Windows 11 can add an End task command to an app’s taskbar menu. Turn on the setting, then right-click a running app’s taskbar icon and choose End task to terminate it without opening Task Manager. The build number 23466 belongs to the feature’s old Insider-era development; current users should follow the path for their installed Windows release.
What End task does
End task force-terminates the selected application from Windows. It is different from choosing File > Exit, clicking a window’s X, or using Alt + F4, all of which give the application a chance to close normally.
- Use a normal close first when the app responds.
- Use End task when an app is frozen, not responding, stuck in the background, or refusing to close.
- Unsaved work can be lost because the app may not receive an opportunity to save.
The command is enabled in Settings, but it is used from the context menu of a running app’s taskbar icon. It is not a general replacement for Task Manager, and helper or child processes may remain active.

Enable End task in Windows 11
Windows 11 version 25H2 and later
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System, then Advanced.
- Scroll to the For developers section.
- Turn on End task.
Microsoft’s current documentation places the former For developers controls under Advanced in Windows 11 25H2: Advanced Windows Settings.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Windows 11 24H2, 23H2, and earlier supported releases
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > For developers.
- Find the taskbar-related End task setting and switch it on.
Older Insider instructions may show Privacy & security > For developers. That was an earlier location; later stable guidance moved the page to System. On some older installations, use Windows Search for For developers or End task if the page is difficult to find.
Close a running app from its taskbar icon
- Start the application, or verify that it is already running.
- Right-click the application’s icon on the taskbar. Do not right-click an empty taskbar area, Start, or a notification-area icon.
- Select End task.
- Wait for the taskbar entry to disappear or refresh, then reopen the app if necessary.
The command may not appear for a pinned shortcut that is not currently running. Labels and placement can also vary by Windows version, language, app type, and rollout.

Does End task require Developer Mode?
No. On later supported Windows 11 builds, enable only the End task switch; do not turn on the separate Developer Mode setting unless you need developer-specific features. Microsoft removed that prerequisite in later Insider builds, as described in its Build 23521 announcement. Microsoft also notes that everyday activities such as browsing, gaming, email, and Office work generally do not require Developer Mode: Developer Mode documentation.

Check your Windows release
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Use System > Advanced > For developers on 25H2 and newer, or System > For developers on earlier releases. Availability depends on installed updates, rollout state, and edition or policy; it is not guaranteed on every Windows 11 installation. Microsoft’s current location and policy notes are in Advanced Windows Settings.

The device is managed
Work, school, and enterprise PCs can use Group Policy or mobile-device management to hide or disable advanced settings. Contact the administrator rather than changing policy or the registry yourself.
The app is not running
End task normally appears for a running application represented on the taskbar, not an unused pinned shortcut. Right-click the app’s actual icon after launching it.

- Sign out and sign back in, or restart the PC.
- Install pending Windows updates.
Build 23466 and the feature’s history
Build 23466 is a historical Dev Channel reference, not a Windows version most users need to install. Microsoft introduced the setting in Insider Build 23430, where it initially had functionality problems, then reported working taskbar termination in Build 23451: Build 23430 and Build 23451. It was refined through later Insider releases and incorporated into stable Windows 11 updates, including the documented Release Preview rollout: Microsoft’s Windows 11 developer update and the 2024 Release Preview announcement.

Historical builds had bugs involving multiple windows or, in some cases, unrelated applications; later releases addressed those issues. Microsoft also changed later behavior so a Not Responding confirmation dialog is not universally shown before termination: the 2023 servicing announcement, Build 23521, and Build 26120.1330. Do not assume every app, packaged application, or helper process behaves identically.
End task versus other ways to close an app
| Method | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Normal close | Responsive applications | Does not help when an app is frozen |
| Taskbar End task | Fast termination of one visible app | Can lose unsaved work and is not full process management |
| Task Manager | Choosing a specific process and viewing CPU, memory, disk, or network use | More steps; process names can be confusing |
PowerShell Stop-Process |
Automation and advanced troubleshooting | Requires the correct process name and command-line knowledge |
| Restart or sign out | Shell-wide or multiple application failures | Interrupts other work |
If End task does not work
- Try the app’s normal close command, then Alt + F4.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the application, and choose End task.
- For advanced users, run PowerShell:
Stop-Process -Name "appname" -Force. The process name may differ from the visible app name, and-Forcecan discard unsaved data. - From Command Prompt, an alternative is
taskkill /IM appname.exe /F; use the exact executable name. - If Explorer, the taskbar, or several programs are unresponsive, save what you can and restart Windows or sign out.
End task is a convenient taskbar shortcut, not a guarantee that every associated process will close. Use it deliberately when preserving the app’s unsaved state is less important than stopping the frozen process.
