Final Cut Pro for iPad can fail because of an unsupported iPad, outdated software, exhausted storage, incompatible media, an accessory, a damaged project, or an account problem. There is no confirmed universal outage in the information available here, so diagnose the local cause first: back up your work, restart the iPad, disconnect accessories, verify compatibility and storage, update both systems, test the demo project, and reinstall only after a backup.
Apple currently lists iPadOS 18.6 or later and an iPad with an Apple M1 chip or later, A16, or A17 Pro. Apple’s release-notes page lists Final Cut Pro for iPad 3.2, released April 9, 2026. Check the current requirements and release notes because availability can change.
First, identify what is failing
| Symptom | Most useful first test |
|---|---|
| The app will not open or closes immediately | Restart, disconnect every accessory, check compatibility, storage and updates. |
| One project will not open | Open a blank or demo project; protect the original and investigate its media. |
| Playback is black, frozen or stutters | Test one short clip stored on the iPad, then compare another project. |
| Import fails | Check free storage, try another clip and test a converted copy. |
| Export hangs or fails | Check storage and missing media; export a short range as a diagnostic test. |
| Camera or Live Multicam fails | Test without cameras, update firmware and reconnect one device at a time. |
| Keyboard or Apple Pencil causes a crash | Update Final Cut Pro and test without the accessory. |
| The app cannot be downloaded or features are locked | Check device compatibility, the Apple Account and subscription entitlement. |
Check whether your iPad is compatible
Go to Settings > General > About to identify the model, then Settings > General > Software Update to check iPadOS. Final Cut Pro for iPad requires iPadOS 18.6 or later and an M1-or-newer, A16 or A17 Pro iPad. Older advice that cites iPadOS 16.4 and M1-only hardware describes the 2023 launch, not the current requirement. The iPad app is separate from Final Cut Pro for Mac.
Apple says projects and media need local storage on the iPad. External drives can help move or manage media, but they do not remove the need for working space on the device. Subscription access is also separate from technical failures: a missing entitlement can block use or features, but it does not explain every crash.

Fix Final Cut Pro for iPad in this order
-
Back up before changing anything
Back up the affected project and timelines and preserve original media while the app still opens. Do not delete the only local copy. Apple warns that deleting Final Cut Pro removes locally stored projects, timelines, imported media and related data. Follow Apple’s backup and troubleshooting guidance.
-
Restart the iPad
Perform a full restart. Open Final Cut Pro with accessories disconnected and test a small or known-good project.
-
Disconnect external devices
Turn off the iPad, disconnect cameras, hubs, drives, keyboards, Apple Pencil and audio devices, turn it on again, and retest. If the problem appears only after reconnecting one device, check that device’s firmware or software and its cable, power and hub.
-
Check storage
Open Settings > General > iPad Storage. Leave meaningful free space before importing, analyzing, rendering or exporting large media. Apple has documented an unexpected quit when importing with no storage remaining. Remove expendable files only after confirming that project media and backups are safe.

Update iPadOS and Final Cut Pro
Update iPadOS in Settings > General > Software Update and Final Cut Pro in the App Store. Apple’s notes for version 3.2 include fixes for crashes when splitting clips with a connected keyboard or Apple Pencil, soundtrack dragging, Transcript Search, Projects-screen behavior and other stability issues. Complete active work and back up first; an update is not a guarantee that every older project behaves identically.
-
Use the demo project as an isolation test
Download Apple’s demo project from within Final Cut Pro. If it also fails, suspect the app, iPadOS, storage or an accessory. If it works while your project fails, investigate that project or its media. This is a practical diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee of the cause.
-
Test media and formats
Try a different clip stored on the iPad. Isolate the file that causes black frames, missing sound or an unsupported-format message. Check Apple’s supported-media guidance, and if necessary transcode a problem clip to a commonly supported format. Unusual HDR, log, high-frame-rate, multichannel-audio or variable-frame-rate footage can require particular care; do not assume every camera format is supported.
-
Check cameras and Live Multicam
Test with no camera attached, confirm the device is supported, update firmware, check cables, hubs, power and network conditions, then add one camera at a time. Apple’s release notes document fixes for Live Multicam discovery, connections, transfers, previews, synchronization and stability, so a feature-specific failure may be version-related.

-
Reinstall only after backup
Use this as the final local step: back up projects and media, remove Final Cut Pro, reinstall it from the App Store, restore or reopen the backup, and test before reconnecting accessories or importing the full library. Deletion can remove local projects, timelines, imported media and related data; iCloud should not be assumed to preserve every local project automatically.
If the app crashes or closes
- Check storage before reinstalling.
- Repeat the test with every accessory disconnected.
- Compare the exact action with Apple’s current release notes.
- Test a blank project and the demo project.
- If failure continues on a supported, updated iPad with no accessories, reinstall only after backup.
If one project will not open or play
Do not delete the original. Open another project, create a blank one and test Apple’s demo project. If those work, the likely boundary is the affected project, a missing external file, insufficient local space or a particular effect or clip. Try a known-good backup and relink or reconnect media only after protecting that backup.
If importing or exporting fails
Import
Check free space, then determine whether one clip or every clip fails. Test media copied to internal storage rather than a camera or external drive. A converted copy that imports successfully points to the source format or file rather than proving the app is broken.
Export
Check storage, missing media, analysis, captions and effects. Export a short range or duplicate the project and remove suspect clips to locate the failing section. A short successful export is a diagnostic workaround, not an Apple guarantee that the complete timeline is healthy.

Subscription, download and account problems
Final Cut Pro for iPad requires its own subscription and is not unlocked by a Final Cut Pro for Mac purchase. If the app is available but access or premium content is missing, verify the Apple Account, trial or subscription status, App Store billing and any Family Sharing arrangement. Those checks address entitlement; they will not repair an unsupported iPad, damaged project or incompatible media.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support when a supported iPad is updated, storage is available, all accessories are disconnected, the demo project also fails, and reinstalling did not help. Escalate immediately for suspected project loss or corruption, an App Store installation problem, billing or Apple Account entitlement issue, or a failure that persists across clean tests. Have the iPad model, iPadOS and Final Cut Pro versions, exact symptom, project backup status and accessory list ready.

Can low storage make Final Cut Pro crash?
Yes. Apple’s release notes document an unexpected quit when importing media with no remaining device storage.
Why does the demo project work while mine does not?
That comparison points toward the project, its media, storage links or a feature in its timeline rather than an app-wide failure. Preserve the original and test a backup.
Do I need a subscription?
Yes, Final Cut Pro for iPad requires its own subscription; a Mac license is separate. Subscription status affects access and features, not every crash or playback problem.
