What WhatsApp dark mode changes
Dark mode changes WhatsApp’s backgrounds, chat surfaces, panels, menus, and controls to darker colors. It is a visual preference: it does not change message delivery, account features, privacy settings, or notifications.
Meta introduced the design to make WhatsApp more comfortable to read in low light and reduce the glare of a bright interface. Comfort varies by person, and dark mode is not a medical treatment or a guarantee against eye strain.
A chat wallpaper is separate from the app theme. The theme controls the overall interface, while wallpaper controls the background inside a conversation. A bright custom wallpaper can therefore make an otherwise dark chat look lighter.

Enable dark mode on Android
Use a fixed dark theme
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Chats.
- Tap Theme.
- Select Dark.
- Tap OK if your version asks for confirmation.
This keeps WhatsApp dark even when the rest of the phone is using a light appearance.
Make WhatsApp follow Android
Some Android builds offer System default, Automatic, or similar wording in WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Theme. Choose that option to synchronize WhatsApp with the phone’s appearance.
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Open Display (the exact label varies by manufacturer and Android version).
- Turn on Dark theme.
Google notes that menus differ between devices. On some phones, Battery Saver can also trigger a dark color scheme; that is device behavior rather than a separate WhatsApp setting. See Google’s Android dark-theme guidance.
Older Android guidance
Meta’s March 2020 rollout described system dark mode for Android 10 and newer, while Android 9 and earlier used WhatsApp’s own Settings → Chats → Theme → Dark control. Those are historical rollout references, not a statement of WhatsApp’s current minimum supported Android version. Current availability depends on the installed WhatsApp build and operating system. Meta’s original explanation is available in its dark-mode announcement.

The dependable documented method on iPhone is to change iOS’s system appearance; WhatsApp follows that setting.

- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Under Appearance, select Dark.
- Close and reopen WhatsApp if the interface does not change immediately.
To switch automatically, select Automatic in the same screen and configure the schedule under Options. You can also change appearance quickly from the Control Center by pressing and holding the brightness control, then tapping Dark Mode (the wording can vary by iOS release).
Meta’s original rollout identified iOS 13 as the system-based dark-mode platform. That 2020 compatibility statement should not be read as WhatsApp’s current iOS minimum. Unlike the documented Android route, do not assume every iPhone build has an independent in-app theme selector.
Enable dark mode in WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp Web and sign in by linking your phone.
- In the chat-list pane, click the three-dot menu or Menu button.
- Choose Settings.
- Choose Theme.
- Select Dark, then click OK if prompted.
This setting belongs to WhatsApp Web, so changing your browser or computer theme alone may not change WhatsApp. Contemporary documentation of this route appears in The Indian Express. Its instructions date from the original rollout, and current labels may differ.

If your build offers System default or equivalent, select it when you want WhatsApp Web to follow the computer’s light/dark setting. If no synchronization option is shown, choose Dark manually.
Enable dark mode in WhatsApp Desktop
- Open the native WhatsApp Desktop application.
- Open the application menu, profile control, or other menu button.
- Go to Settings, then Theme.
- Select Dark, or System default if that option is available.
Windows and macOS releases do not always use identical labels or menu placement. WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web are related but separate clients, so a setting or refresh behavior can differ. Update the desktop application if Theme is missing.

Choosing Dark versus System default

Turn dark mode off
- Android: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Theme → Light.
- iPhone: iPhone Settings → Display & Brightness → Light.
- Web/Desktop: WhatsApp Settings → Theme → Light.
If you selected a system-synchronized option, changing the operating system’s appearance may switch WhatsApp as well.

The wrong platform instructions were used
Android commonly has an in-app Chats → Theme control. iPhone normally follows Display & Brightness. Web and Desktop have their own Settings → Theme menu. Use the path for the client you are actually using.

On Android or a computer, a synchronized WhatsApp theme remains light until the operating system is also set to dark. Check the device’s display or appearance settings.
A schedule or Battery Saver changed the appearance
With Automatic enabled, iPhone and some Android devices switch according to a schedule. On some Android phones, Battery Saver affects the color scheme. Turn off Battery Saver temporarily and check the scheduled appearance if the result is unexpected.
The app or session needs refreshing
- Confirm the selected theme again.
- Force-close and reopen WhatsApp.
- Update WhatsApp from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Restart the phone or computer.
- For Web/Desktop, reopen the session; if necessary, sign out and link the device again.
The Theme option is missing
Update the official app, restart it, and recheck the correct menu. Very old operating systems, staged interface changes, restricted installations, and unofficial or modified clients can expose different controls. Avoid unofficial APKs, modified WhatsApp clients, CSS hacks, and forced-dark browser extensions; they can create security, privacy, account, and display problems.

Only one chat or panel looks bright
Check that conversation’s wallpaper and any custom appearance settings. A bright wallpaper does not mean the overall WhatsApp theme failed.

On some OLED or AMOLED screens, dark pixels can use less power, particularly at higher brightness. The result depends on the display technology, brightness, device, wallpaper, and how the app is used; there is no guaranteed battery percentage for every phone or computer.
Dark mode may feel more comfortable in a dim room because it reduces the glare of a bright interface. It does not protect eyesight or eliminate eye strain. Adjust screen brightness and surrounding lighting, and use whichever contrast is easiest for you to read. Meta describes readability and reduced discomfort in low light as design goals in its official announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can WhatsApp Web be dark while my computer is in light mode?
Yes. Open WhatsApp Web’s own Settings → Theme menu and choose Dark. Use System default only when you want it to follow the computer.
Can I schedule WhatsApp dark mode?
On iPhone, choose Automatic under Settings → Display & Brightness and use the iOS schedule. On Android, scheduling depends on the phone’s system dark-theme controls and whether WhatsApp is set to System default or Automatic.
