Windows 11 has no universal “force update” command. The right method depends on what you mean: checking immediately for an offered security update, installing a feature release before staged rollout reaches your PC, applying one specific KB package, or repairing a failed update system. Start with Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Use Microsoft’s Installation Assistant only for a compatible feature upgrade, and treat ISO or USB installation as either an in-place upgrade or a potentially destructive clean install.

First, identify the update you need

These cases use different tools and have different risks.

Goal Recommended method What it does not guarantee
Install an update already offered Windows Update in Settings It cannot make an update appear if Microsoft is withholding it.
Get a missing feature release Windows 11 Installation Assistant It still checks compatibility and may not proceed during a safeguard hold.
Apply one known KB Microsoft Update Catalog or the linked Microsoft KB article A package for the wrong release or architecture may fail or cause problems.
Repair repeated update failures Windows Update troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM and SFC, then an in-place repair Cache commands do not override hardware, policy or compatibility blocks.
Perform a fresh installation Bootable official Windows 11 media Booting from media can erase applications and personal files.

Check your version and architecture first

  1. Press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter to record the Windows edition, version and build. Microsoft documents this method at its Windows Update Assistant page.
  2. Open Settings > System > About and check whether the processor is x64 or ARM64. This matters because Installation Assistant is for compatible x64 PCs and does not run on ARM-based PCs.
  3. Back up important files before a feature upgrade, cache reset, ISO work or any clean installation.

Force Windows 11 to check for available updates

  1. Connect the computer to AC power and a reliable internet connection. Save work and close applications.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. For an offered package, select Download & install.
  5. Choose Restart now, or schedule the restart Windows offers. A download can finish before installation is complete; the restart may be required.
  6. After Windows starts again, return to Windows Update and check once more.

Microsoft’s supported procedure is documented at Install Windows updates. “You’re up to date” means there is currently no applicable package for that device; it does not necessarily mean the PC has the newest feature version available worldwide.

Opt in to earlier updates when offered

In Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options, Windows may show a setting such as Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Turning it on can make eligible non-security improvements and feature-related changes arrive earlier. Labels and placement vary by Windows 11 release, so verify the current wording on the PC. This setting does not promise to bypass every staged rollout or safeguard hold. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

Install a missing feature update with Installation Assistant

If Windows Update has not offered a feature release and the PC is compatible, download Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page. Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update when possible, but documents the Assistant as a supported manual installation method.

Requirements and limitations

  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 license.
  • Windows 10 version 2004 or later when upgrading from Windows 10.
  • Administrator access.
  • At least 9 GB of free space for the Assistant to download Windows 11, according to Microsoft’s download page.
  • A compatible x64 processor. The Assistant does not run on ARM-based PCs.

Installation steps

  1. Open the official download page and select Download Now under Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
  2. Run the downloaded tool as an administrator.
  3. Allow it to check hardware compatibility.
  4. Accept the license terms, then select Accept and install.
  5. Select Restart now when prompted. The computer can restart several times; keep it powered on and do not interrupt the process.

Installation Assistant does not guarantee installation when requirements fail or Microsoft has placed a compatibility safeguard hold. Do not use registry hacks or unofficial bypass tools as a routine workaround.

Upgrade with an ISO or USB installation media

In-place upgrade that keeps files and apps

  1. Download an official ISO or create installation media from the Windows 11 download page.
  2. While signed in to your existing Windows installation, open the ISO or USB in File Explorer.
  3. Run setup.exe.
  4. When prompted, select Keep personal files and apps, then continue.
  5. Let Setup complete and restart the PC.

Microsoft describes this as an upgrade path that can preserve personal files, installed applications and settings: Ways to install Windows 11. Confirm the keep option before accepting the installation.

Clean installation warning

Booting from installation media is destructive unless you have separately backed up and deliberately selected a safe partition. It can erase the existing Windows installation, applications and personal data. Use it only for a fresh system, and verify your backup, BitLocker recovery key, license information and required installers first. Microsoft’s clean-install guidance is on the same installation methods page.

Install one specific KB update manually

  1. Find the exact KB number in Settings > Windows Update > Update history or in the error message.
  2. Confirm the Windows release with winver and the architecture in Settings > System > About.
  3. Download only from the Microsoft Update Catalog or the official KB article linked by Microsoft.
  4. Match the package to the Windows release, x64 or ARM64 architecture, edition and servicing baseline.
  5. Install it, restart, then review Update history.

Do not use randomly hosted .msu files. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance explains why release and architecture matching matters: Troubleshoot Windows Update issues.

Why an update may not appear

  • Microsoft is rolling the feature update out gradually.
  • A known compatibility problem has triggered a safeguard hold.
  • The PC fails feature-update hardware requirements, or the update targets another Windows release or architecture.
  • Updates are paused, a prerequisite update is missing, or a restart is pending.
  • An employer, school, WSUS, Intune policy or update ring controls availability.
  • The device is scanning the wrong update endpoint or is enrolled in a different channel.

A missing feature update can therefore be intentional. Forcing past a safeguard hold can introduce crashes, driver failures or application incompatibilities. Microsoft lists deployment state, scan source, enrollment, prerequisites and safeguard holds as possible causes in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.

Fix Windows Update when it is stuck or fails

Use the least invasive remedy that fits the symptom.

  1. Run the troubleshooter. In current Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the Windows Update troubleshooter. The manual path is Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
  2. Check basics. Ensure power, network, automatic date/time/time zone, administrator access and adequate storage. Disconnect unnecessary external hardware.
  3. Update drivers. Obtain current drivers from the PC or component manufacturer. Error 0xC1900101 commonly indicates a driver incompatibility.
  4. Investigate interference. Temporarily disconnect a VPN. If third-party security software is identified as incompatible, follow the vendor’s removal guidance; do not leave protection disabled.
  5. Reset the update cache. Use the graphical or command-line procedures below.
  6. Repair system files. Run DISM, then SFC as shown below.
  7. Use an in-place repair upgrade. Run setup.exe from official media and retain files and apps.
  8. Reserve a clean install for last. It requires a verified backup and can erase the drive.

Graphical cache reset

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Stop the Windows Update service.
  3. Open C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and delete the files and folders inside it, not unrelated system directories.
  4. Start the Windows Update service, restart the PC, then use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Command-line cache reset

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run each line in order:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv

Restart Windows before checking again. These commands rename update caches; they do not bypass policy, hardware requirements or safeguard holds. Microsoft documents both reset methods at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Repair damaged system files

In an elevated Command Prompt, run DISM first and wait for it to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Restart and retry Windows Update. These tools repair component-store and protected system-file corruption; they do not make an incompatible feature update applicable.

Free-space requirements are not one number

Guidance Figure and qualification
Installation Assistant At least 9 GB free to download Windows 11, stated on Microsoft’s download page.
Microsoft troubleshooting guidance At least 20 GB free for a 64-bit OS upgrade or 16 GB for a 32-bit OS upgrade.

These figures are not interchangeable guarantees. Temporary files, rollback data, language packs and the existing installation can require more space. Error 0x800f0922 can involve insufficient space or component problems, so storage is not automatically the only cause.

How to confirm the update worked

  1. Run winver and record the new Windows version and OS build.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and verify the relevant quality or feature update.
  3. Check that Windows Update shows no pending restart and no repeat failure.

As observed on August 18, 2026, Microsoft’s download page identified Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2 as the current release. Release availability changes, so check the official page immediately before upgrading: Microsoft Windows 11 download.

Windows 10 to Windows 11 considerations

Microsoft’s free Windows 10 support and security-fix period ended October 14, 2025. When moving from Windows 10, verify that the PC meets Windows 11 requirements, that Windows 10 is version 2004 or later for Installation Assistant, and that you have a current backup. Unsupported installations can have compatibility, support and update consequences; Microsoft’s warning appears on the official download page.
