The fastest way to find your Windows 10 computer’s local IP address is to open Command Prompt, run ipconfig, and read the IPv4 Address under the active Wi‑Fi or Ethernet adapter. You can also find it through Settings if you prefer a graphical method.
Find your IP address in Windows 10 Settings
Windows 10’s labels vary slightly between releases, but the address is in the properties for the connection currently carrying network traffic.
Wi‑Fi connection
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi.
- Select the connected Wi‑Fi network or its properties.
- Look under Properties for IPv4 address.
Some builds instead show Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status > View hardware and connection properties, or a Hardware properties link under Wi‑Fi. Microsoft documents these network-settings routes here: Essential network settings and tasks in Windows.
Ethernet connection
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet.
- Select the active Ethernet connection.
- In Properties, find IPv4 address.
If both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are enabled, use the address under the connection that is actually connected. Do not copy an address from a disconnected adapter.

Find it faster with Command Prompt
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, and open it.
- Type
ipconfigand press Enter. - Find the connected section, such as
Wireless LAN adapter Wi-FiorEthernet adapter Ethernet. - Copy the value next to IPv4 Address.
Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:

Which address do you need?

An IP address identifies a network interface. A local/private address is assigned inside your network; a public address is normally assigned to the router or internet connection. Common private IPv4 ranges are 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255. These ranges are reserved for internal networks and are not globally routable, as documented by IANA and RFC 1918.

A public IP alone does not make a PC reachable from the internet. Router NAT, firewall rules, ISP restrictions, and application settings can still block inbound connections.
Why are there several IP addresses?
Multiple entries are normal when Windows has more than one network interface or when IPv4 and IPv6 are both enabled. Common causes include:

- Wi‑Fi and Ethernet both enabled.
- A VPN connection.
- Hyper‑V, VirtualBox, VMware, or another virtual network adapter.
- Bluetooth networking.
- IPv4 and IPv6 addresses on the same adapter.
- Disconnected or disabled adapters still listed in command output.
For a printer, shared folder, or other device on the same local network, choose the active physical adapter’s local IPv4 address. A VPN address is generally useful only within that VPN. If you need internet-facing access, plan for router configuration and firewall rules as well as the correct public or local address.

An address in 169.254.0.0–169.254.255.255 usually means Windows assigned itself an Automatic Private IP Address because it could not obtain a normal address from DHCP. - Confirm that Wi‑Fi is connected to the intended network, or check the Ethernet cable and port.
- In Command Prompt, run
ipconfig /release. - Then run
ipconfig /renew. - If name-resolution problems remain, run
ipconfig /flushdns.
Microsoft lists these commands in its Windows Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance. If the address remains in the 169.254 range, check the router’s power and DHCP service, the adapter status, cable or wireless signal, and any required captive-portal sign-in.
Optional PowerShell method
Advanced users can list IPv4 addresses with:

Where-Object {$_.IPAddress -notlike '127.*'}For most Windows 10 users, ipconfig remains simpler and is directly documented for this task.
Other details that prevent confusion
- DHCP addresses can change: A typical home-network address is leased by the router and may differ later. For a device that must keep the same address, use a router DHCP reservation or configure a static local address deliberately.
- No internet is required: Windows can display a locally assigned address without internet access, provided a network interface has a configured address.
- IP is not MAC: The physical address shown by
ipconfig /allis the adapter’s MAC address, not its IP address. - Protect screenshots: Avoid publicly posting public IPs, VPN addresses, computer names, MAC addresses, or workplace network details.
Windows 10 support status
These tools continue to work on existing Windows 10 installations. Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the operating system still functions, but standard technical assistance, feature updates, and security updates ended on that date. See Microsoft’s support notice.
