The best gaming TVs in the “40-inch” class are usually 42- or 43-inch models. Exact 40-inch sets are mostly inexpensive 60Hz televisions, while the strongest choices for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC gaming are 42-inch OLEDs and 43-inch Mini-LED sets. This guide covers the practical 40–43-inch category and clearly separates true high-refresh gaming TVs from budget models that are suitable mainly for 60Hz play.

Screen size is measured diagonally, so a 42-inch panel is only slightly larger than a 40-inch one, and a 43-inch LCD may have a similar footprint once bezels and stands are considered. Rather than quietly calling every compact set a 40-inch TV, this list states each model’s actual diagonal.

The serious-gaming tier is dominated by 42-inch OLEDs. They provide 4K resolution, 120Hz or faster native refresh, very fast pixel response and HDMI 2.1. The 43-inch LCD and Mini-LED tier is brighter and often cheaper, but many models remain 60Hz or support 120Hz only at 1080p. Exact 40-inch sets are sensible for a Switch-only setup, a spare room or a strict budget—not for someone specifically buying a 4K/120Hz display.
Features that matter for gaming
- Native refresh rate: Target 120Hz for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. A 144Hz or 165Hz panel is mainly useful to PC players. “Motion rate” marketing numbers are not native refresh rates.
- 4K/120 support and HDMI 2.1: Confirm the actual resolution and refresh combination and count full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports. Some televisions advertise HDMI 2.1 but provide only one suitable port.
- VRR: HDMI Forum VRR, AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-SYNC can vary by input, firmware and resolution, so check compatibility with your console or GPU.
- ALLM and input lag: ALLM automatically selects a low-latency mode. Measured input lag is more meaningful than an HDMI-version label.
- HDR: OLED gives perfect blacks and excellent contrast. Mini-LED and Neo QLED models can be brighter across a whole screen. Check whether the set supports HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision or HDR10+.
- Room and reflections: Glossy OLED panels can reflect windows and lamps. Anti-glare LCD/Mini-LED sets are often easier to use in daylight.
- Burn-in management: OLED is excellent for varied games and mixed use, but a static desktop or HUD displayed for many hours every day creates more risk. Use panel-care features and vary content.
- Ports and audio: A soundbar may occupy the eARC port. Plan connections for a PS5, Xbox, PC and other devices before buying.
15 best 40–43-inch TVs for gaming
1. LG C6 OLED — 42 inches
Best overall compact gaming TV. The 2026 C6 combines 4K OLED contrast with a native 165Hz panel, four HDMI 2.1 inputs, broad VRR support and Dolby Vision. Choose it if: you want one compact display for PS5, Xbox and a high-end PC. Caveats: it is expensive, reflections can be visible in bright rooms, and OLED care remains sensible for static content.
2. LG C5 OLED — 42 inches
Best value premium pick. The C5 offers 4K at 120Hz, up to 144Hz VRR, four HDMI 2.1 ports and Dolby Vision. As the previous generation, it is often the smarter purchase when clearance pricing creates a substantial gap versus the C6. Check the exact retailer suffix, remaining warranty and whether the discount is large enough to justify buying the older model.
3. Samsung S90F OLED — 42 inches
Best Samsung gaming value. The S90F has a native 120Hz panel, up to 144Hz operation and four HDMI 2.1 ports. It is a strong match for consoles and PCs, particularly when sold below newer 2026 models.
Its major limitation is Samsung’s lack of Dolby Vision. Xbox owners who specifically want Dolby Vision gaming should favor the LG C5 or C6.

4. Samsung S90H OLED — 42 inches
Current-generation Samsung alternative. The S90H brings Samsung’s latest gaming features to the compact OLED category and suits buyers who want a current model with high refresh and HDMI 2.1.
Do not assume it is automatically better value than the S90F: current coverage indicates that the older S90F can deliver most of the gaming experience for less. Samsung still omits Dolby Vision.
5. Samsung QN90F Neo QLED — 43 inches
Best bright-room choice. Mini-LED backlighting, strong brightness and glare reduction make the 43-inch QN90F more practical than a glossy OLED in a sunny room or on a desk. TechRadar highlights it as a compact gaming-friendly Neo QLED. Read the QN90F review.
It costs a premium for a 43-inch LCD, lacks Dolby Vision and cannot match OLED’s pixel-level black control or response time.
6. Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K — 43 inches
Best cheaper Mini-LED. RTINGS lists this Vizio as a leading inexpensive 43-inch option, with useful brightness, black levels and color. It supports 4K at 60Hz and 1080p at 120Hz.
That specification is the critical caveat: it is not a 4K/120Hz television. It is a good value for 60fps console gaming and HDR in a bright room, but not for a PS5 or PC buyer demanding 4K high refresh. Vizio’s app selection is also smaller than Google TV, Roku, webOS or Tizen.
7. Hisense 43QD6QF — 43 inches
Budget QLED alternative. The 43QD6QF is aimed at affordable casual gaming and offers better processing and motion handling than some entry-level rivals. It remains a 60Hz-class choice without the full HDMI 2.1/4K-120 feature set of the OLED recommendations.

8. Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED — 43 inches
Best value smart-TV package. TechRadar reports vibrant 4K HDR, Dolby Vision gaming and measured input lag around 10ms for the Omni QLED, but no 4K/120Hz mode. The 43-inch model also lacks the local dimming used on larger versions. See TechRadar’s compact-TV guide.
It is a sensible streaming-and-console TV for 60fps play, not a competitive PC display. “QLED” describes a color layer; it does not guarantee 120Hz or HDMI 2.1.
9. Amazon Fire TV 2-Series — 40 inches
Best exact 40-inch budget option. The 2-Series is compact and inexpensive for a bedroom, dorm or Switch setup. Expect basic 4K/60Hz-class gaming and a simple Fire TV interface.
It is not a serious high-refresh gaming television: do not buy it expecting 4K/120Hz, VRR or HDMI 2.1. Verify the current 40-inch SKU because Amazon’s model lineup changes.

10. Samsung Q60-series QLED — 43 inches
Mainstream Samsung budget choice. The Q60 line offers a polished Tizen interface, attractive color and acceptable input response for ordinary console gaming.
Most versions are 60Hz and are not 4K/120Hz gaming displays. Confirm the exact 2026 model number and input specifications; a sale price does not turn a 60Hz panel into a high-refresh set.

11. Sony BRAVIA 3 — 43 inches
Processing-focused budget option. Sony’s image processing and upscaling can benefit lower-resolution games and streaming. It is suitable for standard console play and mixed use.
The BRAVIA 3 is not aimed at 4K/120Hz gaming. Choose it for processing and brand ecosystem rather than advanced gaming connectivity.
12. Roku Plus Series — 43 inches
Simple Roku experience. The 43-inch Plus Series is convenient for buyers who want Roku’s straightforward interface and broad streaming support alongside casual gaming.
Availability varies, and these sets generally are not high-refresh gaming displays. Check the exact panel rate and VRR support before purchase.
13. TCL Q6/Q651-series equivalent — 43 inches
Sale-priced budget QLED. TCL’s 43-inch QLED models can be compelling when heavily discounted and are suitable for 60Hz console gaming.
Model names, refresh rates and ports vary by year and retailer. Verify the exact 2026 SKU, whether 120Hz means 1080p only, and the number of HDMI 2.1 ports before treating it as a gaming upgrade.

They generally lack the low-latency consistency, HDR impact and high-refresh connectivity of premium sets. Buy one when price is the overriding requirement.
15. LG entry-level 43-inch LCD equivalent — 43 inches
Budget webOS option. An entry-level LG LCD provides a familiar interface and works well for Nintendo Switch 2 or ordinary 60Hz console gaming.
Do not confuse it with the LG OLED C5 or C6. Entry-level LCD models normally lack OLED contrast, fast pixel response and the complete 4K/120Hz gaming feature set.

Best choice by gamer and room
PS5 or PS5 Pro
Prioritize 4K/120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM. The LG C5 and C6 are the safest compact choices; Samsung OLEDs are also strong if Dolby Vision is not important. The Vizio and Omni QLED are fine for 60fps gaming but are not equivalent.
Xbox Series X|S
Look for 4K/120Hz, HDMI Forum VRR and, if desired, Dolby Vision gaming. LG’s C5 and C6 are more flexible. Samsung models offer excellent gaming features but do not support Dolby Vision.
Nintendo Switch 2
Low input lag, good upscaling, HDMI-CEC and reliable automatic input switching matter more than 144Hz. A 40- or 43-inch 60Hz model can be the rational choice if you do not also own a PS5, Xbox or gaming PC.
PC gaming
Target 144Hz or 165Hz, four HDMI 2.1 ports where possible, VRR support, 4:4:4 chroma and a usable PC input mode. The LG C6 is particularly compelling for high-end PCs. Bright rooms or static desktop use
The Samsung QN90F is the strongest fit here. Mini-LED and Neo QLED sets can deliver more full-screen brightness and avoid OLED burn-in concerns, although they sacrifice OLED’s perfect blacks.
Setup checklist
- Connect the console or PC to the television’s documented HDMI 2.1 input, not merely any HDMI socket.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 and VRR.
- Enable Game Mode and ALLM; confirm the console reports 4K, 120Hz and HDR where supported.
- Turn on VRR in both the TV and console or GPU control panel.
- On a PC, select the correct input label and verify RGB/4:4:4 output for readable text.
- Plan eARC carefully if using a soundbar. It may reduce the number of free high-bandwidth inputs.
- For OLED, leave panel-care and pixel-refresh features enabled and avoid displaying a static desktop or HUD indefinitely.
- Measure the complete stand footprint, panel width, VESA pattern, depth and soundbar clearance—not just the diagonal size.
How this ranking was judged
The ranking weighs gaming performance (35%), connectivity (20%), picture quality (20%), room suitability (10%), value and availability (10%), and smart-TV/audio features (5%). Refresh rate, VRR, measured latency, HDR, reflections and port count matter more than voice assistants, artificial-intelligence menus or decorative gaming dashboards. Prices and stock should be checked on publication day because model-year substitutions and promotions are common.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the 42-inch LG C6 if you want the most complete compact gaming TV and can afford it. Choose the LG C5 when its discount is substantial. Pick the Samsung QN90F for a bright room or static PC use, and the Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K or Amazon Omni QLED when 60Hz gaming is enough. Exact 40-inch televisions are best reserved for inexpensive, casual or Switch-focused setups.
