To improve VALORANT performance, first identify whether you have low client FPS, uneven frame times, input delay, high ping, packet loss, or a server-side problem. Each needs a different fix: graphics changes cannot repair a network issue, and an FPS counter alone cannot reveal stutter. Start with VALORANT’s performance graphs, change one setting at a time, and avoid registry, timer, or “debloat” tweaks.

Identify what is going wrong

What you notice What it may indicate First check
Low FPS most of the time CPU or GPU limit, power restriction, unsuitable settings, or thermal throttling VALORANT’s FPS and CPU/GPU render-time graphs; temperatures and clocks
High FPS, but motion looks jerky Frame-time spikes, a driver or overlay issue, background work, or a display-sync problem Frame-time graph; disable overlays one at a time
FPS falls during fights CPU load, effects, background interruption, heat, or driver trouble CPU render time and process activity during the drop
FPS stays near 60, 120, or 144 A game, driver, Windows, or display limit Frame caps and the monitor’s selected refresh rate
High ping or packet-loss warnings A connection, router, ISP, or route problem Network graphs; test a wired connection
Low server FPS indicator A server-side performance issue VALORANT’s server-performance graph, rather than local graphics settings
Controls feel delayed despite high FPS VSync, queued frames, display mode, or system latency VSync, latency options, and frame pacing

Riot separates client FPS, server performance, ping, and packet loss in its VALORANT instability guide. Use that distinction before changing settings: a faster GPU will not lower your ISP’s routing latency.

Establish a repeatable baseline

  1. Restart the PC. If you use a laptop, plug it into AC power and select the manufacturer’s appropriate performance mode.
  2. Close browsers, launchers, recorders, RGB utilities, and overlays that are not needed for the test.
  3. Open VALORANT and go to Settings → Video → Stats. Turn on the available client FPS, frame-time, CPU/GPU render-time, network RTT, packet-loss, and server-performance graphs.
  4. Play a consistent test scenario and note the average FPS, the lowest observed FPS, whether frame times spike, and whether the problem appears in the range, Deathmatch, or a normal match.
  5. After each change, repeat the same test at the same resolution and settings. Change one major variable at a time so you can tell what helped.

For additional context, Windows includes diagnostic tools you can open from Start or Run: dxdiag shows DirectX and display-driver information; msinfo32 lists system and BIOS details; resmon shows CPU, memory, disk, and network activity; and perfmon /rel opens Reliability Monitor for crashes and update timing. These tools can help identify clues, but none proves the cause of an FPS problem by itself.

Check whether your PC meets Riot’s requirements

Riot lists Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or 64-bit Windows 11; a CPU supporting SSE 4.2 or AVX; 4 GB of RAM; and 1 GB of VRAM. Its published performance tiers are approximate reference points, not guarantees for every map, patch, resolution, background workload, or PC configuration.

Riot’s reference tier Approximate target Example CPU Example GPU
Minimum 30 FPS Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220
Recommended 60 FPS Intel i3-4150 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 NVIDIA GT 730 or AMD Radeon R7 240
High-end 144+ FPS Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon R7 370, or Intel Arc A310

These are the examples and tiers on Riot’s VALORANT PC specifications page. Meeting a listed tier does not promise that frame rate in every situation. Riot also lists TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot as Windows 11 requirements for VALORANT. Do not disable these security features as a performance experiment.

Choose settings for the actual bottleneck

In Settings → Video → Stats, compare CPU and GPU render time during the slow moments. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using those graphs to determine whether a system is CPU-bound or GPU-bound. Older or integrated-graphics systems may be GPU-limited; newer systems can be CPU-limited. Riot explains this distinction in its engineering discussion of VALORANT shaders and gameplay clarity.

Start with a competitive baseline

Use these as test settings, not universal rules. Menu names and availability can vary by patch and hardware.

  • Display mode: Try Fullscreen first. Compare with borderless or windowed mode if you are troubleshooting a specific compatibility or stutter issue.
  • Resolution: Start at your monitor’s native resolution. Lower it only if evidence points to a GPU limit; it may do little for a CPU-limited system.
  • Multithreaded Rendering: Turn it on when the option is available and supported.
  • Material, Detail, and UI Quality: Start at Low. Riot specifically identifies Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality as settings worth lowering when diagnosing low FPS.
  • Texture Quality: Try Low or Medium. Whether it helps depends on the GPU and its available memory.
  • Vignette: Off.
  • VSync: Off if you prioritize low latency and accept possible tearing. If tear-free presentation matters more, test VSync and your display’s adaptive-sync options instead.
  • Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering: Start with Off or a low-cost option, then test visual quality against performance.
  • Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows: Turn these off while diagnosing, as Riot recommends, then re-enable any you prefer if performance remains stable.

If the GPU is limiting performance

  1. Lower resolution or render scale, if available, and check whether GPU render time and FPS improve.
  2. Lower Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality, then disable Bloom, Distortion, Cast Shadows, and sharpening effects.
  3. Close GPU-accelerated video playback and overlays, and confirm the game is using the intended GPU.
  4. If the issue began after a graphics-driver update, test the current driver and then a known-stable previous version.

If GPU render time remains the limit, changes to network settings or adding RAM are unlikely to solve the central problem.

  • Good compatibility, great for most mechanical keyboards, a strong sense of paragraphing, suitable for users pursuing feel and performance, and suitable for typists, enjoy the rhythm of work and games.
  • Packaging: 10 PCS 3 pin keyboard dustproof switches.

If the CPU is limiting performance

  1. Lower Detail and UI Quality and close browsers, recording tools, launchers, and monitoring utilities.
  2. Check CPU temperature and sustained clock speed during the slow moments.
  3. Try a frame cap your PC can maintain during combat instead of an extreme uncapped target.
  4. Check whether one or a few CPU cores are heavily loaded; total CPU utilization can hide a per-core limit.

Lowering resolution usually does not help much when CPU render time is the constraint. Riot’s engineering discussion describes why GPU advances can leave newer systems CPU-bound in VALORANT.

Decide whether to cap FPS

An uncapped frame rate may reduce latency when the PC can render substantially more frames than the display refresh rate, but it can also increase heat, power use, fan noise, and load without improving consistency. A cap can smooth frame delivery and reduce power draw, especially on a laptop, but a cap set too low may make the game feel less responsive.

Test a cap that remains stable during fights, not just in the practice range. Compare frame-time consistency and responsiveness with uncapped play. There is no single cap that suits every refresh rate, PC, or latency preference; avoid leaving every limiter uncapped, including in menus and background states.

Check Windows, laptop power, and background software

Make sure the game has power and the right GPU

  • On a laptop, play plugged in and compare the manufacturer’s silent, balanced, and performance modes. Battery operation can limit performance.
  • On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add VALORANT if necessary, select it, choose Options, then choose High performance if you want to prefer the discrete GPU. The executable to add can differ by installation.
  • Use the same test to check whether the issue changes with the selected GPU or power mode. Monitor temperature and clock speed rather than assuming a higher-performance setting always helps.

Microsoft documents per-app GPU selection and windowed-game optimizations in its Windows 11 windowed-game support page. Windowed-game optimization is relevant when you use windowed or borderless modes; it is not a general FPS guarantee.

Test background applications one at a time

  • Turn off Xbox Game Bar capture if it is recording, and temporarily disable Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Steam, and other overlays individually.
  • Close browser video playback, cloud-sync tasks, and unnecessary RGB, motherboard-monitoring, fan-control, or peripheral utilities for the test.
  • Do not disable antivirus or create broad exclusions as a routine fix. Only make security changes when the relevant vendor specifically recommends them.

If the cause remains unclear, a clean boot can help identify software conflicts. Keep Riot Vanguard requirements intact, re-enable startup items methodically, and restore any changes that do not help.

Troubleshoot stutter and frame-time spikes

A high average FPS can hide inconsistent delivery. Compare frame-time behavior during the hitch rather than relying on the average counter. Work through these checks:

  1. Note whether stutter began after a VALORANT, Windows, or graphics-driver update; record the date.
  2. Compare Fullscreen with borderless or windowed mode, changing nothing else for that test.
  3. Disable overlays and capture software one at a time.
  4. Use Resource Monitor to look for memory pressure, disk activity, or another process that rises during the hitch.
  5. Watch CPU/GPU temperatures, utilization, and clock speeds for drops that align with the stutter.
  6. Reset driver-level graphics overrides to defaults and try a stable frame cap.
  7. Update graphics, chipset, and other relevant drivers through the PC or component manufacturer. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the previous driver.
  8. Riot has noted that Alt-Tab and background-FPS limits can interact with focus and buffered states in some situations; see its gameplay consistency update if the stutter follows switching away from and back to the game.

A clean graphics-driver installation is a later step if a normal update or rollback does not resolve a driver-related problem. Prefer the GPU maker’s official installer rather than unofficial driver-debloat packages.

Keep graphics drivers and latency settings under control

If VALORANT offers NVIDIA Reflex, try On first. Reflex may improve responsiveness by reducing queued frames and system latency; it is not a general-purpose FPS booster. Treat On + Boost as an experiment, not a guaranteed improvement. Avoid forcing multiple latency modes in both the game and NVIDIA Control Panel without testing each change separately. NVIDIA distinguishes frame rate from latency in its Reflex Analyzer explanation.

AMD

Keep AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and the driver current through AMD’s software support page. Use a per-game profile rather than forcing settings globally. Check whether Radeon Chill or another frame limiter is capping FPS; review Enhanced Sync, VSync, and Anti-Lag if the problem concerns synchronization or latency. Anti-Lag is a latency feature, not a guaranteed FPS increase. Change one driver option at a time, and revert a new feature or driver if the issue began immediately after its introduction. AMD documents per-game graphics options in its graphics-settings guide.

Check heat, power, memory, and storage

Look for throttling, not just a high temperature

Temperature alone does not prove that heat is causing poor performance. Look for a pattern: temperature rises, CPU or GPU clocks fall, frame times worsen or FPS drops, then performance recovers after cooling or reducing load. Check temperatures, clocks, utilization, and power draw together.

  • Clear dust from vents and filters, make sure fans work, and place a laptop on a hard surface with unobstructed airflow.
  • Compare plugged-in with battery performance and check that the power adapter is appropriate for the laptop.
  • Consider quiet fan profiles, blocked airflow, cooling faults, or desktop components configured below their rated power targets.
  • Avoid aggressive overclocking or undervolting unless you understand how to restore stable settings.

Memory and storage are conditional fixes

Riot’s listed minimum is 4 GB RAM, but that does not mean 4 GB is comfortable for Windows, VALORANT, voice chat, browsers, and recording tools. If memory is nearly full, paging to storage can cause hitching. Dual-channel memory can help integrated graphics and some CPU-limited systems, but adding RAM will not fix a GPU limit when sufficient memory is already free. Enabling XMP or EXPO can affect stability and depends on the CPU and motherboard; do not expect a fixed FPS gain.

An SSD can improve booting, launching, patching, and loading, and may reduce storage-related stalls if the current drive is slow, nearly full, or failing. It is not a guaranteed average-FPS upgrade when VALORANT already runs from a healthy SSD and the system is CPU-bound.

Separate network problems from PC performance

  • Client FPS is the rate at which your PC renders frames.
  • Frame time describes how consistently those frames arrive.
  • Ping is network round-trip latency; packet loss means packets are missing or not arriving reliably.
  • Server FPS is server-side processing performance.

If the issue is high ping or packet loss, restart network equipment, test with Ethernet, check ping to other services, and contact your ISP if the route or connection appears to be the cause. Riot’s instability guide also recommends network diagnostics such as tracert <server-or-domain>. A timeout from an intermediate hop alone does not prove a fault; some routers do not answer traceroute probes.

Know when a hardware upgrade is justified

What testing shows What to consider When it is unlikely to help
GPU render time is consistently limiting and GPU use is high Lower resolution/settings first; consider a GPU upgrade if the limit persists CPU render time, heat, or background software is the actual constraint
CPU render time is limiting while the GPU is underused Reduce CPU-side load; consider a CPU or platform upgrade if the limit persists The problem is GPU saturation, driver stutter, or network quality
Memory is nearly full and paging occurs Add RAM or correct an unsuitable memory configuration There is ample free memory and another component is limiting
Laptop clocks collapse under heat Improve airflow, service the cooling system, or consider a different machine FPS is limited by ping or unrelated software
Drive is slow, nearly full, failing, or causing obvious stalls Replace it with a suitable SSD and keep adequate free space The complaint is average in-match FPS on a healthy SSD
Stable FPS exceeds the monitor’s refresh rate but motion remains limited Check monitor refresh settings and connection; consider a faster-refresh display The PC cannot sustain the target rate or frame times are unstable
Network graphs show high RTT or packet loss Check the router, wired connection, route, or ISP A GPU upgrade cannot repair the network path

Buy only after the measurements point to a specific limit. A CPU, GPU, RAM, cooling, storage, monitor, or network change addresses different problems; no single upgrade is an all-purpose FPS fix.

Escalate a reproducible problem

If the issue persists, preserve the evidence rather than trying risky tweaks. Record the hardware, Windows and driver versions, date the problem began, exact settings, and steps that reproduce it. Save screenshots or a short video of the graphs and check Reliability Monitor for relevant crashes. If an update appears responsible, test a controlled rollback. Send the reproducible details and relevant logs to Riot Player Support. Avoid registry “FPS tweaks,” timer-resolution changes, random bcdedit commands, forced CPU affinity, disabling security features or Vanguard, and unofficial debloat scripts: they can create instability or weaken security without addressing the measured bottleneck.
