A motherboard CMOS battery is usually a 3-volt CR2032 lithium coin cell. It powers the real-time clock and helps retain some BIOS/UEFI settings while a computer is shut down and disconnected from AC power. A weak battery commonly causes the date and time to reset, firmware warnings, and loss of custom settings—but not every boot or power problem is a battery fault.
Most conventional desktop motherboards use a loose CR2032. Laptops, mini-PCs, NUCs, OEM systems, and servers may instead use a wrapped battery with a cable and proprietary connector. Identify the exact computer or motherboard before buying a replacement.
What is a CMOS battery?
“CMOS battery,” “RTC battery,” “coin-cell battery,” and “system battery” are common names for the small backup battery attached to a motherboard. The battery’s practical jobs are to:
- Maintain the real-time clock when the system is off.
- Help preserve firmware configuration while the computer is disconnected from mains power.
- Support legacy battery-backed CMOS functions on older platforms.
It does not power the BIOS or UEFI firmware chip. Firmware is stored in flash memory. Modern systems also store some settings in nonvolatile memory, so removing the battery does not necessarily erase every setting.

When a desktop remains plugged in, standby power may reduce the load on the coin cell. Unplugging the system makes the battery more important, but leaving a PC connected does not guarantee that the battery will never fail. Dell describes the battery’s role and common symptoms in its desktop replacement guide.
Symptoms of a failing battery
- Date and time reset after every complete shutdown or power loss.
- Messages such as “CMOS Date/Time Not Set,” “CMOS checksum error,” or “time-of-day not set.”
- BIOS/UEFI settings return to defaults.
- Boot order, fan settings, virtualization, XMP/EXPO, or other custom options disappear.
- The computer pauses at startup and asks you to enter Setup or load defaults.
- The operating system shows an incorrect date after the machine has been unplugged.
A slow boot, random application crash, no display, or a completely dead computer does not by itself indicate a bad CMOS battery. Those symptoms more commonly involve power, memory, graphics, storage, firmware, or another hardware fault.
How long does a CMOS battery last?
There is no universal replacement schedule. Life depends on motherboard design, standby power, temperature, time spent unplugged, and battery age and quality. Dell gives an approximate two-to-three-year estimate for a typical desktop, while ASUS cites about three years when an NUC is not connected to AC power. These are platform-specific estimates, not guarantees. Replace the battery when symptoms appear or when the manufacturer specifies an interval.

Standard desktop socket
The usual part is a new, unused CR2032, 3 V lithium primary coin cell. Check the motherboard manual and the marking on the old battery. Dell recommends a brand-new replacement rather than a used cell, and ASUS identifies a CR2032 3 V lithium battery for its motherboard procedure.

Wired or proprietary assembly
Many laptops, compact PCs, NUCs, thin clients, OEM systems, and servers use a CR2032 inside a plastic wrapper, with welded tabs, a short cable, and a two-pin or Molex-style connector. ASUS documents NUC systems that require this type of wired assembly (ASUS support).
Match the exact model, voltage, chemistry, connector, polarity, cable length, insulation, holder, and—where applicable—the manufacturer part number. Do not substitute a bare coin cell for a protected wired pack. Do not casually replace a CR2032 with a rechargeable LIR2032, use a reversed connector, or fit a battery with the wrong tabs or holder.

Exact steps vary by system. Use the computer or motherboard service manual as the authority, especially for servers and proprietary machines.

- Shut down normally.
- Switch off the PSU if it has a switch and disconnect the AC cord. Disconnect every power cord on a server.
- Remove other power sources as appropriate, then press the power button briefly to discharge residual energy.
- Work on a stable, nonconductive surface and take basic anti-static precautions.
- If the system still boots, photograph or record custom BIOS/UEFI settings.
Dell instructs users to disconnect all power before opening a desktop. Lenovo warns that server standby power can remain present unless every required power source is removed (Lenovo server guidance).

Locate and remove the old cell
Look for a silver coin cell in a circular socket, marked CR2032, BAT1, BT1, or RTC. It may be hidden under a graphics card, heatsink, drive cage, or shield. A wired pack will connect to a small motherboard header.
- For a socketed cell, identify the retaining clip.
- Push the clip away from the battery, preferably with a nonmetallic tool.
- Let the cell lift, then remove it by its edges.
- Do not pry against motherboard traces or force the socket.
ASUS describes releasing the socket latch, while Dell recommends an anti-static plastic scribe and cautions against using a metal object to pry the cell (ASUS procedure; Dell procedure).
Install the new battery
- Confirm that the replacement matches the original.
- Check the socket’s polarity markings. On a typical desktop socket, the positive (+) side faces up, but the manual is authoritative.
- Slide one edge under the retaining lip and press the other edge down until the clip holds it.
- Do not bend the clip or apply excessive force.
For a wired battery, disconnect and reconnect by the plug—not the wires—match polarity exactly, and route the cable as it was originally installed. Lenovo specifically warns that excessive force can damage the socket or system board (Lenovo instructions).

- Replace the case panels and reconnect power.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup when prompted.
- Set the date and time.
- Check the boot drive and boot order.
- Restore the original UEFI versus legacy/CSM mode and SATA AHCI versus RAID mode.
- Review Secure Boot, TPM, virtualization, fan controls, integrated devices, and XMP/EXPO or other memory profiles.
- Save and restart.
Settings may reset when the battery is removed or fails. Depending on the platform, this can include configuration data and sometimes passwords; it does not happen identically on every system. Lenovo’s documentation recommends resetting date, time, and configuration after replacement (Lenovo guidance).

Finally, shut down, disconnect AC power for several minutes, reconnect it, and check the clock and settings again. This verifies retention rather than merely confirming that the PC booted once.
Desktop, laptop, mini-PC, and server differences
- ATX or microATX desktop: Usually an exposed CR2032 with a retaining clip.
- Laptop: Often a wrapped, adhesive-backed, two-wire RTC module requiring model-specific disassembly.
- Mini-PC or NUC: May require a wired CR2032 and proprietary connector; the part may be difficult to source locally.
- Server: May involve multiple boards, several power cords, and manufacturer-approved service procedures. Follow the exact service manual.
If the new battery does not fix the problem
The time still resets
Verify the battery type, polarity, freshness, and contact. For a wired module, check connector seating and polarity. Enter firmware Setup, set the clock, shut down, disconnect AC power, wait several minutes, and check again. If a verified new battery still loses time, suspect a damaged socket, RTC circuitry, standby-power fault, firmware problem, or motherboard failure rather than repeatedly buying batteries. An iFixit repair guide notes that continued date/time loss can indicate motherboard hardware trouble.
The PC will not boot
Check whether the boot drive is detected, then verify boot mode, SATA AHCI/RAID mode, Secure Boot, memory profiles, and boot order. Also inspect cables and expansion cards that may have been disturbed. Do not reinstall the operating system until these firmware settings have been checked.
A CMOS warning appears once
A single defaults-loaded or checksum warning immediately after replacement can be expected. Enter Setup, confirm appropriate settings, set the clock, save, and reboot. A warning that returns after every complete power loss needs further diagnosis.

The battery is soldered, wrapped, or the clip is broken
Do not improvise with glue, exposed wires, or a loose cell. Obtain the complete compatible assembly or use an authorized repair provider. Desoldering a laptop or proprietary pack without the correct procedure can damage the board.

Replacing a battery and deliberately clearing CMOS are different operations. A jumper or Clear CMOS button should be used only as described in the motherboard manual, and removing a battery does not always erase all modern firmware settings.
Safety and disposal
- Disconnect AC power before opening a desktop; remove all server power cords.
- Do not short the battery terminals, crush, puncture, heat, burn, recharge, or disassemble a CR2032.
- Keep loose coin cells away from children and pets; swallowing one is a medical emergency.
- Keep the replacement in its packaging until installation.
- Recycle or dispose of the old lithium cell according to local battery or hazardous-waste rules.

- “The battery powers the BIOS.”
- It supports the clock and some configuration functions; the BIOS/UEFI code is stored in flash.
- “Every motherboard takes a CR2032.”
- Most conventional desktop boards do, but many portable, compact, OEM, and server systems use wired assemblies.
- “A dead battery prevents the PC from turning on.”
- It usually causes clock loss or firmware prompts, not a completely dead system.
- “Removing the battery always clears CMOS.”
- The result depends on the platform’s storage design. Use the documented Clear CMOS method when a deliberate reset is required.
- “Any CR2032 is interchangeable.”
- The cell rating may match while the connector, polarity, insulation, or physical assembly does not.

Will replacing the CMOS battery delete Windows?
