Google announced on March 4, 2021, that Chrome would move from a new major milestone every six weeks to every four weeks, starting with Chrome 94 in the third quarter of 2021. The change shortened the wait between major versions; it did not mean Chrome expired after four weeks. Google also introduced an eight-week Extended Stable option for eligible enterprise deployments. Google’s announcement and current Chromium release-cycle documentation describe the policy and its later details.
What Google changed—and what “life cycle” means
Before the change, Google released a new Chrome milestone every six weeks, a schedule it said had been in place for more than a decade. The March 2021 announcement moved that interval to four weeks. A milestone is a major version; it is not the full period for which the browser remains usable or receives updates.

Smaller updates continue between milestones. They can deliver security and regression fixes without waiting for the next major version. In the current Chromium documentation, Stable receives weekly refreshes, while Extended Stable receives refreshes every two weeks.

Google announced the change on March 4, 2021, and said it planned to start with Chrome 94 in Q3 2021. That was the plan at announcement time; current Chromium documentation describes the four-week Stable milestone cadence as the established schedule. Release timing can vary by platform and move when regressions or major holidays affect the schedule.

Why Google moved to four weeks
Google cited improvements to Chrome’s testing and release processes, as well as its deployment of biweekly security updates to reduce the time users waited for patches. It said the shorter milestone interval would get browser-platform features to users sooner. Those were Google’s stated reasons, not proof that a four-week cycle makes every release safer or improves every user’s experience.
What the schedule means for ordinary users
- Chrome’s major version number changes more often than it did under the six-week schedule.
- Features included in a milestone can reach Stable sooner, although not every milestone brings a noticeable interface change.
- Security and regression fixes can arrive in smaller refreshes between major versions.
- Consumers generally do not need to manage the cadence themselves; Chrome updates automatically where supported.
Google’s Stable rollout is staged rather than simultaneous: the current documentation says promotion generally reaches all users within one to two weeks unless serious problems intervene. A staged rollout lets the release progress over time, but it does not guarantee that every user receives an update on the same day.

What businesses should weigh
A four-week milestone can mean less time for an organization to validate internal web applications, extensions, authentication, proxies, certificates, endpoint-management policies, and device rollouts. Frequent version changes can also add work to QA matrices and support documentation. Administrators may need automated compatibility tests and staged deployment procedures so that an issue is found before an update reaches every managed device.
The trade-off is between getting the regular Stable channel’s milestones and changes sooner, and allowing more time between major version changes. Google’s Extended Stable channel offers the latter for eligible enterprise-managed Chrome Browser deployments on Windows and Mac. Its security coverage has limits, so a longer milestone interval should not be treated as automatically safer.

How Extended Stable works—and what it leaves out
Current Chromium documentation describes Extended Stable as an enterprise option with a new milestone every eight weeks. It is initially synchronized with regular Stable for the first four weeks of a milestone’s life, then the channels diverge. Extended Stable receives refreshes every two weeks.
Extended Stable receives important security fixes, but not every security-related change can be backported. Google warns that complex or risky changes—including some larger security-improving features—may appear only in regular Stable. The channel is therefore a deployment-management choice, not a promise of identical features and fixes on a slower schedule. Availability described in the current documentation is limited to enterprise administrators on Windows and Mac; it should not be assumed to apply to consumer installations or every platform.

What “acting like Mozilla” does—and does not—mean
The phrase is a comparison in the original headline, not Google’s description of its policy. Google’s announcement attributes the change to its own testing, release, and security-update practices; it does not cite Mozilla or Firefox as a cause. The comparison does not establish that Chrome and Firefox adopted identical release processes or that Google formally aligned its policy with Mozilla.

The 2021 announcement also said Google planned multiple stable-release options for Chrome OS administrators, with further details to follow. That statement alone does not establish a specific current Chrome OS policy.

How Chrome’s release process works now
Current Chromium documentation describes a sequence in which a milestone is developed on the main branch, a branch is cut, and the milestone is stabilized before moving through Beta and staged Stable promotion. The schedule is designed around a four-week Stable milestone cadence, with weekly Stable refreshes after launch. Platform differences, regressions, and major holidays can affect dates.

For most individual users, the shorter cycle mainly means more frequent major version changes behind the scenes. For administrators, the consequential decision is whether to use regular Stable’s four-week cadence or Extended Stable’s eight-week cadence while accounting for the latter’s limits on backported changes.
