Answer or place the call, then press your phone’s physical Volume Up button while the call is connected. This changes the caller’s voice (call volume), not your music, ringtone, notifications, or alarms. If the earpiece is still quiet, check the audio route, speakerphone, obstructions, software, and hardware in that order.
The quickest fix
- Start or answer a cellular or supported internet call.
- Keep the call connected and press Volume Up repeatedly.
- Watch the on-screen slider. If your phone offers a volume-panel menu, confirm it says Call volume, not Media, Ring, Notification, or Alarm.
- Position the receiver (the narrow earpiece slit) directly over your ear. Tap Speaker to compare the loudspeaker with the earpiece.
Pressing the buttons when no call is active can change media volume instead. Google defines Pixel call volume as the other person’s voice during a call; labels and controls vary by Android brand and version. Google’s Pixel volume guide explains the distinction.
What each Android volume control does

Google Pixel instructions
Change it during a call
With the voice call active, press the side volume button. You can also open Settings > Sound & vibration > Call volume; the exact wording can differ by Pixel generation and Android release. Google’s current instructions describe this slider as the volume of the other person.
Features that may improve clarity
- Adaptive Sound adjusts speaker output to the environment; Google does not describe it as a guaranteed increase beyond the phone’s maximum. Its current support listing covers Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10, including Fold, subject to software requirements.
- Clear Calling is listed for Pixel 7 and later, including Fold. It can improve speech clarity when conditions and bandwidth support it, but it is not available for every call and is not a universal loudness boost.
Samsung Galaxy instructions
Answer or place the call, then press Volume Up. Tap Speaker to compare outputs and inspect the call’s Bluetooth destination. Samsung warns that a covered receiver or blocked air vents can cause low or distorted sound on affected Galaxy designs. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy call-sound troubleshooting for model-specific checks.

Hearing-related options
Open Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements and review options such as Mute all sounds and hearing-device support. Menus differ across One UI versions. Samsung’s hearing-enhancement guide also describes Live Transcribe, which displays spoken words rather than making the caller louder.
Motorola and other Android phones
The broadly standard method is the same: adjust volume with the side buttons while the call is connected. Motorola documents this approach in its call-volume guidance. For a settings path, search Settings for call volume, sound, or hearing enhancements; OnePlus, carrier editions, and other manufacturers use different labels.

If maximum call volume is still too quiet
- Uncover the receiver. Remove anything over the earpiece slit. Test without a thick case or with a screen protector temporarily removed or repositioned.
- Clean gently. Use a dry, soft brush or the manufacturer-approved method. Never insert liquid, pins, needles, or other sharp objects into openings.
- Check routing. During the call, open the audio-output or Bluetooth selector and choose Phone, Speaker, or the intended headset or hearing aid. Disconnect Bluetooth and repeat the call through the phone.
- Compare outputs. Test earpiece, speakerphone, and wired or Bluetooth headphones. If speakerphone is loud but the earpiece is not, receiver blockage or earpiece hardware is more likely than a system-wide volume setting.
- Test another person and method. Try a second caller, another location or carrier contact, and—where relevant—a VoIP call such as WhatsApp or Google Meet. A single quiet caller may have a microphone, handset, network, or app problem.
- Restart and update. Install pending Android and manufacturer updates, turn speakerphone off and on once, and reconnect accessories.
- Check competing software. Temporarily disable or remove recently installed equalizers, call recorders, automation, accessibility, or volume-control apps. If available, test in Safe Mode.
- Reset network settings only for broader connectivity problems. This can remove saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, so use it when calls are also dropping or failing to connect—not as a first response to quiet audio.
- Run built-in diagnostics or contact the manufacturer if the receiver remains quiet, audio is distorted everywhere, controls do not respond, or the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid.
Bluetooth earbuds, cars, and hearing aids
A connected car, watch, earbud, or hearing aid can receive the call instead of the phone’s earpiece. Android provides communication-device routing, but each phone and calling app exposes it differently through its own selector. See the Android AudioManager reference for the underlying routing model.

- During the call, open the audio-output selector and choose the intended device.
- Raise volume with the phone buttons while the call is active.
- Raise the accessory’s independent volume, if it has one; check fit, battery, and companion-app settings.
- Disconnect Bluetooth and retry through the phone before forgetting and re-pairing an accessory.
Compatible hearing aids
On supported Pixels, pairing is under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing devices > Pair new device. Streaming may use Android Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) or Bluetooth Hearing Access Profile (HAP), depending on the exact phone, hearing aid, firmware, and Android version. Google documents the compatibility requirements at Pixel hearing-device support. Compatibility is not universal; an audiologist or authorized hearing provider can verify and fit a device.

Tell volume problems from call-quality problems
Faint, muffled, robotic, or intermittent speech may result from weak cellular signal, Wi-Fi Calling or VoLTE/VoNR behavior, congestion, Bluetooth call-profile problems, noise suppression, bandwidth limits, or the other caller’s microphone. First raise call volume, then compare earpiece, speakerphone, headphones, another calling app, and another location. Clear Calling depends on bandwidth and individual-call availability, so it cannot solve every clarity problem.
When to choose an accessory, repair, or hearing support
- Speakerphone: Usually louder, but less private and more prone to echo.
- Earbuds: Private and potentially clearer, but dependent on fit, battery, Bluetooth routing, and independent volume. Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro call and ambient controls are described at Samsung’s Buds call guide and ambient-sound guide; advanced features vary by Galaxy model and operating system.
- Hearing aids: Appropriate for diagnosed or suspected hearing loss, with phone-specific ASHA/HAP compatibility and professional adjustment.
- Repair or support: Appropriate when one speaker consistently fails, the phone suffered impact or liquid exposure, or physical and routing tests do not restore sound.
Generic “volume booster” apps generally target media, cannot safely bypass the phone’s hardware limit, and may add distortion or intrusive permissions. Try the active-call control and free diagnostics first.
