On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, Control Center can be edited directly: add controls, remove them, drag them into a new order, resize tiles, and create separate sections. Apple’s current detailed guide is labeled for iOS 26, while Apple describes the redesigned customization as available in iOS 18 and later.
Open Control Center

On Face ID models, starting near the top center can open Notification Center instead. Begin at the far-right edge. In the redesigned interface, continue swiping vertically or tap the icons along the right edge to move among groups such as media, Home controls, connectivity and other sections. Enter editing mode
- Open Control Center.
- Tap the Add button (a plus icon) in the upper-left corner.
- Alternatively, touch and hold an empty area of Control Center.
The icon’s appearance can vary with language and software presentation, but it is the add/edit control described by Apple.
Add a control
- Enter editing mode.
- Tap Add a Control at the bottom.
- Browse or scroll through the gallery, then tap a control to place it.
The gallery is not limited to Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Flashlight, brightness and volume. Depending on your iPhone, iOS version, installed apps, accessories and enabled features, it may include Dark Mode, Magnifier, Hearing Aids, Guided Access, accessibility actions, shortcuts and app controls. A listed control can open a quick action, system panel or associated app rather than functioning as a full standalone app. If a control is absent, check whether its related feature, app, accessory or setting is available on your device.

Remove a control
- Open Control Center and enter edit mode.
- Tap the control’s Remove button in its upper-left corner.
- Repeat for any other controls, then close Control Center.
Removing a tile does not uninstall an app or turn off the underlying iPhone feature. You can usually restore it later through Add a Control; availability can still depend on the feature or accessory.
Move and rearrange controls
- Enter edit mode.
- Touch and hold a control.
- Drag it to the desired position and release when the layout shows the new placement.
Put daily actions in the first group and related controls together. The grid and each tile’s current size determine where it can fit; resize the tile or move neighboring controls if a preferred position is unavailable.
Resize controls
- Enter edit mode.
- Find the resize handle at the control’s lower-right corner.
- Drag the handle to enlarge or reduce the tile.
Larger tiles are easier to tap and may expose more information, while smaller ones fit more actions on a page. Apple does not specify one universal size range for every control, so available dimensions can differ.

Create and use additional sections
Control Center is page-based rather than one fixed grid. Swipe vertically through it or tap the right-edge page icons to move between groups.
Create a section from the page controls
- Tap the lowest circular page icon on the right edge.
- Tap Add a Control.
- Select the controls for the new group.
Create a section by dragging
While editing, drag a control off the bottom of the current page. Control Center creates another section for it.
Separate connectivity, media, smart-home, accessibility, travel or work tools according to how you use them. Keep the first section focused on actions needed every day and place occasional controls later.

Use long-press actions before adding more tiles
Touching and holding many controls reveals additional commands. Apple’s examples include holding the connectivity group for AirDrop options, Camera for selfie, video or portrait actions, and the brightness control for display options. Touch and hold the Control Center power button until you feel haptic feedback, then drag the slider to power off the iPhone. These menus can provide secondary actions without permanently occupying another tile. More examples are in Apple’s quick actions guide.
Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth buttons do not fully switch off the radios
Important: Tapping Wi‑Fi in Control Center temporarily disconnects the iPhone from its current Wi‑Fi network; it does not fully disable Wi‑Fi. AirPlay and AirDrop can continue working, and the phone may reconnect to known networks after a location change or restart. For a complete shutdown, use Settings > Wi‑Fi.
Bluetooth behaves similarly: its Control Center button temporarily disconnects accessories rather than fully disabling Bluetooth. To switch Bluetooth off completely, use Settings > Bluetooth. Apple documents both behaviors in the User Guide.

Stop Control Center opening inside apps
- Open Settings.
- Tap Control Center.
- Turn off Access Within Apps.
This prevents accidental swipes during games, video playback or drawing, but you will lose convenient in-app access and must open Control Center from a permitted context instead.

- Tap Add a Control.
- Browse accessibility categories and tap the feature you need.
Apple lists options including Accessibility Shortcuts, Magnifier, Hearing Aids and Guided Access, along with hearing, mobility and vision features. See Apple’s Accessibility Shortcut page and the accessibility controls guide. Hearing-related options can also be managed at Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Control Center.
Example: add Dark Mode
- Touch and hold an empty area of Control Center.
- Tap Add a Control.
- Select Dark Mode.
Alternatively, touch and hold the brightness control and choose Dark Mode. Apple’s instructions are in Use Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad.

Troubleshooting
There is no Add button
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 18 or later.
- Open Control Center fully and check the upper-left corner.
- Make sure you are viewing the current editable Control Center page.
- If the interface still differs, follow the device-specific Apple guide rather than an older Settings path.
A desired control is missing
- Enter edit mode and open Add a Control.
- Scroll through the entire gallery, including accessibility categories.
- Check whether the feature requires an enabled service, compatible accessory, installed app or configured setting.
- Try a long press on an existing control for the action you want.
The swipe opens Notification Center
On a Face ID iPhone, start at the extreme top-right edge, not near the top center.
A control will not fit
Resize it with the lower-right handle, move adjacent controls, or place it in another section. Grid space and tile size affect placement.
Control Center opens accidentally
Turn off Settings > Control Center > Access Within Apps.
Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth still seems active
That is expected after using the Control Center buttons: they generally disconnect temporarily. Use the corresponding Settings page for a full shutdown.

The expanded editor is documented for iOS 18 and later. Older software may not show the Add button or page-based editor; update iOS when your model supports it.
Close Control Center
On Face ID models, swipe up from the bottom center. On models with a Home button, press the Home button.
