For most US buyers spending up to $300 before tax and shipping, the Samsung HW-B750D or HW-B750F is the strongest all-around value if you want a subwoofer and fuller movie sound. Choose the Vizio SV510X-0806 instead if you can place rear speakers and want more physical surround. For a simpler setup, the Samsung HW-S60D is the best standalone pick in this shortlist; the compact Bose TV Speaker suits smaller rooms and dialogue-focused listening. The Sony HT-S2000 is worth considering only when its current price is below $300.

These recommendations are for the US market and are based on available testing and buying-guide coverage checked August 16, 2026. Prices and stock change; count the complete soundbar package, including its included subwoofer or rear speakers, toward the budget.

Quick picks: which soundbar fits your setup?

Model Best for Configuration and included speakers Atmos Price status Main trade-off
Samsung HW-B750D / HW-B750F Best overall value 5.1; wireless subwoofer included No Compare the two versions; confirm the exact US package and current price No height effects or Atmos support
Vizio SV510X-0806 Most immersive surround package 5.1; subwoofer and rear satellites included Playback support; no dedicated up-firing drivers Check current availability and package contents Needs rear-speaker placement; bass may sound boomy
Samsung HW-S60D Best standalone bar 5.0; no subwoofer Processes Atmos but downmixes it to stereo Listed among under-$300 picks; verify current price Less bass and physical surround than a speaker package
Bose TV Speaker Best compact, simple upgrade 2.0; no subwoofer Not the reason to buy it Listed among under-$300 picks; verify current price Limited bass and surround
Sony HT-S100F Best basic low-cost upgrade Standalone 2.0; no subwoofer No Often considered in the cheap-soundbar category; check live price Basic sound and no cinematic bass
Sony HT-S2000 Atmos-capable bar on sale 3.1; no bundled subwoofer Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support Sale-dependent; buy for this budget only below $300 No Wi-Fi streaming or included subwoofer
Roku Streambar SE / Streambar Pro Sound upgrade plus Roku streaming Compact standalone bar; no subwoofer No Check model availability and current price Not a choice for strong bass or Atmos

The shortlist reflects different goals, not a single lab ranking. RTINGS currently names the HW-B750D its top tested pick under $300, the Vizio its leading option with rear satellites, and the HW-S60D and Bose TV Speaker as standalone and small-bar picks. TechRadar favors the HT-S2000 for its sound and Atmos processing when discounted, while Tom’s Guide emphasizes the lower-cost Sony HT-S100F. Those differences reflect what each guide prioritizes: a subwoofer package, physical surround, Atmos, or a simple inexpensive upgrade. See RTINGS’ under-$300 recommendations, TechRadar’s cheap-soundbar guide, and Tom’s Guide’s cheap-soundbar picks.

Best overall value: Samsung HW-B750D or HW-B750F

Choose whichever version is cheaper and easier to find as a complete new US package. Both are 5.1-channel systems with a wireless subwoofer, so they are a practical match for films, sports, games, and music when bass impact matters more than overhead effects. RTINGS describes the newer B750F as nearly identical to the B750D and recommends comparing their prices.

This is not an Atmos bar: it has no up-firing drivers and does not support Dolby Atmos. The Vizio is a better fit if distinct rear-speaker effects matter more than a straightforward subwoofer-equipped setup. Before ordering, confirm whether the listing is for the D or F suffix, that the subwoofer is included, and whether the condition is new rather than refurbished or open-box. Samsung’s US soundbar listings and HW-B750F product search are useful starting points; the precise model suffix and package still need to match the item being sold.

Best surround package: Vizio SV510X-0806

The Vizio combines a subwoofer with dedicated rear satellites, making it the clearest choice here for buyers who can put speakers behind or beside their seats. Separate rear speakers can create a more enveloping surround field than virtual processing from a bar at the front of the room. RTINGS reports clear dialogue from its dedicated center channel, but also notes that its bass can be overactive or boomy depending on the room and settings.

Atmos playback support does not mean this system has dedicated height speakers: it has no up-firing drivers. If surround is your priority, the physical rear speakers matter more than the Atmos label. Plan for extra hardware and power outlets, and check the model manual for the exact connections, control options, and setup procedure. The system is a poor fit if you cannot place the satellites or want a particularly restrained bass response. Vizio’s soundbar page is the manufacturer starting point; verify the exact SV510X-0806 listing and box contents before purchase.

Best standalone soundbar: Samsung HW-S60D

The HW-S60D is a 5.0-channel all-in-one bar with no bundled subwoofer. It is a sensible middle ground for someone who wants more than a basic two-channel bar but does not want another box on the floor. RTINGS highlights its balanced presentation, SpaceFit Sound room correction, Alexa support, sound presets, and seven-band EQ. Samsung lists the model on its US product page.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

The bar can process Atmos content, but its 5.0 standalone design downmixes that content to stereo; do not buy it expecting discrete Atmos channels or a subwoofer’s deep bass. Its strengths are a simpler footprint, adjustment options, and everyday TV listening. If you mainly want speech intelligibility in a small room and few controls, the Bose is simpler; if movie bass is a priority, choose a package with a subwoofer.

Best compact, dialogue-focused choice: Bose TV Speaker

At less than 24 inches wide, the 2.0-channel Bose TV Speaker suits a bedroom, small TV stand, desk, or other space where a subwoofer and rear satellites would be awkward. RTINGS names it a leading small soundbar under $300. It offers bass adjustment, but its compact enclosure cannot deliver the low-bass impact of a dedicated subwoofer, and it does not provide the surround performance of the 5.0 and 5.1 systems here. See the Bose TV Speaker product page.

Pick it for a straightforward speech-and-volume improvement rather than a home-theater setup. The Samsung HW-S60D is the better standalone alternative if you want more sound adjustment and room correction; the Bose is the more compact, uncomplicated option.

Best basic low-cost upgrade: Sony HT-S100F

The HT-S100F is a simple standalone bar for viewers who chiefly want TV audio to be clearer or louder without buying a subwoofer system. Tom’s Guide names it its best cheap soundbar, and lists HDMI, Bluetooth, and USB among its inputs. It is not an Atmos or home-theater package, so it is best suited to a modest setup where low price and simplicity outweigh cinematic bass. Check Sony’s HT-S100F product page for model-specific details.

Best Atmos pick only when on sale: Sony HT-S2000

The HT-S2000 is a 3.1-channel bar supporting Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. TechRadar rates it highly among cheap bars for sound and Atmos processing, but its price signal is sale-dependent: it may drop below $300, while the guide also gives a higher value reference. Treat it as an under-$300 choice only when the actual US checkout price is within your ceiling—not as a consistently sub-$300 model.

It has no bundled subwoofer and no Wi-Fi streaming, so it is less appealing if you want strong bass immediately or a connected multiroom music system. TechRadar lists HDMI ARC, optical, and Bluetooth connections. Its Sony product page is the official starting point. For a buyer who values bass or physical rear surround more than Atmos processing, the Samsung package or Vizio system may be a better use of the same budget.

Best if you also need streaming: Roku Streambar SE or Streambar Pro

The Streambar combines a compact soundbar with Roku streaming, which can make sense if you also need a streaming device or want to replace a limited smart-TV interface. RTINGS describes the Streambar SE as cheaper than the Bose TV Speaker but not as loud or as well built. Tom’s Guide describes the Streambar Pro as including a 4K Roku streaming player, virtual surround, HDMI ARC, optical, and USB. These are distinct models, so confirm which one is being sold and what it includes. Neither supports Atmos, and neither is the pick for a subwoofer-driven movie setup. See Roku’s Streambar page.

How to choose the right type of soundbar

Standalone bar: less clutter, less bass

A standalone bar fits small rooms, apartments, speech-focused viewing, and TV stands without space for a subwoofer. It reduces setup and cable clutter, but generally cannot match a subwoofer package for low bass or a system with separate rear speakers for physical surround.

ULTIMEA Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer, App Control, for Home Theater
  • Wireless Subwoofer, Place It Anywhere: The wireless subwoofer connects to the soundbar without audio cables, giving you the freedom to place it anywhere in your room for flexible setup.
  • Mica-Reinforced Drivers for Greater Accuracy: Mica-reinforced diaphragms increase driver rigidity by up to 30%, helping suppress cone breakup and unwanted resonance. The enhanced stability helps reduce distortion by up to 20%, delivering cleaner, more accurate sound with improved clarity and detail.
  • VoiceMX Technology for Clear Dialogue: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. By dynamically boosting the 120 Hz–6 kHz vocal range with adaptive EQ and gain control, dialogue stays clear and easy to follow in any scene.
  • BassMX Deep Bass Technology: With an 18 mm high-excursion driver, 6.5 L tuned cabinet, and high-density magnetic circuit, the wireless subwoofer produces strong low-frequency output. BassMX optimizes 45–150 Hz bass for deeper, tighter, and more realistic sound at any volume.
  • 240W Peak Output with 2.1 Channel System: Featuring a precision-tuned soundbar and a dedicated wireless subwoofer, the system delivers up to 240W of peak power for room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB, it reproduces clear dialogue, detailed mids, and impactful bass for movies, music, and gaming.

Bar with subwoofer: more impact without rear-speaker setup

A subwoofer-equipped package is better for action films, games, sports, and music with substantial bass. It takes floor space and needs a power outlet even when its audio connection to the bar is wireless. In a small room, the bass can become boomy; lower its level, try night mode, or move it away from a corner.

Bar, subwoofer, and rear speakers: strongest physical surround

Choose this layout if you can place satellites beside or behind the seating position and want the most enveloping setup in this budget. It requires more positioning and power, and some rear speakers connect to a wireless receiver or subwoofer rather than directly to the bar. “Wireless” usually describes the audio link, not battery operation. Follow the exact model manual rather than assuming components from different packages will pair.

What Dolby Atmos means under $300

Atmos support means a soundbar can decode or process Atmos content; it does not by itself guarantee sound from overhead. Convincing height effects depend on speaker design, processing, room reflections, ceiling geometry, placement, and whether the TV and source actually deliver Atmos. Up-firing drivers and a suitable ceiling can help, but many inexpensive products use virtual processing instead. The Samsung HW-S60D processes Atmos but downmixes it to stereo, while the Vizio supports Atmos playback without dedicated up-firing drivers. For more tangible immersion, a real rear-speaker package can be a stronger choice than an Atmos badge on a one-piece bar. TechRadar likewise cautions that Atmos should be treated as optional at this price because convincing positional effects depend on appropriate speakers and processing; see its guide.

Dialogue clarity: what helps, and what can get in the way

A dedicated center channel can help anchor speech, while voice-enhancement modes may make it easier to follow dialogue at lower volume. Those modes can also make voices sound thin. Night mode reduces dynamic range and bass, which may help in an apartment, but changes how films sound. The HW-S60D’s room correction and EQ make it a flexible standalone option; the Bose offers a simpler compact alternative.

Amazon Fire TV Soundbar, 2.0 speaker with DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio, Bluetooth connectivity
  • Amp up your audio - Fire TV Soundbar enhances TV audio with dual speakers for fuller sound, clearer dialogue, and deeper bass—all in a compact design.
  • Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
  • Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.
  • Compact design - With a length of 24“ and a height of just 2.5", Fire TV Soundbar fits most entertainment consoles and TV stands.
  • Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.

If speech remains difficult to hear, check the TV’s audio mode, the bar’s speech setting, and the balance between bass and voices. A subwoofer set too high can mask dialogue. Cabinet placement, room reflections, TV processing, and the streaming source’s mix or compression can also affect intelligibility. Try a standard or speech-oriented mode rather than an exaggerated surround preset, and disable TV sound processing if the TV and soundbar appear to be processing the signal twice.

Check your TV connections before buying

  • HDMI ARC: Usually the most convenient connection for TV audio on a budget. It can carry sound to the bar and, with HDMI-CEC enabled, let the TV remote control volume.
  • HDMI eARC: Offers more bandwidth for higher-quality formats and demanding Atmos signals when both TV and soundbar support them. Check both devices rather than assuming an ARC port is eARC.
  • Optical: A broadly useful fallback, but it has lower format limits and generally lacks HDMI-CEC convenience.
  • Bluetooth: Useful for casual music playback, but not the preferred primary TV connection.
  • HDMI input or pass-through: Relevant if you plan to connect a console, disc player, or streaming box through the soundbar. Confirm the exact video formats and refresh rates supported before routing a device through it.

Before purchase, check that the TV has an ARC or eARC port, that the bar has the inputs you need, and that your source and streaming app output the format you expect. If ARC produces no sound, use this troubleshooting order:

  1. Connect the cable to the TV’s port specifically marked ARC or eARC and the corresponding soundbar port.
  2. Set the TV’s sound output to HDMI ARC/eARC or external speakers.
  3. Enable HDMI-CEC. Brand names differ; examples include Anynet+, Bravia Sync, Simplink, and Vizio CEC.
  4. Power-cycle the TV and soundbar, then check the connection again.
  5. Set source audio to Auto, Bitstream, or Pass-Through rather than PCM if those options are supported by the devices.
  6. Try optical as a compatibility fallback if HDMI audio still fails.

TV menu names vary by brand and model, so use the manual for your particular television. Do not route a current-generation console through a soundbar unless its pass-through specifications explicitly cover the video features you need, such as high refresh rates, VRR, HDR formats, or Dolby Vision. Connecting the console to the TV and returning audio to the bar over ARC/eARC is often the safer arrangement, subject to your TV’s capabilities.

Fit, room size, music, and gaming

Measure the TV stand, not only the TV width

Measure the shelf width and height, including the clearance between the TV feet. The bar must not block the screen, the TV’s infrared sensor, or the remote’s line of sight. For TVs below about 42 inches, soundbar width deserves particular attention. A compact model suits a bedroom or small set; a subwoofer package is generally a better match for a larger room or listeners seated farther from the screen. Rear speakers need a usable position at the sides or behind the seating area. TechRadar also flags size, features, and connectivity as core buying considerations in its soundbar guide.

Do not assume a TV soundbar is a smart music speaker

Bluetooth is common, but Wi-Fi is what enables multiroom features and more convenient network streaming on supported models. The HT-S2000 has no Wi-Fi streaming and cannot join a multiroom speaker system, according to TechRadar. Roku models add streaming-platform functionality, but that does not make them the best music-focused speakers. TV performance alone is not a reliable measure of how satisfying a bar will be for stereo music.

Keep gaming video features intact

Soundbar HDMI pass-through can be a bottleneck if it does not support the console’s or TV’s required video features. Unless the exact soundbar specifications confirm compatibility, connect the console directly to the TV and send audio back through ARC/eARC. Bluetooth should not be the primary gaming connection when low latency matters.

Setup checklist for better TV sound

  1. Use HDMI ARC/eARC when both the TV and bar support it; select external-speaker output and enable CEC on the TV.
  2. Place the bar below the TV with its front unobstructed and its controls or sensors accessible.
  3. Put the subwoofer near the front of the room, then adjust its level to suit the space rather than assuming more bass is better.
  4. Place included rear speakers beside or behind the seating position, following the product manual for pairing and connections.
  5. Start with a standard sound mode; add dialogue enhancement only as much as needed.
  6. Check the TV, source device, and streaming app audio settings if Atmos or another format is not appearing as expected.
  7. Test with familiar dialogue, music, and a movie scene, then adjust speech, bass, and surround settings to taste.

Should you buy refurbished or open-box?

A refurbished or open-box listing can appear to bring a higher-tier system under the budget, but it is not the same purchase as a new model at that price. Check who refurbished or sells it, whether the subwoofer and every satellite are included, what warranty applies, and the return policy. A mixed-generation or incomplete package can complicate wireless pairing. If the all-in price of a suitable new package exceeds $300, compare a complete model that meets the budget instead of treating an unverified listing as an equivalent deal.
