Behind The Overlay Revival is a Firefox add-on for manually hiding website overlays; it is not a verified current Firefox-and-Chrome product. Mozilla’s listing identifies version 1.8.3, last updated April 22, 2019. That age means its compatibility with current Firefox releases is not assured, even though the listing’s historical requirement says Firefox 59 or later.
What Behind The Overlay Revival does
Behind The Overlay Revival is a Firefox fork of the earlier Behind The Overlay extension. It is intended to hide page elements layered over website content, such as newsletter prompts, sign-up dialogs, cookie notices, app-download prompts, and full-screen promotions. It is activated on demand from the toolbar or a context menu; it does not continuously apply blocking rules to every page.
The add-on’s description says it uses document.elementFromPoint() to identify the foreground element and can handle multiple overlay elements. In practical terms, it tries to remove what is visually in front of the page, and it advertises an attempt to restore scrolling when a site has locked it. It may take more than one activation to clear a stack of layers.
How to install it in Firefox
- Open the official Mozilla Add-ons page.
- Select Add to Firefox and review the permission prompt Firefox displays.
- Confirm the installation. If the toolbar icon is not visible, use Firefox’s extensions or toolbar controls to pin it.
- Open a page with an overlay and use the toolbar button to try removing it.
The listing names Iván Ruvalcaba as developer, gives the add-on a GPL-3.0-only license, and lists its size as approximately 34.97 KB. Mozilla hosts the listing; that does not mean Mozilla develops or maintains the add-on. Use the Mozilla listing rather than an unsigned or repackaged download from a third-party archive.

How to remove an overlay—and recover if it fails
- Navigate to the affected page and, if possible, save any text or form input before changing the page.
- Click the Behind The Overlay Revival toolbar icon. The extension’s version history records that version 1.8.1 restored both the browser-action button and context-menu option.
- If a layer disappears but another remains, activate the extension again. A page can have a backdrop, modal, and separate prompt stacked together.
- If the toolbar action does not help, try the extension’s context-menu command on the page.
- If the overlay is gone but scrolling is still locked, reload the page and try again, or close the dialog using the site’s own controls. The advertised scroll restoration is not reliable on every page; one user report describes a case where scrolling remained disabled (user report).
Reloading can restore the overlay because the site may recreate it. If the layout becomes corrupted or the wrong element disappears, reload and use the page normally instead.
Permissions, privacy and maintenance
The add-on listing describes use of tabs and activeTab to determine whether its controls should appear on HTTP and HTTPS pages, menus for context-menu entries, and storage for local options. Mozilla’s description characterizes its permissions as limited and says it does not continuously inject large CSS rule sets. Check the permission prompt Firefox currently shows rather than treating an older listing description as a guarantee of what a current browser will request.

The key maintenance caveat is the date: version 1.8.3 was last listed as updated on April 22, 2019. Its version history says Firefox 59 and later, but that old declaration does not establish that every present Firefox version works correctly. The retrieved listing showed a 4.4/5 rating from 79 reviews; those figures describe its listing history, not current compatibility or a security audit. The age is a reason for caution, not evidence by itself that the add-on is malicious.
Is there a Chrome version?
The Revival fork is verified on Mozilla Add-ons as a Firefox extension. A current official Chrome Web Store listing for Behind The Overlay Revival was not verified. Older coverage discusses the original Behind The Overlay as a Chrome-and-Firefox extension, but that is not evidence that the Revival fork is currently available for Chrome (historical coverage of the original).

Do not assume a Chrome version exists simply because Firefox and Chrome both support extensions. For Chrome, choose a separately listed and maintained tool, or consider a general-purpose content blocker such as uBlock Origin. Its element zapper can remove an individual page element, while annoyance filters can address recurring clutter; these are different tools, not Chrome editions of Revival.
What it cannot reliably remove
- Content behind a paywall or sign-in: The add-on hides visible page elements; it does not supply article content the site has not delivered, and it should not be treated as a paywall or authentication bypass.
- CAPTCHAs, age checks and access controls: These are not ordinary decorative overlays and may be necessary steps to use a site.
- Every technical implementation: It may fail on content inside cross-origin frames, shadow DOM, canvas-rendered interfaces, unusual stacking contexts, or elements that JavaScript rapidly recreates.
- Every scroll lock: A site can disable scrolling separately from the visible dialog, so hiding the dialog may not restore page movement.
- Only unwanted elements: The topmost element might be a video control, navigation drawer, shopping panel, accessibility prompt, or consent dialog that the user needs.
The add-on is described for ordinary HTTP and HTTPS pages, not browser-internal pages, extension pages, or other non-web addresses. Removing a consent interface can also leave the site without a clear record of the choice you intended to make; use the site’s reject, close, or preferences control when available.

Choose Revival only if you use Firefox, want a manual option for occasional overlays, and accept that a tool last updated in 2019 may not handle modern sites consistently. If you need Chrome support, automatic filtering, or ongoing maintenance, select a separately maintained alternative rather than assuming the Revival fork covers those needs.
