Select text, open Edit > Transformations in the Mac menu bar, then choose Make Uppercase, Make Lowercase, or Capitalize. The menu is available in many text editors, but not every app or text field supports it. Also, Capitalize usually makes each word start with a capital; it may not apply the short-word rules used by editorial title case.
Change selected text with macOS Transformations
- Select the editable text you want to change.
- Open Edit from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not a toolbar inside the app window.
- Choose Transformations, then select Make Uppercase, Make Lowercase, or Capitalize.
If the command is not in the Edit menu, Control-click or right-click the selection and look for Transformations or Services. Apple documents Edit > Transformations in Numbers and Keynote, though availability can vary by app and field: Numbers capitalization controls and Keynote capitalization controls.
If a transformation produces the wrong result, use Edit > Undo or press Command-Z while the editing app is active.
Capitalize is not always editorial Title Case
These labels describe different results. For the sample phrase the quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog:

Editorial title case often leaves some short articles, conjunctions, and prepositions lowercase, but the exact rules depend on the style guide. Apple distinguishes Title Case from Start Case in Numbers; macOS’s native Capitalize command is not a promise to apply your publication’s title-case rules.
Create a reusable case-conversion Quick Action
When an app lacks the native command, a Mac shortcut can make the conversion available through Quick Actions or the Services menu. Apple’s Shortcuts guide describes running shortcuts from another app with selected content as input: Run a shortcut while working on a Mac. Shortcuts are built from actions, as outlined in the Shortcuts User Guide.

- Open Shortcuts and create a new shortcut.
- Open the shortcut’s Details panel. Enable Use as Quick Action and/or the Services Menu option, depending on the labels shown by your macOS version.
- Set the shortcut to receive Text and Rich Text input if those input choices are offered.
- Add the Change Case action and choose the case you want.
- Make sure the transformed text is returned as output. If the shortcut editor offers Provide Output or an output-replacement option, enable it when you want the calling app to receive the result.
- Name the shortcut for its specific job, such as Make Uppercase, Make Lowercase, or Start Case.
- Test on a short, reversible selection before relying on it for important text.
The intended flow is selected text into the shortcut, converted text out, and—if the app supports replacement—the new text in place of the selection. A shortcut that only displays its result has converted the text, but has not replaced the original selection.
Run the shortcut from another app or assign a key
Select text, then open the app’s Services menu or its contextual menu and choose your shortcut. In apps that expose Quick Actions, it may also be available there. Exact menu placement depends on the host app.

For a keyboard command, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services, find the shortcut under the relevant service category, and assign a key combination if macOS lists it. Choose a combination that does not conflict with an existing system or app shortcut. There is no single universal default keystroke for the built-in Transformations commands.
Spotlight is a separate option: Apple lists a Change Case action for copied text in its Spotlight documentation. It operates on copied text and should not be confused with a Services shortcut that processes and returns the current selection.

Fix a missing command or a shortcut that will not replace text
- No Transformations menu: Confirm that editable text is selected. Some fields are special controls rather than regular text editors, and some apps simply do not expose macOS text transformations. Check the contextual menu as well.
- The shortcut is missing or disabled: Confirm that it is enabled as a Quick Action or Services item and that its accepted input includes the selected text type. A field that does not supply text to Services may leave the item unavailable.
- The shortcut runs but does not replace the selection: Check that the Change Case action receives the selected text and returns text output. The host app must also permit replacement through Services; support is not guaranteed merely because the field accepts typing.
- Rich text loses styling: Case conversion concerns characters, and an app may not preserve formatting when text passes through a shortcut. Test with a sample if bold, links, or other styling matter.
- The target app does not support replacement: Copy the selection, run the shortcut on copied text, then copy its result and paste it back manually. This fallback requires extra steps and does not depend on selection replacement.
Reports about particular apps, including Microsoft apps and Messages, describe inconsistent behavior rather than a definitive compatibility list. Test the exact app and field you use; a successful result in one editor does not establish support everywhere. If you maintain an existing Automator workflow, Apple documents Quick Actions that can receive text and replace selected text with workflow output: Automator Quick Actions.

A Transformations command changes the selected characters themselves. Some apps also offer capitalization controls as text formatting, which may change how text appears without rewriting the underlying characters. Numbers and Keynote document capitalization controls alongside their text-editing features; check the app’s own behavior if the distinction matters for copying, exporting, or later editing.

Apple’s support documentation currently describes these menu and shortcut features, but labels and placement can differ between macOS releases. For occasional conversions, use the native menu where it is available; for repeated work or a preferred keyboard workflow, set up a Quick Action and verify that your target app can return the transformed text into the selection.
