MATLAB and Plotly are not direct substitutes. MATLAB is a proprietary numerical-computing and engineering environment; Plotly is primarily an open-source visualization system used with Python or JavaScript, with Dash for analytical web applications. Plotly can replace MATLAB’s plotting layer in some projects, but it does not replace MATLAB’s numerical algorithms, simulation tools, engineering toolboxes, or Simulink.

Plotly’s advantage is interactive communication, not an automatic guarantee of better publication graphics. MATLAB remains compelling when the figure is one step in a larger mathematical or engineering workflow.
Static figures, interactive results and browser sharing
Prefer MATLAB for technical publication workflows
- Your analysis and simulation already run in MATLAB.
- You need repeatable figures for papers, reports or engineering reviews.
- The audience consumes PDF, SVG, EPS or raster output.
- Numerical processing and figure generation must remain tightly coupled.
Prefer Plotly for exploratory or browser-first communication
- Readers need hover values, filtering, zooming or linked interaction.
- The result belongs in a notebook, website or dashboard.
- Collaborators should view it without installing MATLAB.
- You are building a Python or JavaScript application.
MATLAB R2026a web canvas versus Plotly
MATLAB’s documented web-canvas export is available since R2026a. For supported graphics, a figure or live script can be exported to HTML, retaining interactions such as pan, zoom and rotate. A recipient can open the file in a browser without a MATLAB license. A documented example is:
exportgraphics(fig, "figure.html")
Supported objects and exact behavior depend on the release documentation. This feature narrows the gap for sharing individual interactive figures, but it is not a Dash-style application framework: it does not by itself provide application callbacks, authentication, database integration, user state or enterprise portals.

Plotly remains the stronger fit when the deliverable is a web application with controls, callbacks or multiple users. Dash applications normally run locally until published; deployment choices are described at Dash’s deployment documentation.
Numerical computing and engineering scope
This is where MATLAB is substantially broader. MathWorks offers products for control systems, signal and image processing, statistics and machine learning, optimization, symbolic mathematics, communications, robotics, computer vision, deep learning, aerospace and automotive workflows, code generation, hardware connectivity and Simulink model-based design. The catalog is summarized on the MathWorks product and licensing page.
Plotly does not provide equivalent domain toolboxes, simulators or code-generation systems. It can visualize results produced by Python libraries or MATLAB, but visualization should not be confused with computation, simulation or engineering certification.
Rank #3

Dash versus MATLAB application workflows
Dash
Dash is Python-based and designed around browser layouts, components and callbacks. Dash Open Source is free under the MIT license. Plotly Cloud provides managed hosting with a free starting plan, while Dash Enterprise adds organization-controlled deployment and features such as authentication middleware, workspaces, job queues, app portals, reporting, alerting, saved views and PDF reports. Those enterprise capabilities should not be attributed to the free package; see Dash Enterprise.
MATLAB options
MATLAB users can consider App Designer, MATLAB web apps, MATLAB Online, MATLAB Compiler and, where appropriate, MATLAB Production Server or MATLAB Online Server. Online Server has separate infrastructure and licensing requirements; MathWorks documents them in its administrator guide. A MATLAB app is therefore not automatically a freely hosted browser application.
Language, maintenance and ecosystem
MATLAB offers one integrated language and environment, reducing the number of components a beginner must assemble. The trade-off is proprietary syntax, release dependence and license requirements for collaborators.
Rank #4
- Newest in the TI-84 series: Built for everyday classroom use
- Icon-based home screen: Popular math tools are front and center for faster, more intuitive navigation
- 3x faster performance: A powerful processor delivers quicker calculations and smoother graphing
- Bigger, clearer graphs: 50% more graphing space makes it easier to see patterns and relationships
- Simplified keypad design: Larger buttons and reduced clutter help you work faster with fewer steps
A realistic Plotly stack is Python, NumPy, pandas, SciPy, Jupyter, Plotly and possibly Dash, plus a server, cloud service or deployment platform. This is more flexible and open, but the team owns dependency, environment and web-operations decisions. JavaScript developers can use Plotly.js directly.
Plotly’s current first-party emphasis is Python and JavaScript. Its user guide says documentation for MATLAB, R, Julia and F# is being retired, and Dash documentation for several of those languages was retired on May 30, 2025. The existing Plotly MATLAB library may remain useful for established workflows, but it is a maintenance signal rather than evidence of a future-proof replacement path.

Licensing and total cost
MATLAB
On August 16, 2026, MathWorks displayed USD 940 per year for one individual United States configuration. This is a dated pricing snapshot, not a universal MATLAB price: intended use, region, taxes, term, toolboxes and Simulink change the amount. Campus-wide agreements may provide MATLAB and Simulink to eligible students, staff and researchers, so students should check their institution first.
Best Value
- Preloaded with software, including Cabri Jr. interactive geometry software.
- Up to ten graphing functions defined, saved, graphed and analyzed at one time.
- Advanced functions accessed through pull-down display menus.
- Horizontal and vertical split screen options. Vibrant backlit color screen
- I/o port for communication with other TI products.Seven different graph styles for differentiating the look of each graph drawn. Fourteen interactive zoom features
Plotly and Dash
Plotly states that its open-source libraries work offline and do not require account registration; the free-library information is described at Plotly’s licensing page. Hosting, enterprise deployment, infrastructure, security integration, support and staff time can still create costs. Plotly Cloud has a free starting plan, but current paid-tier prices were not established here; Dash Enterprise pricing should be obtained from the vendor.
Platform and compatibility details
MathWorks’ R2026a requirements are release-specific. MathWorks says new MATLAB releases are no longer available for Intel-based Macs beginning with R2026a; consult the platform roadmap for Apple Silicon and earlier releases. Windows R2026a requirements include Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 23H2 or higher and selected Windows Server editions. MathWorks recommends at least 8 GB RAM and a WebGL 2.0-capable GPU with at least 2 GB for performant Windows graphics.
Plotly libraries are generally portable wherever the supported Python or JavaScript runtime works, but browsers, servers, dependencies and deployment policies still matter. Portability does not remove maintenance responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich should you choose?
Choose MATLAB when
- Numerical analysis, simulation or engineering is the central task.
- You need MathWorks toolboxes, Simulink, code generation or hardware workflows.
- Your institution or employer already licenses MATLAB.
- Vendor support and an integrated environment outweigh open-source flexibility.
Choose Plotly with Python or JavaScript when
- Interactive browser graphics are the main deliverable.
- You need a dashboard or analytical web application.
- You prefer open-source tooling and web deployment.
- Viewers should explore results without a MATLAB installation.
Use both when
- MATLAB remains the best analysis engine but Plotly is a better presentation layer.
- Existing MATLAB code is valuable and a complete rewrite is unjustified.
- You want a staged migration, exporting selected results to a browser rather than replacing the computation immediately.
Can Plotly replace MATLAB?
| Workload | Answer |
|---|---|
| Basic plotting | Often, especially with Python or JavaScript data already prepared. |
| Interactive web graphics | Usually, if browser delivery and application controls are the priority. |
| Numerical computing | Not by itself; a broader Python scientific stack is required. |
| Engineering toolboxes and Simulink | No equivalent is supplied by Plotly. |
| MATLAB-to-Python migration | Plotly is one visualization component, not the complete replacement plan. |
The practical rule is simple: choose MATLAB for integrated technical computing and engineering; choose Plotly for open, interactive, browser-first visualization and dashboards. Choose both when MATLAB should perform the analysis and Plotly should present it.
