No verified evidence shows that Justin Long personally abandoned Apple. On June 3, 2024, the actor best known as Apple’s “I’m a Mac” appeared in a Qualcomm commercial that mocked scripted Mac frustrations and promoted Snapdragon X-powered Windows PCs. The “switch” is an advertising premise, not a documented report that Long bought or now relies on a particular Windows laptop.
What happened on June 3, 2024?
Qualcomm unveiled the commercial during its Computex 2024 keynote. Long appears in the familiar role that made him recognizable as Apple’s Mac character, then encounters staged notifications about software compatibility, storage and battery life. Frustrated, he searches for a “Snapdragon-powered PC.” The punchline is: “Things change.”
The sequence is a deliberate reversal of Apple’s “Get a Mac” campaign. Qualcomm reused the audience’s memory of Long as the personified Mac to make Snapdragon-powered Windows PCs look like the next platform for the character. MacRumors’ report describes the skit and its setup.
Who is the “I’m a Mac” guy?
He is actor Justin Long. Apple cast Long opposite John Hodgman’s PC in the “Get a Mac” advertising campaign, which began in 2006 and ran for several years. The ads turned the two actors into personifications of competing platforms, making Long closely associated with Apple in popular culture.

That association does not make Long an Apple employee, a hardware engineer or an independent authority on computer platforms. It is precisely why his appearance has advertising value. His recognizable role has also been used by other technology companies to sell competing products, so the Qualcomm appearance fits a recurring marketing pattern rather than documenting a personal computing manifesto. MacRumors notes those earlier uses of his advertising identity.
Did Justin Long really switch from Apple to Windows?
Not based on the evidence available. The commercial shows a character portrayed by Long deciding to look for a Snapdragon PC, but it does not establish any of the following:
- that Long uses a Snapdragon laptop as his primary computer;
- that he purchased a specific Windows model;
- that he stopped using Apple hardware; or
- that the complaints in the script came from his independently documented experience.
The accurate description is that Qualcomm’s ad depicts Long switching sides. It is a paid endorsement and scripted performance, not a hardware-ownership report.
What Qualcomm was actually selling
The ad promotes Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series, including Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors. Qualcomm announced more than 20 initial designs from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung, with the first systems identified for availability beginning June 18, 2024. Qualcomm’s platform pitch combines:
- an ARM-based CPU architecture intended to improve performance per watt;
- long unplugged runtime and, in some designs, quieter or fanless operation;
- an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) for supported on-device AI workloads; and
- Windows software support through ARM64-native applications and translation of many older x86 and x64 programs.
Those are platform capabilities, not guarantees that every Snapdragon laptop has identical speed, battery life, cooling, display quality or compatibility. Results vary with the manufacturer’s chassis, battery capacity, screen, memory, storage, firmware and power settings.
What “Windows on Arm” means
Most traditional Windows PCs use x86 or x64 processors from Intel or AMD. Snapdragon X computers use ARM64 processors instead. Software written specifically for ARM64 can run natively, while many older Windows applications can run through Microsoft’s built-in translation layer, called Prism in current Windows-on-Arm documentation.
Qualcomm’s developer guidance describes three practical approaches:
| Software path | How it works | Typical implication |
|---|---|---|
| ARM64 native | The application is compiled for the processor architecture. | Best opportunity for platform performance and efficiency. |
| x86/x64 emulation through Prism | Windows translates legacy binaries without requiring a rewrite. | Convenient compatibility bridge, but performance and battery use can differ from native execution. |
| Hybrid application | Some components are ARM64 while others remain x86/x64. | Compatibility depends on every component, plug-in and helper process. |
Compatibility is therefore not a simple “works” or “doesn’t work” question. An application may launch successfully yet have an incompatible updater, plug-in, driver or background service. Kernel-level software, specialized peripherals, virtualization tools and some game anti-cheat systems can block an otherwise ordinary installation.

Are the commercial’s Mac complaints fair?
They are advertising claims selected for a joke, not a balanced comparison of macOS and Windows.
App compatibility
The ad treats compatibility as a Mac weakness, but Windows on Arm has its own exceptions. Older utilities, kernel drivers, virtualization software, specialized accessories, plug-ins and some games may lack ARM support. Windows Central pointed out that several issues highlighted by the commercial can also occur on Windows PCs.
Storage warnings
A low-disk-space alert mainly reflects the size of a computer’s SSD and the user’s files or applications. A Windows laptop with a small drive can produce the same warning; it is not inherently a macOS problem.
Battery warnings
Efficient ARM hardware can be a real advantage, but battery comparisons require equivalent screen brightness, workload, wireless conditions, battery capacity and power settings. Microsoft and Qualcomm have published claims such as up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing for specified Snapdragon X Elite test conditions in Microsoft’s announcement. Those figures are test-condition claims, not a universal result for every retail laptop.

Why the platform matters beyond the joke
Windows on Arm is significant because it attempts a transition similar in broad concept to Apple’s move from Intel Macs to Apple silicon: use an efficient ARM-based architecture while maintaining access to an established software catalog during the transition.
The analogy has limits. Apple controls its processors, operating system and much of the software stack. Qualcomm supplies a platform used by many manufacturers, Microsoft supplies Windows, and each laptop maker controls its own thermal design, battery and firmware. Windows also has a much larger and more fragmented driver and peripheral ecosystem. Consequently, one Snapdragon model’s results cannot be generalized to all Windows-on-Arm machines.
An NPU can accelerate particular local AI features when software is written to use it. Its presence does not automatically make every application faster or every Copilot+ feature exclusive to Snapdragon hardware.
Who should consider a Snapdragon X Windows laptop?
Potentially good fit
- People whose work is mainly web apps, Microsoft 365, email, video meetings and mainstream productivity software.
- Buyers who prioritize long unplugged use and low fan noise.
- Windows users who have verified ARM compatibility for their essential applications and accessories.
- People who do not depend on obscure legacy drivers or high-end PC gaming.
Proceed cautiously
- Users of kernel-level utilities, custom enterprise security tools or niche business software.
- Owners of older scanners, printers, audio interfaces or industrial equipment.
- People who require particular virtual machines, CUDA workflows or discrete-GPU software stacks.
- Gamers dependent on anti-cheat systems or launchers with architecture-specific components.
- Anyone who needs older plug-ins, shell extensions or proprietary peripherals to work without testing.
Compatibility checklist before buying
- List every essential application, plug-in, driver, game and peripheral.
- Check whether each item has an ARM64-native Windows release.
- If it does not, verify support for its x86/x64 version under Windows 11 Prism.
- Read the software or hardware maker’s support documentation, not just a retailer specification.
- Check game-specific anti-cheat support if gaming is important.
- Confirm the exact laptop’s monitor limits, ports, dock support, webcam and display resolution.
- Use a seller with a practical return policy when a critical workflow cannot be tested first.
- Judge the exact model; do not assume every Snapdragon X laptop behaves the same way.
Common failure modes
The application opens but feels slow
Emulation can allow an application to launch while using more power or delivering lower performance than an ARM64-native build. The meaningful test is whether it handles the reader’s real workload, not merely whether it starts.

A peripheral does not work
The application may be compatible while the printer, scanner or accessory fails because its driver has not been ported to ARM64.
The installer or updater fails
Launchers, installers and update services sometimes contain architecture-specific helpers even when the main application is compatible.
A Windows game will not run
Games may rely on anti-cheat drivers, graphics components or launchers that do not behave like ordinary user-mode x86 software. “Windows game” does not automatically mean “works on Windows on Arm.”
A published benchmark does not match the retail machine
Qualcomm’s figures can use reference designs or specified test conditions. Retail systems differ in thermal limits, battery size, resolution, memory configuration and firmware tuning. Qualcomm explains this reference-design and test context in its battery and performance discussion.

Justin Long has not been documented as personally abandoning Apple. Qualcomm staged a clever callback to one of technology advertising’s most recognizable campaigns, using the former Mac character to promote a real Snapdragon X Windows platform. Windows on Arm is considerably more capable than earlier attempts, but its practical success still depends on the applications, drivers, games and peripherals attached to a specific laptop. Treat the commercial as a pitch—and verify your own workload before treating it as a buying recommendation.
