Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 20 on April 4, 2025, at NAB in Las Vegas, describing a public beta with more than 100 new features. The release’s biggest practical changes are AI-assisted script, subtitle, multicamera and audio workflows, a dedicated keyframe editor, a redesigned Magic Mask, Chroma Warp, Fusion compositing updates and new delivery tools. Some headline capabilities require Studio, and as of August 18, 2026, Blackmagic lists DaVinci Resolve 21 as its current major release.
What Blackmagic announced
The April 4, 2025 announcement introduced Resolve 20 during NAB 2025 and made a public beta available immediately. Blackmagic’s “more than 100 new features” claim is repeated in the official Resolve 20 New Features Guide.
That number covers a mixture of major tools, revisions to existing features, interface and quality-of-life changes, codec support, scripting additions and smaller workflow improvements. It should not be read as 100 equally large headline features. The release’s unifying idea is assistance across the whole post-production process, particularly through AI tools, rather than an entirely new editing application.
Current-status note: Resolve 20 was the major release announced in 2025. As of August 18, 2026, Blackmagic’s current product page lists DaVinci Resolve 21 and DaVinci Resolve Studio 21. Resolve 20 remains relevant for its feature history and for facilities that keep a project on a known version, but new installations should check Resolve 21 first.

The AI features that matter
AI IntelliScript
AI IntelliScript uses a written script to help create an initial timeline. It is best understood as an assembly aid: it can place matching recorded dialogue into a rough sequence so an editor can start from the script instead of manually finding every line.
It does not replace editorial judgment. If the recorded wording differs from the script, a line is missing, several takes exist, or the director wants a reaction shot instead of the literal scripted line, the resulting assembly needs review and restructuring. The exact edition requirement should be checked in the installed Resolve 20 documentation, because Blackmagic does not present every AI capability as universally available in the free edition.
AI Animated Subtitles
Animated Subtitles can emphasize words as they are spoken, making dialogue graphics for short-form videos, social clips and stylized presentations much faster to build. They are visual subtitle treatments, not automatically compliant accessibility captions. Keep a conventional, accurately timed caption track when accessibility, translation or archival requirements matter.
Transcription quality, speaker identification and language availability vary with the recording and language. Names, technical terms, overlapping speech and poor microphone audio should be checked manually before delivery.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →AI Multicam SmartSwitch
AI Multicam SmartSwitch assembles a multicamera first pass using detected speakers. That can remove much of the repetitive work in interviews, podcasts and panel recordings, but it is not a final director. Overlapping speakers, interruptions, silent reactions, a person appearing on multiple angles or a technically better shot that does not contain the detected speaker can all require editorial changes.
- Confirm that each camera is correctly synced and that speakers are identified consistently.
- Review every cut for framing, eyelines, continuity and reaction shots.
- Treat the result as an editable assembly, not an automatically finished program.
AI Audio Assistant
AI Audio Assistant analyzes a project and helps establish a professional starting mix. It can reduce repetitive Fairlight setup by balancing dialogue, music and effects, which is particularly useful to editors who are not dedicated re-recording mixers.

Automatic mixing still requires listening on reliable speakers or headphones. Check clipping, noise, pumping, phase and mono compatibility, preserve appropriate room tone, confirm dialogue intelligibility and verify the loudness specification for the broadcaster or platform. A generated mix is a starting point, not a substitute for a final audio review.
AI Voice Convert
AI Voice Convert is explicitly labeled Studio Version Only in the official guide. It uses a voice model and another performance to convert one speaking voice into another while retaining elements such as timing, pitch variation and expression. Practical uses include replacing a damaged narration take, creating a clean version from a better performance and revising voice-over without repeating every line in the target voice.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBlackmagic’s guide recommends roughly 10 minutes of clean, high-quality recordings for a custom model. Its “Better” analysis mode can take substantially longer than “Faster”, with the time dependent on the computer; those figures are workflow guidance, not guaranteed benchmarks. The driving performance can influence accent and delivery, so conversion should not be assumed to recreate another accent perfectly.
Use the tool only with clear permission from the performer and rights holders. Voice cloning can raise privacy, copyright, contract and union obligations. Unauthorized impersonation, deceptive disclosure or a model trained from recordings without consent is not a responsible production practice.
Editing and timeline improvements
Dedicated Keyframe Editor
The new Keyframe Editor gives animation parameters a dedicated, timeline-style workspace instead of forcing editors to manage everything through a crowded Inspector. It can group controls such as Transform, Cropping and Speed; show only parameters that already contain keyframes; filter video or audio parameters; and be resized or undocked.
The guide documents controls including Expand All Parameters, Collapse All Parameters, Display Parameters with Keyframes, Display All Video Parameters and Display Selected Parameters. Selected keyframes can be moved, copied, pasted, deleted or locked. The benefit is organizational: complex edits are easier to inspect and adjust without hunting through unrelated controls.

Voice-over recording palettes
Resolve 20 adds a more direct voice-over workflow for recording into the timeline. The palette provides input monitoring, meters, cue and record controls, and optional Voice Isolation, Dialog Leveler and Stereo Fixer processing. Monitoring can be set to the microphone alone or to the microphone together with timeline audio.
Decide whether processing is being recorded, rendered in place or applied as a reversible effect before committing to a take. Keeping an unprocessed safety recording is prudent when the delivery may require a different treatment later.
Transcription and text-based work
Resolve’s transcription workflow can be searched by spoken content and used to navigate dialogue for rough edits. The 20.2 guide says exported transcriptions can include speaker names and timecode for each speech block, which helps reviews and post-production handoffs.
Always verify names, punctuation, technical terms, speaker labels and timecode. A transcript is an editing aid, not proof that every word or speaker has been recognized correctly.
Recommended Free Tools
Cut and Edit page changes
- The Cut page can ripple-edit secondary tracks even when no underlying video exists on the primary track.
- Source and destination track patching, trim behavior, track organization and multicam/replay workflows receive smaller improvements.
- Still images and frame sequences can be automatically resynchronized in supported workflows.
- Speed Editor users gain press-and-hold workflows using the search dial and SMART INSRT, APPND and RIPL O/WR keys to paint source material into the timeline while adjusting surrounding edits.
Fusion, color and visual effects
Multilayer compositing in Fusion
Fusion receives multilayer compositing and node-organization improvements aimed at motion graphics, titles, screen replacements and visual effects. Layer-oriented controls can make familiar compositing tasks easier to organize while retaining Fusion’s node-based workflow. Editors who need occasional compositing can stay inside Resolve; dedicated artists managing large 3D or highly specialized composites may still need other applications.
Chroma Warp
Chroma Warp provides more direct control over relationships between colors than a basic Hue-versus-Hue or Hue-versus-Saturation adjustment. It can help refine skin tones, separate similar colors, control transitions between hues or create a deliberate palette transformation while preserving a more coherent color relationship.

- Built for video editors and colorists: Resolve's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you edit.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Magic Mask v2
Magic Mask’s redesign removes the need to choose separate Person and Object modes first. Clicks identify a subject or a feature such as a face, hair, arm or shoe; a Paint tool adds or removes regions; multiple clicks can be tracked through a shot; and matte-finesse controls help clean the result.
- Add positive clicks to identify the subject or feature.
- Add subtractive clicks where the selection includes unwanted areas.
- Track the selection forward or backward.
- Inspect the matte frame by frame, especially at cuts and occlusions.
- Use Matte Finesse, qualifiers, windows or manual paint corrections on difficult edges.
Motion blur, hair, smoke, glass, reflections, similar-colored backgrounds, fast camera moves, low-resolution footage and subjects crossing one another can all cause drift or holes. Magic Mask accelerates isolation; it does not make rotoscoping infallible.
Depth Map improvements
Improved Depth Map tools can isolate foreground and background for selective grading, simulated depth-of-field changes, atmospheric effects and depth-driven looks. A generated depth map is an estimate, not a true 3D scene or guaranteed camera-depth measurement, so edges and unusual perspectives still need inspection.
Resolve FX
Resolve Studio’s broad FX library includes more than 100 GPU- and CPU-accelerated effects, but that product-page figure describes the Studio collection, not 100 newly introduced effects in Resolve 20. Resolve 20 adds or highlights tools such as Background Defocus and Film Look Creator, alongside improvements to film grain, face refinement, skin refinement, directional blur and subpixel animation.
Fairlight, media management and delivery
Fairlight workflows
In addition to AI Audio Assistant and the voice-over palette, Fairlight gains dialogue-focused workflow improvements intended to make organization and mixing less intimidating for editors. Automated processing should be checked for artifacts and over-processing, and final output still needs the required loudness and technical review.
Ingest, review and publishing
Blackmagic highlights separate workflow stages:
- Backup and ingest: the Clone palette helps verify camera-card copies.
- Review: remote client monitoring can use DeckLink hardware.
- Publishing: Quick Export offers direct paths for YouTube, Vimeo and TikTok.
- Professional finishing: the Deliver page and multi-job render queues provide more detailed control.
Resolve 20.2 adds further format and scripting work, including Samsung APV encoding, Sony ARW decoding and importing single-frame WebP and GIF files as stills.

What arrived in Resolve 20.1 and 20.2
Resolve 20 is a version family, not only the April 2025 beta. The 20.1 guide documents additional changes across General, Cut/Edit, Fusion, Color, Resolve FX and Fairlight.
The 20.2 guide adds or documents:
- Vision Pro and immersive workflows, including streaming from Fusion to visionOS.
- Stereoscopic 3D rendering options.
- Current date and time metadata variables.
- Scripting APIs for adding subtitles to render jobs and setting timeline or Media Pool clip names.
- Improved ripple-trim synchronization, a Source Track Selector, and further trimming and keyframing changes.
- Cinematic Haze and improved color-panel persistence.
- ITU BT.2408 handling for HLG and PQ conversion.
- Surface Tracker performance of up to 2× faster, according to Blackmagic; actual gains depend on the system and project.
- Additional Fairlight project settings.
These follow-up additions should not be confused with features present in the initial public beta.
Free Resolve versus Studio
Blackmagic describes the free edition as a substantial editor, color grader, Fusion compositor and Fairlight workstation. Its product page says the free version supports virtually all 8-bit formats up to 60 fps and Ultra HD 3840×2160, with collaboration and HDR grading included. Studio adds the AI Neural Engine, more Resolve FX, advanced noise reduction, Magic Mask, film grain, optical blur, text-based editing, 10-bit video up to 120 fps and resolutions beyond 4K.

Should you install Resolve 20?
Use Resolve 20 when a facility, client, plug-in, hardware panel or collaboration pipeline is deliberately locked to that version, or when you need to reproduce an existing project reliably. New users should inspect Resolve 21 first because it is the current major release as of August 18, 2026. Whichever version you choose, check GPU memory for AI, noise reduction, Magic Mask and voice modeling; verify plug-in and project compatibility; and test a copy of an important project before switching versions.
The free edition is the sensible starting point for many editors. Studio is most compelling when you specifically need AI Neural Engine tools, Magic Mask, advanced noise reduction, higher-end formats, additional Resolve FX or Studio-only features such as Voice Convert. Blackmagic’s United States product page showed a $295 Studio price signal on August 18, 2026; regional taxes, duties, licensing terms and availability can differ.
A Speed Editor is optional. Blackmagic’s product page showed a $435 price signal on that date, but its value depends on frequent Cut-page, multicam or rapid-assembly work. Keyboard users and occasional editors do not need the hardware to use Resolve 20 or 21.
Bottom line
Resolve 20 was a major AI- and workflow-focused release: its lasting strengths are faster first-pass work, better keyframe and voice-over handling, more capable masking and color control, and a broader path from ingest to delivery. The “more than 100” figure is credible as a total across major tools and many smaller changes, but the practical value depends on your edition, footage, hardware and willingness to review automated results. In 2026, treat Resolve 20 as an important release or compatibility target—not as Blackmagic’s current major version.
