Microsoft’s president for Windows, Pavan Davuluri, was not reported fired or formally disciplined. The “cancelled” label refers to a concentrated online backlash after he promoted Windows as an “agentic OS” on November 10, 2025. His post drew more than 400 largely negative replies, and replies were later disabled. Davuluri subsequently acknowledged that Microsoft still had “work to do” on Windows usability, reliability, performance and power-user experiences.
What happened to Pavan Davuluri?
Davuluri is Microsoft’s president for Windows, making him a highly visible spokesperson for the platform’s roadmap. The title does not make him Microsoft’s overall president or the sole decision-maker for every Windows policy.
On November 10, 2025, he promoted Microsoft Ignite and described Windows as evolving into an “agentic OS” connecting devices, cloud services and artificial intelligence. The post presented a strategic direction, not proof that every promised capability was already available in Windows.
Coverage published after the post described more than 400 replies, almost all uncomplimentary, followed by the disabling of replies. PiunikaWeb characterized the thread as containing hundreds of insults, memes and demands that Microsoft stop pushing an AI-heavy future. Those descriptions measure one highly visible social-media thread, not the opinion of all Windows users.

The Stack’s follow-up report identified Davuluri as Microsoft’s president for Windows and reproduced the November 10 post. PiunikaWeb’s November 13 report covered the initial backlash.
What does “agentic OS” mean?
In plain English, an agentic operating system would do more than launch applications and respond to direct clicks. It would use AI to interpret a request, connect services, take actions and complete multi-step tasks across devices and cloud systems.
That vision raises practical questions:
- Permissions: What may an agent change, send or purchase without a separate confirmation?
- Privacy: Which activity is processed locally, and which data is sent to cloud services?
- Reliability: How does a user recover when an automated action misunderstands an instruction?
- Control: Can people disable the features, inspect what happened and return to conventional workflows?
- Dependence: What happens when an internet connection, account or cloud service is unavailable?
Davuluri’s wording described Microsoft’s direction. It did not establish that Windows had already become fully autonomous or that every function implied by the phrase had been deployed.
Why did the post trigger such a strong reaction?
The phrase became a focal point for frustrations that had accumulated well beyond one announcement.

AI and Copilot fatigue
Microsoft has promoted Copilot aggressively across Windows and its other products. Some users object to AI being inserted into the operating system without a clear request, especially when entry points are prominent or difficult to remove. Others are interested in AI but want it to be optional, predictable and unobtrusive.
Basic Windows quality complaints
Critics used the thread to revisit complaints about reliability, performance, inconsistent dialogs and interfaces, advertising or promotional distractions, background processes, updates and unwanted features. For these users, an AI-first announcement sounded like a new layer of complexity before longstanding fundamentals had been fixed.
Privacy and cloud concerns
An operating system that coordinates devices, cloud services and AI naturally raises questions about data collection, account requirements and where processing occurs. The coverage supports reporting these as concerns, not declaring that Microsoft is spying on users or that a particular data practice occurred in this incident.
Developer dissatisfaction
Developers also questioned whether Microsoft’s Windows strategy still prioritizes a stable, coherent platform for professional software. The Stack reported an exchange involving developer and technology writer Gergely Orosz, followed by Davuluri’s acknowledgment that Microsoft had work to do. The criticism was about the direction and quality of the platform, not proof that developers as a whole were abandoning Windows.

How intense was the social-media response?
The strongest corroborated figure is more than 400 replies. The Stack described the replies as almost entirely uncomplimentary, while PiunikaWeb used a higher, less precise characterization of nearly 500 insults, memes and demands. Counts can vary as replies are deleted, hidden or counted differently, so “hundreds of predominantly negative replies” is the safest description.
The episode had three distinct characteristics:
- Volume: Hundreds of replies arrived on a post by a senior Windows executive.
- Sentiment: The cited coverage found the thread overwhelmingly negative.
- Limits: X replies are self-selecting and overrepresent people motivated to respond. They are not a scientific survey of Windows users, enterprise buyers or developers.
Some replies reportedly crossed into personal abuse. Harassment should not be treated as equivalent to substantive criticism of Microsoft’s products or strategy.
What did Davuluri say afterward?
According to The Stack, Davuluri said Microsoft had read the comments and had “work to do.” He specifically recognized concerns involving everyday usability, inconsistent dialogs and interface behavior, power-user experiences, reliability, performance and ease of use.
That response matters because it shows the criticism was acknowledged rather than simply ignored. It does not show that Microsoft abandoned its agentic-OS concept, ended Copilot development or reversed its broader AI strategy.

What role did Copilot play?
The timing made the “agentic OS” language sound like a commitment to deeper AI integration. The Stack reported that Microsoft had recently expanded Copilot with features including voice, Copilot Vision and Copilot Actions. It also reported more than 300 Copilot-related sessions at Microsoft Ignite.
Availability can differ by Windows edition, account, region and rollout stage, so those announcements should not be read as a claim that every capability is present for every Windows user. They do explain why many commenters interpreted Davuluri’s post as more than abstract marketing.
Was Pavan Davuluri actually “cancelled”?
| Claim | What the available reporting supports |
|---|---|
| Davuluri faced online backlash | Yes. Hundreds of predominantly negative replies followed his agentic-OS post. |
| Replies were disabled | Yes, according to the cited coverage. |
| Microsoft fired, suspended or removed him | Not established. No cited report documents such an employment action. |
| Microsoft abandoned its AI strategy | Not established. Davuluri acknowledged quality concerns, but the coverage does not show a full retreat. |
| Most Windows users oppose AI features | Not established. A viral X thread cannot measure the entire user base. |
Thus, “cancelled” is accurate only in the loose internet sense of becoming the target of intense criticism. A more precise description is that the Windows chief faced online backlash over Microsoft’s AI direction.

Later reporting said Microsoft emphasized Windows quality and reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points. A 2026 report syndicated by Yahoo described a greater focus on quality and more selective AI integration. The Outpost likewise reported cuts to some Copilot integration.

Those developments support a cautious timeline: Microsoft promoted an AI-heavy Windows vision, users reacted angrily, Davuluri acknowledged usability problems, and the company later talked more about quality and selective integration. The available evidence does not prove that the 2025 backlash alone caused those changes, nor that Copilot was cancelled.
Why this episode matters for Windows
Microsoft wants Windows to become an AI platform linking local devices, cloud services and automated agents. Many users still judge an operating system by older standards: speed, stability, consistency, compatibility and control.
The backlash exposed the trust gap between those goals. Announcing agents before convincing users that ordinary dialogs, updates and performance are dependable invites every existing complaint into the conversation. For Microsoft, the challenge is not merely adding capable AI; it is making the features understandable, optional where appropriate, secure, reversible and worth the trade-offs.
Readers considering an alternative should avoid treating one angry thread as evidence of a mass migration. Some commenters said they had moved to Linux or macOS, but the cited coverage provides no measured migration data. Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora Workstation offer more control but can have compatibility gaps with proprietary Windows software, games and specialized peripherals. Apple’s Mac provides a different desktop ecosystem, with trade-offs in hardware cost, gaming, repairability and Windows-only applications.
