Yes. Google Drive for desktop can connect up to four Google accounts on one Windows PC, so you can access each account through File Explorer without installing separate clients. The accounts stay separate: adding them does not pool storage or copy files between them. Start with Stream files if you want to limit disk use, then mark only the files you need for offline work.
What “sync multiple accounts” means
Drive for desktop lets you use several Google accounts from one Windows installation. Each account keeps its own files, permissions, trash, and storage allowance; the app does not merge them into one Drive or automatically synchronize a folder from one account into another.
Google’s current instructions support up to four accounts at once. You can browse Drive content through File Explorer, but the exact labels and drive-letter presentation can vary by application version and setup. Confirm the account before editing, moving, or deleting files. Google’s instructions for using Drive for desktop describe adding accounts and the account limit.
Check Windows and account requirements
- Windows: Google lists 64-bit Windows 10 and later as supported. Drive for desktop does not support 32-bit Windows. Google’s system requirements also cover supported components and storage limitations.
- WebView2: Drive for desktop requires Microsoft WebView2. Google says it is included on most Windows 10 devices; the installer can download it if it is missing. If an organization-managed PC blocks its installation, ask the administrator.
- Work or school account: A Google Workspace administrator may restrict desktop access, offline use, or shared-drive behavior. Personal accounts are generally more straightforward, but organizational policies take precedence.
- Storage: Check available disk space before choosing mirroring. Google does not support network volumes such as SMB or NFS for the Drive for desktop content cache.
Use Google’s official Drive for desktop download page. Google’s current desktop client replaces older Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream instructions; do not install multiple copies of those discontinued clients. See Google’s overview of Drive for desktop.

Install Drive for desktop and add accounts
- In Windows, open Settings > System > About and confirm that the device is running 64-bit Windows 10.
- Download Drive for desktop from Google’s official download page, run the installer, and follow its prompts. Sign in to the first account when asked.
- In the Windows notification area at the bottom-right of the taskbar, select the Google Drive icon. If it is hidden, open the notification-area overflow menu.
- In the Drive panel, select the profile picture or account icon, then choose + Add account.
- Complete the browser-based Google sign-in. When prompted, restart Drive for desktop.
- Repeat the add-account steps for any remaining accounts, up to Google’s four-account limit.
If you cannot find + Add account, open the tray menu rather than the File Explorer location, check whether the four-account limit has been reached, and update or restart Drive for desktop. An organization policy can also prevent a work or school account from connecting.
Find the accounts in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer.
- Select the Google Drive location in the navigation pane.
- Browse the available account-specific Drive content and verify which account you are using before making changes.
Do not assume that files with the same name belong to the same account. When ownership or location is unclear, check the account in Drive for desktop or confirm the file on the Drive website. Google confirms that Drive for desktop provides access to Drive files and folders through File Explorer on Windows, but exact folder names and drive letters are not guaranteed across configurations.

Choose streaming or mirroring
Drive for desktop offers two ways to handle My Drive files. The choice affects local storage and offline access; it does not combine accounts. Google explains the modes and switching behavior in its streaming and mirroring guide.
Recommended Free Tools
| Mode | Where files are kept | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stream files | Primarily in Google’s cloud; the streaming location is a virtual drive. | Large Drives, limited SSD space, or regular internet access. | For offline use, you must mark selected files or folders available offline. Disconnecting a streaming account removes that account’s offline files from the computer. |
| Mirror files | A local copy of My Drive is kept on the PC as well as in Google Drive. | Smaller Drives that fit locally, or frequent work without internet. | Uses local storage. Changes and deletions can sync to the cloud, so mirroring is not an independent backup. |
For most people setting up several accounts, streaming is the safer starting point because it avoids downloading every account’s entire My Drive immediately. Mirror only when there is room for the files and you need a full local copy. Drive for desktop’s exact per-account syncing controls can vary by version and account type; check the account selector and Preferences screen rather than assuming each account can be mirrored independently to a separately chosen folder.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Set the mode
- Open the Google Drive system-tray panel.
- Select Settings > Preferences.
- Open Folders from Drive.
- Under My Drive syncing options, choose Stream files or Mirror files.
Switching to mirroring downloads My Drive files to the selected local folder. During a switch, files already on the computer may be compared with cloud copies; differing versions can be retained separately. Files that are not yet in the cloud may be uploaded. Let syncing finish before moving or deleting folders, and quit Drive for desktop before removing a previous mirrored folder on Windows.
Make streamed files available offline
- In File Explorer, open the Google Drive location and find the file or folder you need.
- Right-click it and choose the Drive for desktop option to make it available offline, if shown. The wording can vary by app version.
- Wait for the item’s status to show that syncing or offline preparation has completed.
- If the file is important for travel or a poor-connection situation, test access with the internet disconnected before you rely on it.
Being visible in File Explorer does not necessarily mean a streamed file is stored locally. Google warns that disconnecting a streaming account removes that account’s offline files from the computer. Reconnect the account and allow Drive to rebuild local availability; do not delete cloud files as a troubleshooting step.

Share or move files between accounts
Adding two accounts to Drive for desktop grants access to both; it does not transfer or replicate files. Choose the action that matches what you need:
- Collaborate without moving ownership: Share a file or folder with the other account and set the appropriate permissions. The original remains in its account.
- Create a copy in the other account: Copy deliberately, or download and upload if needed. This creates separate content and may use storage in the destination account.
- Change ownership: Use Drive’s ownership-transfer options only where available. Account type, organizational policy, and file type can affect whether transfer is allowed.
- Move a permanent collection: Plan the transfer through Drive on the web or another supported route, then verify the destination and permissions. Do not assume dragging between account locations always means a clean copy; it may move, copy, or fail depending on location and access.
Each account keeps its own quota. Google says consumer accounts include up to 15 GB, while Google One plans can increase storage shared across that account’s Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Storage is not automatically pooled simply because several accounts are connected. See Google One plans for current account storage options.

Troubleshoot common problems
The second account does not appear
- Finish the restart requested after browser sign-in.
- Open the profile menu in the Drive for desktop tray panel and confirm the account is listed.
- Check that Drive for desktop is not paused and that its status panel does not show a sync error.
- If it is a work or school account, ask the organization administrator whether desktop access is allowed.
Sign-in loops or work accounts are blocked
Check for organization restrictions on Drive for desktop, browser sign-in, or WebView2. Google advises work or school users who cannot install WebView2 to contact their administrator; do not try to bypass organizational controls. Google’s Workspace administrator guidance covers organizational setup.
The computer runs low on disk space
- Review whether mirroring is enabled and how much local space the files require.
- Use streaming for content that does not need to stay fully local, and mark only essential files offline.
- Do not manually move a mirrored folder while Drive is running. Before changing modes or relocating data, let syncing complete and follow Google’s instructions.
Duplicate or conflicting files appear
Conflicts can follow offline edits to the same file, differences between existing local and cloud copies during a mode change, manual moves between account locations, or another sync application touching the same folder. Google notes that during a switch to mirroring, differing local and cloud versions may both be kept. Review both copies before removing either one.
Another cloud service syncs the same folder
Avoid having Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or another sync client control the same physical folder. Separate each service’s active root directory; do not nest one provider’s live sync folder inside another’s. Overlapping sync engines can cause duplicates, locking issues, conflicts, and confusing deletion behavior.

Google does not support SMB or NFS network volumes for the Drive for desktop content cache. Do not rely on a NAS or mapped network drive as the cache location.
Quick Recap
When a different setup is better
- Occasional access only: Use separate browser profiles instead of syncing content to the PC.
- Team files and organization ownership: A Workspace shared drive may be more appropriate than keeping files in one employee’s My Drive; administrator policy still applies.
- Independent recovery: Add a separate backup strategy for important files. A synced or mirrored deletion can propagate, so a local mirror is not an immutable backup.
- One account needs more space: Consider more storage for that account rather than expecting several accounts’ quotas to combine. Personal Google One upgrades and Workspace business plans serve different needs.
- A unified workspace across unrelated cloud services: A dedicated multi-cloud manager may help, but it adds another provider, permissions, and potential cost. It is not required just to access multiple Google accounts in Windows.
