If your Steam friends can see that you’re Online but can’t see a game title, first check Game details privacy and whether that particular game is marked Private. If they see you as offline, check your Steam status: Invisible deliberately makes you appear offline, while Offline disconnects you from Steam features that require a connection. If the settings and connection are fine, the game or its launcher may not be reporting normal Steam presence.
Try these two settings first
To let Steam friends see the games you play, check both your account-wide setting and the privacy setting for the individual game.
- In Steam, open your profile and select View Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings.
- Set Game details to Friends Only. Choose Public only if you want people who are not your friends to see those details too. If your profile is Private, change its visibility as needed for friends to see your game details.
- In your Library, right-click the game and choose Manage. If Mark as Private is enabled, turn it off for that game.
Steam’s private-game settings hide the game’s ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity from other users. A private game does not normally display a “Playing” status in friends’ lists or chats. Changing Game details does not override a separate Private setting on a game.
After changing a setting, close and reopen the Friends List. If it still looks unchanged, fully exit and restart Steam, then ask your friend to refresh their view. This is a sensible refresh step, not a guarantee that every status updates instantly.

What the different symptoms usually mean

Check whether your status is Online, Invisible, or Offline
Open the Friends List and use its status dropdown to select Online if you want friends to see that you are online and, where privacy settings and the game allow it, what you are playing.
- Online: friends can generally see your online and game status, subject to privacy settings and the game’s reporting behavior.
- Invisible: you appear offline to other users, but can still use chat and Steam Community features. If you chose this to browse or chat privately, the missing game status is expected.
- Offline: you appear offline and lose access to Steam Community features that require a connection.
- Do Not Disturb: this suppresses notifications; it is not the main setting for hiding your game status.
Steam explains the difference between Invisible and other Friends & Chat statuses. Changing Game details alone will not make your game visible while you remain Invisible.

Find out whether the problem is one game or Steam in general
Try launching a second, ordinary Steam game from your Library. This simple comparison helps narrow down the cause:

- One game appears and one does not: check the missing game’s Private setting and how it launches. A game-specific issue is more likely than a profile-wide setting.
- A full release appears but a demo or playtest does not: that app may publish less presence information. It does not automatically mean your privacy settings are wrong.
Steam’s Manage menu is where to inspect a game’s Private setting. Do not confuse Mark as Private with Hide this game: hiding a game is primarily a way to organize your own Library, while Private controls what other people can see about your ownership, status, playtime, and activity.

Steam may not show every app as “Playing”
Steam can know that an application is running without displaying a conventional game title or detailed status to friends. The result can depend on the app’s integration with Steam, how it launches, and what presence information it provides. Steam’s developer documentation describes enhanced presence such as a game state, map, or mode as information a game can provide—not a guarantee that every app will show those details.
Previews and playtests are one possible exception. For example, Age of Empires support notes that a preview or playtest may show a player as Online without an in-game label. That example should not be treated as a rule for every playtest. Demos, tools, non-Steam shortcuts, and games that rely on an external publisher launcher can also behave differently. A title appearing in Recently Played or profile activity does not necessarily mean it will show as a live Friends List status.

Private does not mean unobservable in every multiplayer situation
Marking a game Private hides its normal ownership and activity details from other users, but it is not a guarantee of invisibility in every game interaction. Steam says that if you invite a friend to join a private multiplayer game, that friend can see your in-game status until you leave the game or disconnect from Steam. Steam also notes that your Steam ID may be visible to players on the same matchmaking server. See Steam’s explanation of private games for these exceptions.
Broadcasting is a separate setting
Steam Broadcasting controls whether other people can watch your gameplay. It is not the primary control for whether your current game title appears in a Friends List. Steam describes broadcasting as something a friend may choose to watch after seeing that you are in-game; viewing access and game-status visibility are separate. Changing broadcast privacy is unlikely to fix a missing “Playing” label.

Full troubleshooting checklist
- Set your status to Online. In the Friends List status dropdown, select Online rather than Invisible or Offline.
- Allow friends to see Game details. Go to Profile → View Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings and set Game details to Friends Only. Use Public only if you want non-friends to see the information.
- Check the missing game itself. In the Library, right-click it and choose Manage. Disable Mark as Private if you want that game’s status and related activity to be visible.
- Reconnect Steam if necessary. Make sure the client is not in Offline Mode or showing a reconnect state. Steam’s Offline Mode guidance explains that Steam features requiring a connection are unavailable while offline. Exit Steam completely, reopen it, confirm it is online, and then launch the game from your Library.
- Refresh both views. Close and reopen your Friends List, and ask your friend to do the same. A full Steam restart is a practical next step if the old status remains.
- Test another ordinary Steam game. If it appears, investigate the original game, its launcher, and its presence support. If no game appears, revisit the account settings and connection.
- Compare more than one Steam view. Your friend can check the Friends List, chat window, your profile, and the Library’s friends-playing area. A missing activity-feed item or notification does not by itself establish that live status is hidden; profile activity is not a guaranteed real-time indicator.
- If one app still fails, treat it as app-specific. Check the game’s support information for known playtest, launcher, or presence behavior. Do not assume Steam is malfunctioning until you have ruled out privacy, status, connection, and app-specific causes.
If you want to hide what you are playing instead
Choose Invisible if you want to appear offline while keeping chat and Community access. Choose Offline when you also want to disconnect from Steam features that require a connection. To hide game details more broadly, adjust Game details in Privacy Settings; to hide only selected titles, mark those games Private. Each choice affects more than just the live game label, and private multiplayer interactions have the exceptions described above.
