BeyondPod did not appear to be permanently banned from Android Auto. In August 2018, users reported that it had vanished from Android Auto’s app list; BeyondPod’s later release notes point to a temporary blacklist related to Android Auto bugs, followed by a gradual restoration of visibility.

What Google disabled—and what it did not

The reported problem was that BeyondPod stopped showing up in Android Auto’s app list, even though users still had it on their phones. A user report dated August 4, 2018, records the disappearance, but it is user testimony rather than an official Google announcement: the contemporaneous discussion.

BeyondPod’s 4.2.40 release notes later referred to Google “un-blacklist[ing]” the app. That supports describing the incident as a temporary Android Auto visibility block—not a general Android app ban, a confirmed Play Store removal, or proof that BeyondPod could no longer be installed.

BeyondPod already supported Android Auto

This was a disruption to an existing integration. BeyondPod’s change history says version 4.1.36 added support for playing SmartPlays and feed or category episodes through Android Auto-compatible head units. An archived 4.1.44 beta listing also says a beta build was initially needed for the app to appear on an Android Auto head unit: BeyondPod 4.1.44 beta notes.

What Android Auto bugs did BeyondPod document?

BeyondPod’s own beta and release history records several Android Auto-related fixes. It does not establish that Google publicly listed these as the reasons for its decision, but the issues help explain why the integration could be considered disruptive in a car.

  • Taking focus on connection: BeyondPod could take over focus when Android Auto connected, interrupting the screen or experience the driver was using.
  • Repeated menu refreshes: The change history describes an Android Auto bug that caused a menu screen to refresh continuously. The notes attribute this behavior to an Android Auto bug, so it should not be treated as solely a BeyondPod defect.
  • Microphone interruptions: The release notes mention audio pausing while the microphone was active and resuming afterward.
  • Video in the car interface: BeyondPod changed how video tracks behaved in Android Auto so they would play as audio. That was a car-interface accommodation; it does not mean the app necessarily stopped playing video on the phone.

Automatic focus changes, unstable menus, interruptions, and unsuitable video behavior are all poor fits for a driving interface. The safety rationale is an interpretation of the documented problems and Android Auto’s in-car context, not a quoted explanation from Google.

Why the 4.2.40 release notes matter

The strongest evidence for a blacklist comes from the archived notes for BeyondPod 4.2.40. They describe Android Auto fixes—including microphone handling, video tracks playing as audio, and focus stealing—and say: “Once we un-blacklist BP, it will start showing up on user phones over the course of several days.”

That wording indicates a staged return: fixing the app did not necessarily make it visible immediately, because Google’s blacklist status still had to be lifted and the change could take days to reach phones. APKMirror dates its 4.2.40 package listing November 23, 2016; that date does not establish when the blacklist incident occurred. The dated user report places a public report of the disappearance at August 4, 2018, not necessarily the exact date Google applied the block.

Was Google trying to push users to Google Podcasts?

Some users in the August 2018 discussion speculated that BeyondPod disappeared to steer listeners toward Google Podcasts. The discussion offers no evidence establishing that motive. What is documented is the reported disappearance, BeyondPod’s Android Auto bug fixes, and the release-note reference to un-blacklisting. Those facts support a temporary compatibility-related block more strongly than a claim of deliberate sabotage or anticompetitive action.

What users could try if BeyondPod was missing

For someone troubleshooting the historical issue, these were reasonable checks, not guaranteed fixes. A missing app could also reflect launcher settings, an outdated build, installation source, device compatibility, a stale cache, or a separate connection problem.

  1. Update BeyondPod to a release containing the Android Auto fixes, if a compatible, trustworthy update is available.
  2. Update Android Auto and Google Play services where the device supports those updates.
  3. Open BeyondPod on the phone, then disconnect and reconnect the phone to the vehicle.
  4. Restart the phone and the vehicle’s head unit if reconnecting does not refresh the app list.
  5. Check Android Auto’s phone-side launcher or app customization screen to see whether BeyondPod is hidden there.
  6. Allow time for any platform-side visibility change to propagate; the 4.2.40 note said reappearance could take several days.
  7. If it remains absent, consult BeyondPod’s support or beta channel rather than installing an arbitrary modified APK. Old sideloaded packages can pose security and compatibility risks.

What the evidence establishes

Question What the available evidence supports
Did BeyondPod disappear from Android Auto? A user report dated August 4, 2018, says it no longer appeared. This is contemporaneous user testimony, not an official Google notice: Reddit report.
Was there a blacklist? BeyondPod 4.2.40 notes refer to Google “un-blacklist[ing]” the app and say visibility would return over several days: archived release notes.
Did BeyondPod have relevant bugs? Its change history lists Android Auto fixes involving focus, menu refresh, microphone interruptions, and video-track behavior: BeyondPod change history.
Did Google confirm its motive publicly? No official Google explanation is established by the sources cited here. A Google Podcasts promotion motive remains unverified.
Did every user regain access? The release note describes gradual reappearance over several days; it does not establish that every device recovered or identify a universal restoration date.
