Shopify is the best default for most serious online stores. Choose Wix when visual editing and services matter as much as products; BigCommerce for complex catalogs, B2B, or more built-in commerce; WooCommerce for WordPress and maximum control; Squarespace for stylish small boutiques; and Square Online when in-person retail is central. The right choice depends on your products, order volume, payment costs, technical capacity, and sales channels—not the lowest advertised subscription.

What counts as an ecommerce website builder?

A page builder can publish a catalog, but a commerce platform must also handle products and variants, cart and checkout, payments, taxes, shipping, orders, refunds, customer accounts, inventory, discounts, fraud controls, marketing connections and analytics.

Hosted platforms

Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and Square Online include hosting, SSL and managed infrastructure. You trade some server-level control for simpler setup and a vendor responsible for core availability.

Self-hosted platforms

WooCommerce is an open-source WordPress plugin rather than a complete hosted builder. Adobe Commerce/Open Source follows the same ownership model at a larger scale. You arrange hosting, domains, backups, security, updates, payment services, extensions and technical support.

Store add-ons

Ecwid, buy buttons and checkout links add selling to an existing site. Ecwid is useful when replacing the website is unnecessary, but it is not usually a full commerce operating system for complex catalogs.

How to choose the right platform

1. Start with the business model

  • Physical products: assess variants, stock locations, shipping and returns.
  • Digital downloads or subscriptions: verify delivery, recurring billing, tax treatment and failed-payment recovery; these often require apps or extensions.
  • Services and appointments: prioritize bookings and content alongside checkout.
  • Wholesale/B2B: look for company accounts, price lists, purchase orders, minimums and tax-exempt buyers.
  • International sales: confirm currencies, local payment methods, duties, languages, domains and regional tax tools.
  • Retail, food or pop-ups: prioritize connected point-of-sale, pickup and delivery workflows.

2. Measure operational complexity

Count products and variants, inventory locations, staff accounts, sales channels, fulfillment partners and shipping rules. Ask whether you need Amazon or eBay, social selling, marketplace feeds, purchase orders, custom product options or multiple storefronts. A builder that handles 20 products may be a poor fit for 20,000 SKUs or shared warehouse stock.

3. Calculate the real cost

Real monthly cost = platform subscription + payment processing + platform transaction fees + required apps or extensions + hosting and tools + support or maintenance. Include domain registration, themes, email, shipping and tax software, POS hardware, development, migration and currency-conversion charges. Never compare WooCommerce’s free core plugin directly with a fully hosted subscription.

4. Check your exit plan

Confirm product, customer and order-history exports; URL redirects; domain ownership; theme portability; subscription records; payment-token portability; and whether apps store data in proprietary formats. Migration can affect SEO, customer accounts, analytics history, subscriptions and fulfillment workflows.

Best overall: Shopify

Shopify is the safest recommendation when selling online is the primary objective. It combines hosted infrastructure, checkout, products, inventory, orders, analytics, payments, omnichannel selling and a large partner ecosystem. Its pricing page also lists social and marketplace selling, in-person selling and AI-channel features: shopify.com/pricing.

Why choose it

  • Fast managed setup with SSL and infrastructure included.
  • Strong standardized checkout and broad app, agency and integration ecosystem.
  • Good path from a first store to multichannel and international operations.
  • Useful product, order, inventory and marketing tooling without server administration.

Costs and limits

U.S. displayed annual-billing prices are Basic $29/month, Grow $79 and Advanced $299; monthly prices shown are $39, $105 and $399. Shopify Payments online card rates on Basic begin at 2.9% + $0.30, while listed third-party transaction fees are 2%, 1% and 0.6% by plan. Card rates vary by country, card type, plan and eligibility, and third-party fees are separate from processor charges. Apps can materially raise the bill, and deep checkout or data-model changes remain less flexible than on a self-hosted system.

Skip it when

You need only occasional payment links, refuse recurring SaaS costs, require complete server control, or are primarily building an editorial or membership site rather than a store.

Best for design-led small stores: Wix

Wix suits creators, consultants and small businesses combining products with services, bookings and content. Its visual editor is approachable and flexible. TechRadar identifies Wix as suitable for many ecommerce needs while noting that advanced inventory and analytics may favor Shopify or BigCommerce: techradar.com/news/the-best-website-builder.

Trade-offs

Complex catalogs, many locations, advanced reporting and B2B workflows may require workarounds. Plan names, prices and features vary by region, so check the live U.S. offer before buying. Wix is a weaker choice when ecommerce operations—not the broader website—are the core business.

Best for built-in commerce depth: BigCommerce

BigCommerce is compelling for larger catalogs, wholesale, international and multichannel merchants that prefer native features over a large collection of apps. Its B2B capabilities include announced features such as cascading price lists: BigCommerce investor announcement.

Current pricing mechanics

The U.S. annual display lists Core at $29/month with a $30,000 trailing-12-month GMV threshold, Growth at $79 with a $100,000 threshold, Scale at $299 with a $33,333 monthly GMV threshold and stated overage rules, and Performance from $1,499/month. The page lists open-payment-provider fees of 2%, 1% and 0.6% for Core, Growth and Scale. Orders through qualifying embedded providers do not incur that platform fee under the stated terms; eligible U.S. card processing begins at 2.89% + $0.29. Trade-offs

Administration is more involved, and GMV thresholds and payment architecture require financial modeling. It may be excessive for a tiny catalog or a beginner seeking the fastest setup.

Best for WordPress and control: WooCommerce

WooCommerce provides a free, open-source core plugin inside WordPress. It is strongest for content-led businesses, technical owners and unusual catalog or workflow requirements. Official guidance explains that hosting, extensions, themes, payments, security, backups and development remain separate costs: woocommerce.com/pricing.

What ownership requires

  • Managed hosting, SSL, backups and uptime monitoring.
  • Security updates, staging and compatibility testing.
  • Payment, tax, shipping and subscription extensions.
  • Recovery plans for plugin conflicts, failed webhooks and checkout outages.

Its flexibility and WordPress SEO control are valuable, but every customization adds maintenance obligations. Choose it because you have technical ownership—not simply because the plugin itself is free.

Best for stylish boutiques: Squarespace

Squarespace works well for artists, publishers and small product catalogs where templates, editorial content and presentation matter as much as operations. Its ecommerce pricing page currently shows a 2% online-store transaction fee on the entry commerce-enabled tier and 0% on higher commerce tiers: squarespace.com/pricing?industry=ecommerce.

It is a poor fit for advanced wholesale, complex inventory, extensive fulfillment automation, unusual checkout behavior or a very large app ecosystem. Plan names, prices and availability vary by country.

Best for physical retail: Square Online

Square Online is particularly practical for restaurants, local retailers, market stalls and pop-ups already using Square payments or POS. It connects online orders, in-person transactions, products and inventory. Compare its regional plans and processing terms at squareup.com/us/en/online-store and squareup.com/us/en/pricing. A digital-first brand needing extensive ecommerce integrations and growth tooling may be better served by Shopify or BigCommerce.

Hosted versus self-hosted

Question Hosted (Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Square) Self-hosted (WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce Open Source)
Setup Faster; infrastructure is managed More choices, but hosting and configuration are yours
Maintenance Vendor handles core platform updates You handle updates, security, backups and performance
Customization Theme, app and API boundaries apply Deep code and database control
Cost predictability Subscription plus usage and app fees Variable hosting, extensions and development costs
Portability Exports and migration tools vary More underlying ownership, but migrations still require work

Features that decide the shortlist

Payments and checkout

Separate the processor’s card fee from the platform’s transaction fee. Verify supported processors, wallets, buy-now-pay-later, local methods, payout timing, reserves, chargeback handling and subscription billing. A standardized hosted checkout can reduce operational work; WooCommerce permits deeper changes but makes performance and compatibility your responsibility.

Catalog, inventory and fulfillment

Check bundles, dependent options, custom uploads, bulk editing, imports, SKUs and barcodes, location-level stock, transfers, backorders, purchase orders, partial fulfillment, returns, dropshipping and print-on-demand. Thousands of dependent variants or shared component inventory may justify BigCommerce, WooCommerce or a custom implementation over a basic visual builder.

SEO and content

Assess editable titles and descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps, robots controls, structured data, redirects, faceted-navigation handling, image optimization, Core Web Vitals, international SEO and blog tools. No platform guarantees rankings; WooCommerce offers extensive control but also more opportunities for conflicting plugins and poor implementation.

Omnichannel, B2B and international selling

Confirm social and marketplace feeds, Google Merchant Center, POS, buy buttons, wholesale portals, company accounts, customer-specific prices, net terms, multiple currencies, local payments, duties, languages, regional domains and privacy requirements. Shopify and BigCommerce are generally more relevant than Squarespace or basic Wix for serious B2B; availability varies by country.

Support and ecosystem

Compare support hours, documentation, partner availability, app quality, APIs and migration help. More apps can also mean higher bills, slower pages and more vendors to troubleshoot.

Launch without expensive surprises

  1. Define products, variants, locations, fulfillment and required channels.
  2. List payment methods and tax jurisdictions; estimate sales and average order value.
  3. Calculate three-year cost, including apps, maintenance, processing and migration.
  4. Confirm exports, redirects, domain ownership and subscription portability.
  5. Register the domain independently where practical and choose a plan that supports actual checkout.
  6. Configure address, currency, taxes, shipping, returns, privacy, terms and notifications.
  7. Add a few real products, test inventory rules and connect payment payouts.
  8. Test successful and failed payments, express checkout, discounts, tax, shipping, out-of-stock behavior, refunds, cancellations, email, analytics and mobile accessibility.
  9. If migrating, import a small batch first, create redirects and verify order and customer data.
  10. Place a real or test order before importing the full catalog.

Preventable failure modes

  • Free or entry plans may exclude checkout, custom domains, staff, analytics, advanced shipping or multiple currencies.
  • Apps for reviews, subscriptions, bundles, search, returns, tax and loyalty can overwhelm subscription savings.
  • WooCommerce updates can expose plugin conflicts, expired SSL, weak passwords, slow hosting or broken payment webhooks; use staging, automated backups and monitoring.
  • BigCommerce plan changes can follow trailing-12-month GMV thresholds; understand what counts before forecasting costs.
  • AI copy, design or support features do not replace payment, tax, fulfillment or customer-service infrastructure.

Final recommendations

  • Choose Shopify for the safest general-purpose, managed growth path.
  • Choose Wix for a small, design-led site that also sells services or products.
  • Choose BigCommerce when native catalog, B2B, international or channel depth matters most.
  • Choose WooCommerce when WordPress ownership and customization justify ongoing technical responsibility.
  • Choose Squarespace when a polished brand presentation and modest catalog are the priority.
  • Choose Square Online when your business already runs on Square in person.
