Google Maps is easier to rely on when you prepare before you need it: download the right area for offline driving, sort places into useful lists, check alternate routes, and choose the least revealing way to share a journey. These tips cover the mobile app and desktop where their controls differ. Google changes its interface gradually, so a label or menu may look different on your device.
Set up Maps before you need it
A few minutes of setup can save time on a commute or trip. On mobile, saved places and lists are generally under You; Location Sharing, Timeline, Offline Maps, and Incognito mode are usually in the profile-picture menu. The current layout is documented for mobile in Google Maps Help, but labels and placement can vary by platform and rollout.
- Check that Maps is using the Google Account you intend to use.
- Save home, work, and other frequent destinations so you can find them quickly.
- Review navigation preferences, such as distance units and route options.
- Decide whether you want Timeline and Location Sharing enabled, and review their controls.
- Download maps for places where you expect weak or no service.
- Create a few purposeful lists, such as “Parking,” “Trip restaurants,” or “Medical locations,” rather than saving everything in one collection.
Keep navigating when service drops
Download an area before travel to preserve basic map access, place search, and driving navigation within that area. Google describes offline Maps in its offline Maps guide. Offline access is not a full substitute for a connection: live traffic is unavailable, and you should not assume that walking, cycling, transit, business details, or every route feature will work offline.

Download an area on mobile
- Open Maps and search for the city, region, or destination.
- Open its place sheet and choose Download if that option appears; or tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then Choose your own map.
- Adjust the rectangle to cover the area you need and tap Download.
- Before setting off, return to Offline maps and confirm the area is listed and current.
Download over a reliable connection. If the map is missing or does not cover your destination, reconnect and download the correct area or update it. If Incognito mode is on, turn it off: Offline Maps is disabled or limited in that mode. For remote travel, keep a backup plan rather than treating offline navigation as emergency guidance.

Compare routes instead of accepting the first suggestion
Search for a destination, tap Directions, and select a travel mode. Where alternatives are available, driving routes may appear in gray; tap one to inspect or select it. Google’s directions can reflect traffic or transit schedules, but options and accuracy depend on location and current data. See Google’s Android navigation guidance.
Open route options to consider avoiding tolls, highways, or ferries where those controls are available. A route with the lowest displayed time is not necessarily the simplest, safest, or cheapest: check tolls, complicated merges, restrictions, weather, road conditions, and the arrival time. If a route looks implausible, inspect it before starting. Follow road signs and local restrictions, and do not handle the phone while driving.
Save trips you take often
On mobile, search for a destination, tap Directions, choose driving, transit, or two-wheeler mode, and select a route. For transit, choose the preferred route before tapping Save. You can also open You and look under Saved trips for suggested trips. Google documents saved trips for Android and iPhone and iPad. The feature is mobile-only and supports driving, transit, and two-wheeler trips. A saved trip is a shortcut, not a promise that Maps will use the same route every time; traffic, schedules, closures, and conditions change.

Preview a destination before you arrive
Check the approach with Street View
Search for the destination, open its place details, and look for Street View imagery; on desktop, you can also drag the Street View figure to a covered street. Inspect the approach from the direction you will actually travel. This can help identify an entrance, corner, trailhead, or parking access point. Street View imagery may be old or unavailable, so it cannot confirm current access, hours, parking, or safety. Google’s feature guidance is at Google Maps Help.
Use Live View for a confusing walk
Where available, choose walking directions and tap Live View to see directional cues over the camera view. It can help when leaving a station or crossing a large intersection. Availability depends on device and location, and the feature can struggle indoors, in poor light, or around tall buildings. Keep your attention on your surroundings and stop somewhere safe before looking at the screen. Google describes it in its Maps tips guide.
Use map layers for the question you have
Tap the Layers control to switch among available map information. Layer availability and freshness vary by place; these are aids, not guarantees. Google’s Maps feature index covers available map features.

- Traffic: Check congestion before leaving or while safely stopped. It requires connectivity and can become stale.
- Transit: See nearby lines and stations; confirm disruptions and schedules with the transit agency when timing matters.
- Biking: Review mapped bike routes where coverage exists, while judging conditions and comfort yourself.
- Terrain: Spot hills that may affect a walk or ride.
- Satellite: Look for large parking areas, entrances, and trailheads, bearing in mind imagery may not show recent changes.
Organize places into lists you can use
Custom lists make saved places easier to retrieve and share. On desktop, open Maps, select Saved, choose New list, and give the list a name; you can add an icon and description. Search for a place, select Save, and choose the list. On mobile, lists are generally under You. Google’s instructions cover Android saved places.

Use names that make a list searchable and useful: “Trip — New York — restaurants,” “Open late,” “Parking options,” or “Future errands.” Separate lodging, food, attractions, and backup choices for a trip. Saved business information can change, so verify hours and location before relying on it. If pins clutter the map, hide or show a list; exact controls vary. Android help describes searching and filtering saved places, though controls may differ on other platforms.
Share a list, not a pile of individual pins
Custom lists can be shared by link, with permissions that may let recipients view or edit. Check the permission before sending. Starred places cannot be shared in the same way as regular lists, so use a custom list for collaboration. See Google’s desktop list-sharing guidance. Ordinary saved lists are for collecting and collaborating on places; My Maps is a separate tool better suited to custom maps and layered geographic projects.

Choose the right way to share
Different sharing controls reveal different amounts of information. Use the one that matches the task rather than sharing more than necessary.
- Place pin: Send one destination for a meetup.
- Directions: Send someone a route. On desktop, directions can be shared or printed; a map containing saved locations or distance measurements cannot be shared in precisely the same way. See Google’s directions-sharing instructions.
- List: Share several recommendations or a group itinerary, with viewing or editing access as appropriate.
- Trip progress: During navigation, open the navigation panel and choose Share trip progress, where available. This is tied to the journey rather than ongoing location visibility; the control is described in Google’s Maps tips.
- Live location: Use Location Sharing when someone needs ongoing visibility, such as during a walk home. Choose the recipient and duration carefully, then stop sharing when the purpose ends. Location Sharing is a separate account feature described in Google Maps Help.
Trip progress and live location updates can be interrupted by connectivity, battery, or permission problems, and a displayed position may lag. Neither is an emergency service. Sharing a route or destination does not share your live movement.

Maps includes a parking-location feature, but the control and wording can vary by phone and app state. After parking, open Maps and save the current position as the parking location if the option appears. Add a note such as “Level 4, blue section,” and set a reminder if the parking rules require one. Check the pin and take a photo of a level marker or nearby landmark in a large garage: GPS can be inaccurate indoors or place the pin on the wrong side of a street. The saved pin is not vehicle tracking and cannot tell you whether the car was towed or parking rules changed. See the Maps feature index.

Measure a distance or find coordinates
On desktop, right-click a starting point and choose Measure distance. Click additional points to trace a path; read the total and drag points to adjust it. This can estimate a segment across a park or between a venue and a parking area. A map measurement is not necessarily road, walking, or trail distance, and it is not a legal property survey.
To share a remote meeting point, use the map location’s coordinates where available rather than relying on a vague landmark. Confirm the recipient can open the location and that you have selected the intended point. Google’s measurement and location tools are covered in Google Maps Help.
Understand Incognito mode and Timeline
What Incognito mode changes
On Android or iPhone and iPad, tap your profile picture and choose Turn on Incognito mode. Google says that while it is on, Maps does not save browsing or search history to the Google Account, update Timeline, send certain notifications, or use activity to personalize Maps. However, features including Timeline, saved places, Offline Maps, commute, and some search and integration functions are unavailable or limited; the exact list differs between platforms. Incognito is not anonymity. Google says it does not change how activity may be used or saved by internet providers, other apps, voice search, or other Google services. Turn it off when you need saved places or a downloaded map.
Review Timeline intentionally
Timeline is an opt-in record of places visited and routes taken. When enabled, Google says precise device location may be saved regularly, including when Google apps are not being used. It can help recall a trip or venue, but it is sensitive location data. Review its setting and data controls in Maps rather than assuming old instructions still apply: Google notes ongoing changes to Timeline storage and controls. Incognito pauses Timeline on the device. - An offline area is missing: Check Offline maps, confirm the downloaded rectangle covered the destination, reconnect to update it, and turn off Incognito if it is active.
- GPS places you incorrectly: Move to an open area if safe, wait for the position to settle, and use a nearby landmark or saved note. Do not assume an indoor garage pin is exact.
- A control is missing: Check the profile menu or You tab, confirm the relevant feature is supported for your device and location, and account for gradual interface rollouts.
- Saved pins clutter the map: Organize places into separate lists and hide lists you do not need to see.
- A business or route looks wrong: Verify hours, closures, parking, restrictions, and current conditions with an authoritative source where possible; map information can be stale or incomplete.
- Navigation is unavailable or unsafe: Do not follow an implausible route blindly. Check the route before moving, obey signs and restrictions, and use a suitable backup in remote areas.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Download and confirm the map for areas with unreliable service.
- Save the hotel, station, parking, and key backup locations into clear lists.
- Check current hours, closures, route options, and restrictions.
- Save parking details and a nearby landmark when appropriate.
- Share only the place, list, directions, trip progress, or live location needed for the situation.
- Bring a charging solution and a backup navigation plan for remote travel.
