Steam status: what the latest available snapshot showed
The August 18, 2026 snapshot listed these Steam services as Normal. Its time of day and time zone were not stated, and the report may no longer reflect conditions now.

“Steam is down” can mean a single feature is failing. A working Store does not prove a game’s matchmaking is healthy; a failed Store does not necessarily stop an installed game from launching. Downloads, Steam Cloud, login, and individual Game Coordinators can have different conditions.

How to check whether Steam is down
- Check SteamStatus. Open steamstat.us and look at the specific component and region relevant to the problem.
- Check Steam Support. Steam Support offers troubleshooting, but it is not a public real-time incident dashboard.
- Look for a pattern in user reports. Downdetector’s Steam page can show whether other users are reporting trouble. These are crowdsourced reports, not confirmed Valve outages; a new or regional problem may be missed, and local connectivity trouble can create a spike.
- Compare client and browser. Try Steam in a browser as well as in the desktop client. If one works and the other does not, that narrows the problem but does not prove its cause.
- Compare networks and services. Test unrelated websites, then try Steam through another connection, such as a phone hotspot. This can help distinguish a general internet or ISP problem from an issue on one network path.
- Check whether one game or all Steam features fail. If Store, downloads, and Community work but one game does not, check that game’s publisher or developer status channels.
Steam Support lists maintenance, local network trouble, ISP issues, network configuration, and conflicting programs among possible causes of client connection trouble. Its sign-in and connection troubleshooting flow is the first-party place to investigate account or client access.
Steam is up, but I still cannot connect
Use the symptom and first test below to narrow the possibilities. No single test establishes the cause by itself.

Login or Steam Guard problems
First distinguish an incorrect password or Steam Guard code from a service or connection problem. If you see an account lock, suspected hijacking, or security intervention, use Steam’s sign-in recovery flow rather than repeatedly submitting credentials. VPNs, proxies, firewalls, antivirus software, DNS, and ISP routing can also affect access. Steam notes that its client accesses accounts differently from a web browser; follow its official sign-in troubleshooting for the next steps.
Store, Community, friends, chat, or Workshop trouble
These features can be impaired separately from downloads or installed games. A blank Store page may be a client loading problem, a network path issue, or a Store-side fault. Compare the browser and client, then check the Store and Community components on the status page rather than assuming all of Steam is offline.

Slow or stalled downloads
When other Steam features load normally, a download problem may be specific to a content server or download region. In the client, go to Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region, select a nearby alternative, and restart the download. This is a routing test for downloads, not a fix for login, Store, Community, or account-service failures.
One game or its matchmaking is unavailable
Steam platform services, Valve-operated Game Coordinators, and a publisher’s own game servers are separate pieces. Matchmaking, inventory, statistics, anti-cheat, or authentication for a title may fail while the rest of Steam works. Steam Deck or client-specific problems
A problem confined to Steam Deck or to one computer does not by itself establish a Steam backend outage. Compare another Steam device or the website, and check whether other network services work on the affected device. A device-specific client or network issue remains possible even when Steam’s broad services appear normal.

- Identify the failing component. Check the current status page and note whether the issue is login, Store, Community, downloads, or one game.
- Wait briefly and retry once. A transient issue may clear. Avoid repeatedly submitting login attempts or purchases while a service or checkout problem is suspected.
- Fully exit and restart Steam. On Windows, right-click the Steam icon in the system tray and choose Exit, then reopen the client. This can clear a stuck client process but will not repair a server outage.
- Compare browser and network. Test Steam in a browser, open unrelated sites, and, if available, try a second network. Restart the router only if other network services are failing too.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy if appropriate. A VPN or proxy can affect routing or trigger extra security checks. Change it only if safe for your situation, and restore your normal protection and settings afterward.
- For download trouble, change region. Use Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region and test a nearby alternative.
- For a stuck download, clear its cache if needed. Use Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. Steam may sign you out, and temporary download data is removed, so be ready to authenticate again. This does not fix a Steam-wide outage.
- For one game that will not launch, verify its files. In the Library, right-click the game and choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. This checks local files; it cannot fix a game-server outage, account restriction, or unavailable third-party launcher.
- Use offline mode only for eligible games. Choose Steam → Go Offline. It may let you play some installed single-player games that were prepared for offline use. Multiplayer, Community, cloud synchronization, online authentication, and games requiring an online launcher will not be restored.
- Contact Steam Support for account or persistent client issues. Use the Steam sign-in and connection flow rather than assuming a service outage is an account problem.
If a game was saved locally while Steam Cloud was unavailable, do not assume the save has synchronized. Check the game’s local-save behavior and confirm cloud status after Steam recovers before relying on another device’s copy.

If a purchase appears to fail during an incident, check Steam purchase history and your bank or card authorization before trying again. Repeated checkout attempts can leave uncertainty about whether a charge or order went through.
Does Steam go down every Tuesday?
Steam maintenance is commonly observed on Tuesday evenings, but it is not a guaranteed outage window. SteamDB describes the typical start as around 7 p.m. Eastern Time / 11 p.m. UTC, with interruptions often lasting roughly 15–30 minutes. These are third-party descriptions of a recurring pattern, not Valve’s promise of a fixed start time, duration, or set of affected services. See SteamDB’s maintenance guidance.
How long will a Steam outage last?
There is no reliable universal duration. A brief maintenance interruption may pass quickly; an unplanned incident can vary in length, and a regional network issue may persist even after Steam’s services recover. Use the live component and regional reports to see whether conditions are changing rather than relying on a fixed estimate.
