If a Chrome tab reloads when you return to it, check Memory Saver first: desktop Chrome can deactivate unused tabs to reduce memory use. Open ⋮ → Settings → Performance, then turn Memory Saver off, choose a less aggressive level, or add the affected site to Always keep these sites active. This can prevent memory-saving tab deactivation, but it cannot prevent every reload. Phone users need a different approach because Chrome’s desktop Performance controls are not available on Android or iOS.

First identify what kind of reload you’re seeing

“Auto-refreshing” can describe several different problems. The timing is a useful clue:

  • It reloads after you leave the tab for a while: On desktop, Chrome may have deactivated the tab to save memory. The operating system can also reclaim memory, particularly on a device under pressure.
  • It reloads while you are viewing it: Check for a website-controlled refresh, an extension, a browser crash, or another page problem rather than assuming Memory Saver is responsible.
  • It reloads after you switch apps on a phone: Android or iOS may have removed the page from memory while Chrome was in the background.
  • It reloads after Chrome closes or restarts: A crash, update, or browser restart may be involved.
  • The page changes but keeps your place or work: A web app may have updated its content in the background rather than undergoing a full reload.

A reload can discard unsaved text or other page state. If the page contains work you cannot easily recreate, save it before troubleshooting or leaving it unattended.

Stop inactive tabs from reloading in desktop Chrome

In current desktop Chrome for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebook, Memory Saver is the first setting to check. Google describes it as a feature that deactivates tabs you are not using; when you return to a deactivated tab, Chrome reloads it. See Google’s instructions for personalizing Chrome performance.

  1. In Chrome, select the three-dot menu (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Performance in the sidebar.
  4. Under Memory Saver, switch the feature off if you want to stop this particular cause of tab deactivation.

If the setting is not shown, check that you are using desktop Chrome and that Chrome is up to date. Labels and layout can vary with Chrome version, operating system, and rollout status.

Keep Memory Saver on, but make it less aggressive

If you want to retain some memory savings, leave Memory Saver on and select a less aggressive option. Google currently lists Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum: Moderate makes tabs inactive after a longer period, Balanced is the middle setting, and Maximum makes tabs inactive after a shorter period. Chrome does not publish one universal inactivity timer for these choices; its decisions can depend on conditions such as available memory.

Exclude important sites

In the same Performance settings, add sites under Always keep these sites active. This is often a better compromise than turning Memory Saver off for every tab. Consider sites where a reload could interrupt work, such as webmail with an unsent message, an online document, a financial or government form, a customer-support dashboard, a browser-based development environment, or a long-running upload.

A site exclusion is not a promise that the page can survive a crash, operating-system shutdown, extension action, site navigation, or a reload initiated by the site itself. Chrome’s listed factors that may affect deactivation include pinned tabs and certain active page behaviors, but pinning a tab is not an absolute safeguard.

Check whether Chrome discarded the tab

A discarded tab remains in the tab strip, but its page content has been unloaded; activating it loads the page again. Chrome documents this behavior in its tabs API reference.

  • Notice whether the reload happens mainly after the tab has sat unused, and whether closing other tabs or apps makes it less frequent.
  • For a technical check, enter chrome://discards in Chrome’s address bar. Chrome’s Memory and Energy Saver documentation describes this page as a way to inspect tabs and test discarding. Its controls and labels may change across releases.

Use that page as a diagnostic, not as the everyday fix. Its manual discard controls can unload a page, so do not experiment with a tab that contains unsaved work.

If Memory Saver is off, troubleshoot in this order

1. Rule out extensions

An extension can refresh a page, change navigation, inject scripts, or interfere with a web app. Temporarily disable extensions that manage tabs, reload pages, modify shopping or privacy behavior, block scripts, save sessions, or alter productivity sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open ⋮ → Extensions → Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off extensions temporarily, then test the affected site.
  3. Alternatively, test it in an Incognito window. Extensions are generally disabled there unless you have explicitly allowed them.
  4. If the reload stops, re-enable extensions one at a time until you find the likely trigger.

Google also recommends turning off or removing unnecessary extensions when troubleshooting Chrome performance in its Chrome speed and performance guidance.

2. Look for memory pressure

When the computer is short on memory, Chrome or the operating system may have less ability to keep pages loaded. Close unused tabs and windows, quit memory-heavy applications, pause demanding browser tasks if practical, and restart Chrome. If the problem continues, restart the computer and check for Chrome and operating-system updates. Google’s performance guidance also recommends closing tabs you are not using.

Chrome’s Task Manager can help identify a tab, extension, or browser process using unusually high memory or CPU: open ⋮ → More tools → Task manager, then sort by Memory footprint or CPU. End only a process you recognize as expendable, and save work first: ending a tab process will close or reload that page. The menu path and available labels may vary.

3. Test with a clean profile

Create a temporary Chrome profile from the profile icon and open the affected site without importing extensions or settings. If the page behaves normally there, something in the original profile—such as an extension, setting, cookie, or site data—may be contributing. This is a comparison test, not proof of one specific cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check whether the website is initiating the reload

A site may reload because a session expired, authentication changed, the service deployed an update, live data is being refreshed, a single-page app encountered an error, a service worker updated, or a security check intervened. Compare the affected site in another browser, in Incognito, on another device, and alongside a different page. If only one site is affected across those tests, contact that site’s support team; Chrome settings may not be the cause.

What to do on Android

Google says Chrome’s desktop Performance settings cannot be personalized on Android or iOS in the same way, so the desktop Memory Saver switch is not a reliable mobile fix. On Android, the operating system or a device maker’s battery-management behavior may remove background apps or pages from memory. Settings differ by phone model and Android version, so there is no single menu path to promise.

  • Update Chrome in Google Play and install available Android updates.
  • Check your phone’s battery settings for unusually restrictive background limits on Chrome, if your device offers that control.
  • Avoid aggressive device-cleaner or RAM-booster apps, and reduce the number of open tabs if the phone is under memory pressure.
  • Test whether tabs reload mainly after the phone has been idle or locked. Keep a critical form in the foreground and save text somewhere separate before switching apps.

What to do on iPhone and iPad

iOS manages background app memory and lifecycle behavior; Chrome cannot guarantee that every background page will stay loaded, and its desktop Performance controls are not a direct fix. Update Chrome and iOS, close unnecessary tabs, and save drafts before switching apps if losing the page state would matter. If a particular site repeatedly reloads, compare it in Safari and ask the site’s support team whether it refreshes after inactivity.

A hard reload fixes a different problem

A hard reload bypasses cached resources to address stale or broken page files. It does not stop Chrome from deactivating an inactive tab. With DevTools open, Chrome offers normal reload, hard reload, and Empty Cache and Hard Reload options; the reload-button menu appears when you click and hold or long-press Reload. Chrome documents how to open DevTools and use these reload options at Open Chrome DevTools.

  • Windows/Linux: Ctrl+R for normal reload; Ctrl+Shift+R for hard reload.
  • macOS: Cmd+R for normal reload; Cmd+Shift+R for hard reload.

Clearing cached resources may help a broken page, but it does not prevent memory-based tab unloading. Clearing cookies is a separate step that can sign you out, so it is not a sensible first response to tabs reloading.

Protect work that a reload could erase

  • Use a site’s autosave or draft feature where available, and confirm that the draft has actually saved.
  • For long text, keep a separate copy until it has been submitted or saved successfully.
  • Use Chrome’s keep-active list for desktop sites central to a workflow, while recognizing that it does not protect against every cause of reload.
  • Do not leave a fragile form or unsent message unattended in the background, especially on a phone.
