Google announced a redesigned Chrome Web Store in September 2023, around the same time a separate change to Chrome’s release pipeline was reported for Chrome 119. The store redesign did not cause Chrome to release updates faster: one change concerned finding extensions, while the other concerned how quickly browser builds moved through development.
What changed in the Chrome Web Store?
For Chrome’s 15th anniversary in September 2023, Google introduced a public preview of a redesigned Chrome Web Store. It adopted the Material 3 visual style and refreshed the store’s layout, navigation and search to make extensions and themes easier to find. Google described the redesign in its Chromium announcement and Chrome anniversary update.
The changes went beyond appearance. The store added broader categories, personalized recommendations and an Editors’ Spotlight. Google also highlighted an AI-powered extension category. These were discovery features, not changes to the browser’s version-release process; their intended benefit was to help users navigate the catalog, not to guarantee that any particular extension would be promoted or gain installs.
Google also expanded Safety Check support for extensions that had been unpublished, violated store policies or were identified as potentially malicious. That safety information concerns extensions, rather than the speed at which Chrome itself is updated.

What did “faster Chrome releases” mean?
In this context, “release speed” meant moving software through Chrome’s development pipeline more quickly. It did not mean that Chrome would render pages faster, run JavaScript faster, or necessarily begin publishing Stable versions weekly.
Chrome development uses several channels. Canary and Dev provide early builds for ongoing development; Beta offers a later pre-release version for testing; Stable is the general-release channel. A code branch is a point at which work for a milestone is separated from ongoing development. Shortening the time between branching and Beta changes that pipeline interval. It is distinct from Stable milestone cadence and from security updates, which may follow their own timing.

What was reported for Chrome 119?
A contemporaneous report associated the 2023 adjustment with Chrome 119, then expected in October 2023: the interval between the code branch and Beta was to be shortened by one week. The specific timing and reduction were reported by Gizchina; they should not be read as a promise of weekly Stable releases or as a claim that every user would receive every update exactly one week sooner.

The purpose of a shorter pipeline interval is to reduce the time needed to get a version through development toward release. Rollouts can still vary by platform and may be staged, so the planned process change did not guarantee simultaneous delivery to all Chrome users.

Why Google had already been shortening the cycle
The Chrome 119 report fits a broader effort to deliver browser versions more frequently. Google said in 2021 that Chrome would move from a six-week to a four-week milestone cycle beginning with Chrome 94. It attributed the shorter cycle to improvements in testing and release processes, with the aim of delivering features and fixes sooner. Google also introduced Extended Stable for organizations that needed more time between major updates. Its explanation is in the Chromium Blog.
That history points to release engineering—not a storefront redesign—as the reason for shortening delivery timelines. The store and release-pipeline announcements appeared in the same anniversary news period, but their proximity does not establish a technical connection.

What the changes meant for users and developers
For Chrome users
- The store’s navigation, categories and recommendations were intended to make extensions and themes easier to discover.
- The expanded Safety Check information could help users identify certain problematic extensions.
- A shorter development pipeline was intended to reduce the time before browser improvements reached release stages, though it did not guarantee a uniform delivery date or faster page performance.
For extension developers
- New categories and recommendations could create additional routes to discovery, but listing in a redesigned store did not guarantee visibility, installs or revenue.
- More frequent browser changes can mean more compatibility work. Testing across Canary, Dev, Beta and Stable helps developers identify behavior changes before broad Stable availability.
- Chrome’s version cadence and the Web Store’s review and publishing process are separate. In a 2026 Chromium community notice, developers reported longer-than-expected submission and review times during a surge in submissions; that later operational issue should not be projected backward onto the 2023 redesign. How the release change differs from browser performance
Release cadence measures how often and how quickly versions move through the shipping process. Browser performance concerns how quickly Chrome performs work, such as rendering pages or executing code. Store usability concerns how readily people can find extensions. None of those measures proves the others improved. Google’s separate reporting on Speedometer and JetStream benchmarks, for example, addresses browser performance rather than the 2023 Web Store redesign or Chrome 119 pipeline timing: Google’s 2026 benchmark update.

What changed later: the planned 2026 two-week cycle
In March 2026, Google announced that Chrome Stable was scheduled to move from a four-week to a two-week milestone cycle beginning in September 2026, starting with Chrome 153. This is a later change to Stable cadence, not a consequence of the Web Store redesign or the Chrome 119 adjustment.
