Apple Music’s branded live radio stations began appearing on TuneIn on August 27, 2025, taking the broadcasts beyond Apple’s own services for the first time, according to contemporary reporting. The change gives TuneIn listeners a way to hear the live stations without an Apple Music subscription; it does not unlock Apple Music’s on-demand catalog.

What changed—and what “first time” means

Apple made its branded live radio stations available through TuneIn, an internet-radio platform. The reported start date was August 27, 2025. The significant first is distribution outside Apple Music—not Apple offering radio for the first time. Apple’s stations had been part of Apple Music since its 2015 launch, and Apple previously operated iTunes Radio.

Apple Music Radio is scheduled, editorially programmed broadcasting, including live-hosted shows. It is distinct from the subscription service’s on-demand catalog, where listeners choose songs and albums. Apple describes its radio offering as 24/7 programming; that does not mean every show is live at every moment. Apple’s description of its radio service covers the broader programming model.

Apple added Música Uno, Club and Chill in December 2024 alongside Apple Music 1, Hits and Country. Its announcement said the live stations could be heard free within Apple Music, without an Apple Music subscription. Apple’s station announcement identifies the six-station lineup.

The TuneIn arrangement concerns these branded live broadcasts. It does not make every Apple Music playlist, personalized artist station or on-demand song available through TuneIn.

How to listen on TuneIn

  1. Open the TuneIn app or service.
  2. Search for “Apple Music Radio” or the name of a station, such as “Apple Music 1.”
  3. Select the station listing and start its live stream.

The exact listing and its availability can differ by device and market. If a station does not appear or play, check whether it is available in your region and on your TuneIn platform; music rights and distribution can vary. TuneIn’s station listings may also use different display names.

Is it free, and does this create a free Apple Music tier?

Contemporary coverage reported that the stations were free and ad-free on TuneIn, with no TuneIn Premium subscription required. That claim applies to access to the broadcasts, not every feature or piece of content in TuneIn; availability and presentation may vary by market or platform. The report on the TuneIn distribution describes the arrangement.

This is not a free tier of the full Apple Music service. Apple Music remains a subscription service for its on-demand catalog, personal library and subscriber features. Apple’s product page describes a catalog of more than 100 million songs and features including downloads, lossless audio and Spatial Audio: Apple Music.

For context, Apple’s U.S. page displayed these plans when checked on August 18, 2026: Individual at $11.99 per month after a limited-time three-month introductory offer of $1.99; Family at $19.99 per month after a limited-time three-month offer of $4.99; and Student at $6.99 per month, subject to eligibility. These are U.S. offers, not permanent or worldwide prices; Apple may change them by market, eligibility or promotion. Check the current page for your region before subscribing.

What TuneIn gives you—and what it does not

Think of TuneIn as another outlet for the live broadcasts, not as a substitute Apple Music app. A live station plays a programmed stream, so it offers less control than choosing a particular song from a catalog.

Feature TuneIn access to Apple Music Radio Apple Music subscription
Branded live radio stations Reported available where the streams are offered Available
Full on-demand music catalog Not included Included
Apple Music library, playlists and downloads Not equivalent to Apple Music access Available
Personalized recommendations and Replay Not established as part of the TuneIn arrangement Apple Music features
Lossless or Spatial Audio for the broadcast Do not assume; not established for the TuneIn stream Apple lists these formats for its service

Apple Music’s subscriber features and its live radio broadcasts are different products in practical use. Do not assume that a TuneIn stream carries over Apple Music controls such as saving a song to your library, seeing synced listening history, or using the full Apple Music interface. Nor does Apple’s lossless or Spatial Audio support for its service establish that those formats are delivered by TuneIn.

Why distribute the stations through TuneIn?

The partnership puts Apple’s radio programming in front of listeners who may not use Apple Music or Apple devices. TuneIn also reaches radio-focused environments such as connected cars and smart speakers, where listeners may already use it for stations, news or sports. That broader reach can introduce Apple’s programming to potential subscribers, though Apple has not described the arrangement as a guaranteed subscription-conversion funnel.

Contemporary reporting put TuneIn’s audience at approximately 75 million monthly active users. Treat that as a reported platform figure, not an independently audited audience measurement. Apple later said services partnerships including TuneIn helped extend its services beyond its ecosystem in 2025, and characterized Apple Music as reaching all-time highs in listenership and new subscribers that year. Those growth claims are Apple’s own account. Apple’s 2025 services statement discusses the partnerships and growth.

How this differs from Apple’s earlier radio launches

  • June 10, 2013: Apple announced iTunes Radio, a free, ad-supported internet-radio service with more than 200 stations. Apple’s announcement documents that earlier service.
  • June 8, 2015: Apple announced Apple Music and Beats 1. Apple described Beats 1 as its first live radio station dedicated entirely to music and music culture; that was not Apple’s first radio service of any kind. Apple’s 2015 announcement explains the launch.
  • June 30, 2015: Apple Music launched, making Beats 1 part of Apple’s new music service.
  • December 10, 2024: Apple expanded the branded lineup with Música Uno, Club and Chill.
  • August 27, 2025: Apple Music Radio distribution through TuneIn began, according to contemporary reporting.

The 2015 launch established Apple’s radio identity within its music service. The TuneIn development changed where listeners could find those broadcasts.

Which option suits your listening?

  • You only want Apple’s live stations: Try TuneIn first, where the streams are available; an Apple Music subscription is not required for the reported radio access.
  • You want to choose tracks, build a library or listen offline: Apple Music is the relevant service, because TuneIn access to the broadcasts does not include the on-demand catalog.
  • You want a mix of radio, news, sports and other streams: TuneIn may be useful as a broader radio platform. Its other content and features can have separate availability or requirements.
  • You rely on a specific audio format or Apple Music control: Use Apple Music for the features Apple lists for its service; do not assume the TuneIn relay preserves them.

Terrestrial AM/FM radio is transmitted over broadcast infrastructure and is often local or regional. Internet radio delivers scheduled streams online; on-demand streaming lets a listener select a specific recording. Apple Music Radio combines scheduled editorial programming and hosted shows, while algorithmic stations are generated around a listener’s choices or history. TuneIn makes the former easier to find outside Apple’s service, but it does not turn a live broadcast into on-demand playback.
