Samsung Knox Matrix is a cross-device security feature set, not a standalone smart-home shield you buy or install. It is designed to connect the security status of eligible Samsung phones, tablets, TVs, monitors and appliances through Samsung Account. Samsung says participating devices can monitor one another, flag serious risks and, in some cases, isolate a device.

Its usefulness depends on having supported Samsung hardware and software. A product that works with SmartThings is not automatically a Knox Matrix participant, and Matrix is not a replacement for a secure router, timely updates or strong account security.

What Knox Matrix is—and how it fits Samsung’s security tools

Samsung presents Knox Matrix as the cross-device layer in its broader Knox security portfolio. It is not a separate hub, consumer app, subscription or security appliance. The feature works through eligible Samsung devices associated with a Samsung Account. Samsung’s current overview describes support across Galaxy phones and tablets, TVs, monitors and smart appliances, with availability varying by model and software. Samsung Knox security overview.

Samsung service or layer What it does
Knox Platform The broader foundation of Samsung hardware and software security.
Knox Vault On selected devices, a hardware-backed environment for protecting sensitive information such as credentials, PINs and cryptographic keys.
Knox Matrix A cross-device security layer for status monitoring, trust relationships and selected credential and recovery features among compatible devices.
SmartThings A platform for registering, controlling and automating compatible connected devices, including some products from other brands.

Knox Vault and Knox Matrix are not interchangeable. Vault protects secrets locally on supported hardware; Matrix coordinates selected security functions across supported devices. SmartThings can be the place where compatible home products are managed, but SmartThings compatibility alone does not establish Matrix eligibility.

How Samsung says the Trust Chain works

Samsung describes Knox Matrix’s Trust Chain as a “private blockchain.” That is Samsung’s architectural terminology: a homeowner is not buying or operating a cryptocurrency blockchain. In practical terms, Samsung says compatible devices associated with the same account can share security-state information, check participating devices and surface status or recommended actions. A device judged to pose a serious risk may be isolated from the ecosystem. Samsung outlined this concept in its Knox Matrix architecture announcement.

  1. Eligible Samsung devices are associated with the Samsung Account used for the ecosystem.
  2. Participating devices share security-state information through the Trust Chain concept.
  3. The system can report the status of participating devices and identify a device Samsung considers seriously risky.
  4. Samsung says a risky device may be isolated and the user may receive recommended steps to address the issue.

Samsung’s consumer descriptions explain intended features, not a complete threat model or independent measurement of detection rates, false positives or time to isolation. They do not establish that Matrix detects every compromise or prevents every attack.

What risks it is designed to reduce—and what it cannot replace

The basic problem is that a connected device can become a stepping stone: a compromised device may create risk for other devices that trust or interact with it. Knox Matrix is intended to improve visibility across participating Samsung products and reduce that cross-device risk through monitoring and possible isolation. Samsung also describes credential sharing between trusted devices and recovery of supported encrypted data and passkeys.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Those are ecosystem-level safeguards, not a guarantee that the whole home is secure. Matrix does not replace router security, firmware updates, strong and unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available, or careful device selection. It also does not establish protection for unsupported products, every SmartThings-connected device, or devices affected by a compromised router or Samsung Account.

Which devices are eligible?

Samsung’s current US security page says Galaxy phones and tablets need One UI 7 or later. For TVs, monitors and home appliances, it refers to qualifying software released after 2025 and cautions that model support varies. It also says Knox Matrix features require a Samsung Account and are unavailable in the People’s Republic of China. Check the current Samsung US security page and your exact model’s support information before relying on eligibility.

Samsung support material for another market gives examples such as Galaxy S21-series and later phones, Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 3 and later, TVs and Smart Monitors receiving Tizen 9.0 updates, and selected appliances. Those examples reflect a particular support snapshot, not a universal compatibility list for every country or the current date. Samsung’s separate appliance announcement says eligible Wi-Fi-enabled appliances launched from 2024 may receive up to seven years of software updates; that update commitment does not mean every such appliance supports every Knox Matrix feature. A Samsung support page for Latin America says Knox Matrix can support up to 32 compatible devices. Treat that figure as market- and page-specific unless Samsung confirms it for your region. Samsung’s device-status guide.

How to view device security status

Samsung’s Latin American support guide gives these paths. Menu names can differ with country, language, model and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Galaxy phone or tablet

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security and privacy.
  3. Tap Device security status.
  4. Review the status shown for the current device and other compatible devices associated with the Samsung Account.

In SmartThings

  1. Open the SmartThings app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Select Device security status.
  4. Review participating devices and their displayed security state.

If a device you expected to see is missing, verify its model and software, account association, regional eligibility and whether it is a Matrix-supported device rather than merely registered in SmartThings. Update it if Samsung provides an update, then reopen the status view. If it remains absent, consult Samsung support for that model. The menu paths are from Samsung’s regional support guide.

What happens when a device is flagged?

Samsung says a device identified as presenting a serious risk may be isolated and that the system can recommend corrective action. The public consumer description does not specify every isolation action for every device type. Depending on the device and issue, trust relationships or ecosystem access could be limited; routines that depend on it may then stop working until the problem is resolved. Do not assume Matrix automatically cleans or repairs a compromised device. Follow the action shown by Samsung and use the device’s model-specific support instructions.

How Knox Matrix Recovery works

Samsung describes Knox Matrix Recovery as a way to restore supported encrypted backups, synced data and passkeys on a replacement device. Recovery preparation matters: Samsung says a device screen lock must be registered beforehand, and replacement-device setup can use a previously registered screen lock to recover protected information. A Samsung Account is required. This is not a promise to restore every local file, app state or item of data. The exact coverage depends on the device and service, and forgetting the required authentication information can make recovery difficult or impossible. Details are in Samsung’s security overview.

Encryption claims apply to specific features

Samsung says Enhanced Data Protection uses end-to-end encryption for supported data services and describes post-quantum cryptography as part of that feature. This is a distinct claim from Knox Matrix’s cross-device monitoring and from Knox Vault’s hardware-backed protection. It should not be read as a statement that every SmartThings command, sensor reading, camera stream or appliance data flow is end-to-end encrypted. Samsung’s public description is feature- and service-specific; consult the details for the particular service you use in its security documentation.

SmartThings compatibility is not Knox Matrix protection

SmartThings supports control of some compatible third-party products, but control and security participation are different things. Samsung says supported appliances and TVs that meet the HCA standard can be connected and controlled through SmartThings regardless of brand; that interoperability statement does not show that those products become Knox Matrix nodes. A third-party camera, lock, light or thermostat may work in a SmartThings setup without receiving Matrix’s documented status monitoring or isolation functions. Check Samsung’s SmartThings compatibility information for product-specific support.

Benefits and trade-offs by type of home

Samsung-heavy home

If a household already owns several recent, supported Samsung devices, Matrix may add a convenient security-status view and ecosystem-level trust features. Its usefulness still depends on keeping supported software current and maintaining Samsung Account access.

Mixed-brand home

SmartThings may help bring compatible brands into one control system, but Matrix coverage is narrower. Do not treat a single dashboard as evidence that every device receives equivalent security checks.

Privacy-first or local-control home

Matrix is a poor fit if the priority is minimizing account and cloud dependence or avoiding one manufacturer’s ecosystem. The described feature requires Samsung Account login, and Samsung’s consumer materials do not establish that all Matrix functions operate locally or remain available during service or network outages.

Is Knox Matrix free?

Samsung’s public consumer pages describe Knox Matrix as a feature of supported Samsung devices and do not list a separate consumer purchase price or standalone subscription. That does not make the required compatible hardware free; its price depends on model, market and retailer. Paid Samsung Knox enterprise products are separate business offerings and are not the price of consumer Knox Matrix. See Samsung Knox’s enterprise overview.

What to check before buying a device for Matrix

  • Verify Knox Matrix support for the exact model and market, rather than buying based on the Knox name or a general launch year.
  • Check the expected software-update support and whether it suits the device’s intended lifespan.
  • Consider whether the household will benefit from Samsung Account and SmartThings integration enough to accept the ecosystem dependence.
  • Do not buy an appliance solely for the Matrix label if you need broad third-party protection, local-only operation or a universal smart-home firewall.

A vendor-neutral setup based on compatible Matter, Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave products, or a local-first controller, may offer different choices and control arrangements; those approaches are not direct security equivalents, and none is categorically more secure without comparative evidence. Regardless of platform, an automatically updated router, strong administrator authentication and separation of less-trusted IoT devices from sensitive devices are useful parts of a home-security strategy.
