The Xiaomi 17 Ultra does have a mechanically variable continuous optical telephoto lens, but Xiaomi’s final global specifications give its native range as 75–100mm—not a continuous 3x–7x range. That works out to approximately 3.2x–4.3x relative to the phone’s 23mm-equivalent main camera. Xiaomi separately advertises optical-quality zoom up to 400mm and up to 17.2x optical-level zoom; those longer-reach claims describe the broader telephoto system, not the lens’s continuous mechanical range. US sales, pricing, carrier support and warranty coverage are not established by the available official product information.

Xiaomi’s global product page describes the telephoto camera as a 200MP unit with a 75–100mm mechanically variable optical system using three lens groups. The UK specifications list the 23mm-equivalent main camera and the same telephoto range. Dividing 75mm and 100mm by 23mm gives roughly 3.26x and 4.35x, respectively; rounded, that is about 3.2x–4.3x.
What continuous optical zoom means here
Many phones use separate cameras with fixed focal lengths. When a user chooses a framing between those cameras, the phone may crop an image, process it computationally or combine camera feeds. A mechanically variable lens instead moves internal optical groups as focal length changes. Xiaomi says the 17 Ultra’s three-group mechanism adjusts through its 75–100mm range, allowing framing changes within that span without relying on digital cropping as the only way to change focal length.
That distinction can be useful for portraits and video: the photographer can adjust framing between the camera’s traditional telephoto positions rather than jumping between fixed views. It does not guarantee identical image quality at every setting. Aperture, focus, stabilization, lighting, subject movement and image processing continue to affect results.

How 7x entered the conversation
Before launch, reports described a rumored 200MP periscope camera with continuous optical zoom spanning approximately 3x to 7x. For example, a December 2025 Sina report carried the pre-launch claim, while another early report described a rumored 3x–7x range and 70–160mm-equivalent coverage.
Those reports were rumors, not the final specification. Xiaomi’s published product information now describes a narrower 75–100mm mechanical range. The earlier 7x wording should therefore be treated as an outdated pre-launch claim, rather than a verified description of the released phone.

What the telephoto hardware and zoom labels tell you
The mechanically variable range
The telephoto camera has a 200MP, 1/1.4-inch sensor, optical image stabilization and a variable f/2.39–f/2.96 aperture, according to Xiaomi’s UK specifications. Its stated 75–100mm equivalent focal range is the part Xiaomi identifies as mechanical optical zoom. As the lens moves toward the longer end, the aperture number rises from f/2.39 to f/2.96, meaning the maximum aperture becomes narrower.

Xiaomi’s global page also advertises optical-quality zoom up to 400mm and “up to 17.2x optical-level zoom.” These are broader system-level descriptions. The page does not establish that every intermediate focal length up to 400mm comes from continuous movement of the 75–100mm lens. It is more accurate to keep the categories separate: the stated mechanical range is 75–100mm; the additional 200mm and 400mm positions belong to the phone’s wider telephoto offering; and digital zoom is a further, distinct mode. Xiaomi’s UK specifications list digital zoom up to 120x, a regional specification that should not be confused with optical zoom.

Likewise, a 200MP sensor does not mean every image is saved at 200MP or that every zoom mode preserves that resolution. Xiaomi’s published specifications establish the sensor resolution and advertised zoom modes, not the output resolution or image quality of every capture.
When the variable telephoto lens could help
- Portraits: The 75–100mm span gives room to adjust portrait framing without changing position, and Xiaomi presents this range as portrait-focused. Longer focal lengths can also change how much background appears in the frame, though perspective depends on shooting distance as well as focal length.
- Travel and street photography: A variable telephoto range can help refine a composition when moving closer is inconvenient or impossible.
- Video: A mechanically variable lens may allow smoother framing changes within its native range than switching between separate fixed cameras. Actual transition smoothness and recorded quality are not established by the product specifications.
- Distant subjects: The advertised 200mm and 400mm modes offer tighter framing options, but long-reach photography remains susceptible to hand shake, subject movement and atmospheric haze even with optical stabilization.
Limits to keep in mind
- The confirmed mechanical span is narrower than the rumored 3x–7x range.
- “Optical-quality” and “optical-level” are Xiaomi’s terms for the broader zoom offering; they are not interchangeable with a claim that the lens continuously moves optically across the full range.
- The aperture becomes narrower toward the 100mm end, and low light can make telephoto shooting more challenging.
- OIS can help counter camera movement, but it cannot freeze a moving subject or remove atmospheric haze.
- Xiaomi’s official pages provide hardware details and manufacturer claims, not independent tests of sharpness at each focal length, autofocus, low-light performance or video transitions.
- A large telephoto camera can bring trade-offs in phone size, weight and cost, but the cited product specifications do not quantify those trade-offs here.
What US buyers can verify
The available Xiaomi product information is regional, including global and UK pages; it does not confirm an official US purchase route, US price, supported US carrier bands, local warranty or repair service. Do not infer those details from another region’s listing. Anyone considering an imported phone should verify the exact model variant, network compatibility, seller authorization, return terms and warranty coverage with the seller and relevant carrier before buying.

Xiaomi also says its Photography Kit Pro is sold separately on the global product page. It is an accessory, not a requirement for using the phone’s zoom, and US availability or compatibility is not established by that page.
