search uses indexing to make searches faster and can search local PC and OneDrive content; review its settings if the search scope is wrong. Microsoft explains search and indexing at Find your files and apps in Windows. Rebuilding or waiting for an index can help locate existing indexed content; it cannot restore deleted files or retrieve content from a disconnected, encrypted, or unavailable location.

Check storage and file-system health carefully

Before a disk check, protect important files if the drive is readable. For a logical file-system check on a drive, open an administrator Command Prompt and run chkdsk C: /f, replacing C: with the correct drive letter. For a deeper scan that checks sectors, chkdsk C: /r can take hours. If Windows asks to schedule the check at the next restart, enter Y and restart. Microsoft’s OneDrive error guidance also documents chkdsk <volume> /R /F and notes that a scan may take several hours: OneDrive error codes.

CHKDSK can address logical file-system problems; it cannot repair physical drive failure. If the disk clicks, disappears, produces worsening read errors, or becomes increasingly slow, stop repeated scans and prioritize data recovery. Never use formatting as a shortcut when the files matter.

When to use recovery or get help

If the problem affects Windows broadly after the lower-risk checks and system-file repair, use Windows recovery options such as Startup Repair or System Restore where appropriate. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance includes Automatic Repair and recovery paths: Fix File Explorer if it won’t open or start. Back up before resetting Windows; the result for applications, settings, and files depends on the recovery option selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For external drives, inspect whether the drive appears in Disk Management and whether the cable, port, power, and drive letter are stable. For network shares, verify the correct network or VPN, server availability, path, saved credentials, and current permissions. A locked BitLocker drive requires its unlock method or recovery key; a Windows folder repair does not bypass encryption.

Stop and seek qualified help if important files are missing without a backup, a drive appears RAW, the storage device shows physical-failure symptoms, encryption credentials are unavailable, or an employer/school manages the account or device. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not recover deleted or overwritten documents.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A PC can continue to run, but ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes have ended. For recurring Explorer or folder problems, moving to a supported operating system is a prudent longer-term step; available extended-security options depend on edition, location, and enrollment and are not assumed here. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information.
