If PhotoRoom leaves the old background, exports a white rectangle, or produces a soft cutout, the cause may be the source photo, a layer setting, the file format, resolution, or platform—not necessarily a software glitch. If the result looks wrong in the editor, check the layers first. If it looks right there but wrong after download, check the export format.
Use the symptom table to find the fastest place to start, then work through the five fixes in order.

1. Use a cleaner, higher-contrast original
Automatic removal has less visual information to work with when the subject blends into its surroundings. White products on white, dark objects on dark surfaces, reflective items, and subjects obscured by clutter can all make a clean edge harder to produce. Fine hair, fur, lace, mesh, foliage, glass, smoke, translucent plastic, thin wires, and overlapping objects are especially challenging for image cutouts generally; that does not by itself show that PhotoRoom is malfunctioning.

- Start from the highest-resolution original you have, not a compressed screenshot or downloaded thumbnail.
- Make the subject large enough in the frame and keep its full outline visible.
- Choose a background that contrasts with the subject; for product photos, a plain contrasting surface can help.
- Use even lighting where possible, and crop out unrelated clutter if the subject is small.
- Re-upload the improved original rather than repeatedly enlarging or editing a poor cutout.
PhotoRoom says it does not upscale imported images: increasing the design size cannot restore detail that is absent from the source. See its guidance on blurry or pixelated images.

Check the edge against another color
A cutout can look acceptable against one background but reveal missing fragments or a halo against another. Temporarily place a bright color behind a dark subject, or a dark color behind a pale one, and inspect the outline at 100% zoom. This is a diagnostic check, not a PhotoRoom requirement. A colored fringe may be background spill captured in the original photo rather than a new export problem.
2. Re-run removal and check which layer is selected
PhotoRoom separates the foreground and background in its editing workflow. The old scene may still be visible as its own background layer even when the subject has been cut out correctly. A replacement image or color, a duplicate original photo, or a foreground restored to the full photo can also make removal appear to have failed.
Use Background Remover on the Web App
- Log in at app.photoroom.com and select the Space you want to use.
- Select AI Tools, then Background Remover.
- Upload the photo and let PhotoRoom remove its background automatically.
- Edit the result if needed, then select Download, choose a filename and format, and download the image.

Check removal in an existing Web App design
- Open the design and select its foreground layer.
- Find Remove background in the side panel and turn it on.
- If you turn it off, PhotoRoom restores the original photo on that foreground layer; turn it back on to remove that background again.
- Inspect the background layer separately. If it contains the old scene, use its Erase control if appropriate.
Before deleting or erasing anything, preserve a copy of the design so you can recover the original. PhotoRoom documents the foreground toggle and background-layer controls in its guide to restoring or removing the original background and guide to removing a background from an existing design.

- Is the foreground layer selected, and is Remove background on?
- Is the old scene still on a separate layer underneath?
- Is a solid color or replacement image covering transparency?
- Are there duplicate copies of the original photo in the design?
3. Export as PNG when you need transparency
A successful cutout can still look like it has a background if the downloaded format cannot store transparency. PNG supports transparent pixels; JPEG/JPG does not, so a JPEG export must show a solid color in their place. WebP can preserve transparency, but its compatibility depends on the app, device, or marketplace where you use it. PhotoRoom’s format documentation also distinguishes formats by platform; see its format and transparency explanation.
Choose PNG for one Web App download
- Open the design and select Download.
- Enter a filename and choose
.pngas the format. - Download the file and open it in an app that visibly indicates transparency, or place it over a colored background to check.
A white-looking preview is not conclusive: the editor, a viewer, or a receiving service may display transparent pixels as white. A white layer in the design or a JPEG export can also produce a genuinely solid white background.
Set a default export format on mobile

See PhotoRoom’s export-format settings. For maximum transparency compatibility, use PNG when the destination accepts it.

4. Fix blur, jagged edges, or pixelation
First distinguish a poor mask from a small or soft image. PhotoRoom identifies low-resolution imports, a design stretched beyond its intended size, and blur effects on a layer or background as causes of blurry or pixelated results. Since imported images are not upscaled, a larger canvas does not create detail in the subject.
Check the source, design, and effects
- Use the original full-resolution photo rather than a small copy.
- Check whether the design is being enlarged beyond its actual pixel dimensions.
- Inspect the foreground and background for an applied blur effect.
- View the edge at 100% zoom before judging it; enlargement can make a small image look jagged.
- Compare the edge on more than one background. Soft antialiasing can be normal, while a visible fringe may come from the original image.
PhotoRoom’s higher-resolution export guidance recommends resizing the design, choosing PNG for export, avoiding low-resolution source images, and checking whether Batch Mode is limiting output.
Know the documented export ceilings
PhotoRoom’s Help Center lists the following maximum export dimensions, checked August 16, 2026. These are platform- and plan-dependent limits, not a promise that every source image will contain that much detail.

These figures come from PhotoRoom’s export-resolution limits; the API figure is specific to that documented API output. Limits can change. A large design cannot compensate for a low-resolution subject photo.

5. Change the file or platform if processing fails
If an image will not upload or finish processing, first test whether the issue follows that file or affects everything. Supported input formats differ across PhotoRoom’s consumer platforms, so an image that opens on a phone may not be supported in the Web App.
Consumer-app format differences
- iOS: JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF are listed as supported imports; other formats may work but are not officially supported.
- Android: JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF are supported, subject to Android-version qualifications.
- Web App: JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF are listed as supported imports; HEIC/HEIF is not supported.
For exports, JPEG and PNG are broadly available; WebP is listed for Android and the Web App, not iOS. AVIF export is listed for the Web App and depends on browser support: PhotoRoom lists compatible Chromium-based browsers including Chrome, Edge, Opera, Arc, Dia, and Brave, while Firefox and Safari users may not see the option. Check the current supported-format table if your platform or browser differs.
Retry in a controlled order
- Keep an untouched copy of the original.
- If the format is unsupported or suspected to be problematic, make a PNG or JPEG copy and upload that version.
- If the file is unusually large, reduce its dimensions or compress it while preserving as much quality as possible.
- If the mobile app fails, try the same supported image in the Web App; if the Web App fails, try a supported browser.
- Reopen the design and try exporting again.
- If one file consistently fails but others work, investigate that file or its image content. If all files fail across supported platforms, app, browser, account, network, or service issues become more plausible.
- Restart the app or browser, check the connection, and retry. These are general recovery steps rather than PhotoRoom-documented fixes for a specific error.
- Contact PhotoRoom support if the problem can be reproduced with supported files and platforms.
Do not apply API limits to the consumer app
For developers using PhotoRoom’s Remove Background API, the documentation lists PNG, JPEG, WebP, and HEIC inputs; PNG, JPEG, and WebP outputs; a 50 MB maximum file size; and a maximum 6,000-pixel widest side. PhotoRoom recommends keeping images to 25 megapixels or less. Larger images can take longer and may need a longer client timeout. Those are API-specific limits, not verified consumer-app limits. See the Remove Background API format and size requirements.

When should you use another editor?
Try the source-image, layer, format, and resolution checks before paying for another service or changing tools. An upgrade is relevant when you actually need higher-resolution exports, batch work, commercial use, or advanced features; a subscription is not a guaranteed fix for difficult segmentation. PhotoRoom’s plan terms and limitations are subject to change, so check its current plan details before relying on a specific allowance or use condition.
For a cutout with complex hair, glass, lace, smoke, or overlapping shapes, a manual editor such as Photoshop may be more suitable if you need pixel-level mask control. That added control comes with a more involved workflow; it is not a guarantee of a faster result. A dedicated background-removal service, a mobile-first alternative such as Pixelcut, or a broader design tool such as Canva may suit a different workflow. PhotoRoom describes the distinction between its broader editor and Remove.bg’s removal focus, and between its product-photo workflow and Canva’s general design platform, in its own Remove.bg comparison and Canva comparison; treat those as vendor positioning, not independent accuracy tests.
If the immediate problem is only that a transparent cutout downloaded with a solid background, changing the export to PNG is a more direct remedy than switching tools or upgrading.
