Use your GPU’s tuning software to raise its fan speed temporarily or, better, set a temperature-based fan curve. First check whether the card is actually overheating: many graphics cards stop their fans at light loads by design. A faster fan can help when heat is limiting performance, but it cannot fix dust, restricted airflow, or a failing cooler.

Check whether the fan behavior is normal

A fan that is stopped while the PC is idle is not necessarily broken. Some cards use a fan-stop mode—AMD calls its option Zero RPM, while MSI uses Zero Frozr on supported cards—to reduce noise at light loads. The fans should start as temperature or GPU workload rises, though the precise threshold depends on the card. See AMD’s explanation of Zero RPM and MSI’s fan-stop guidance.

Check the GPU temperature, utilization, clock speed, fan speed or RPM, and performance during the same game or workload that seems to cause trouble. A temperature number alone does not establish that a card is overheating: limits vary by model, sensor, firmware, and cooler. Look for signs such as sustained clock or performance drops, crashes, artifacts, or temperatures that continue climbing under load. If the card performs normally and the fans stop only at idle, that may be expected behavior.

Quick test: command a faster fan speed

  1. Close unnecessary applications and open the GPU’s tuning or monitoring software.
  2. Temporarily select a moderate fixed fan speed, such as 50% or 70%. These are test values, not recommendations for every card. If you need to check whether a fan responds, you can briefly test a higher setting.
  3. Run the same game or repeatable workload that produced the high temperature. Watch temperature, fan RPM, clock speed, noise, and stability.
  4. When the test ends, return fan control to Automatic unless you are moving on to a properly tested custom curve.

If temperature drops substantially, the automatic curve may be too quiet or conservative for your workload. If it barely changes, increasing fan speed may not address the cause: check for dust, restricted case airflow, a blocked heatsink, a failed fan, or a pump problem on a liquid-cooled card. Do not leave a GPU at 100% fan speed as a general fix; it is loud, can add wear, and may hide a cooling fault.

Set a fan curve instead of running one speed all the time

A fixed speed holds the fan at one setting regardless of temperature. A fan curve changes its speed as the GPU warms up. A maximum fan-speed control sets the upper limit the automatic controller may use, while a Zero RPM setting governs whether the fans can stop under light load. A curve is usually more practical than constant high speed: it can keep the card quiet at idle and increase airflow when gaming or rendering.

Here is an illustrative starting point, not a universal safe or optimal profile:

GPU temperature Example fan speed
40°C 0–25%
50°C 30–40%
60°C 45–55%
70°C 60–70%
80°C 75–85%
85°C or higher 90–100%

Your card’s cooler, firmware, ambient temperature, and noise tolerance may call for a different curve. Make the speed rise smoothly rather than jumping abruptly, and increase it before the GPU reaches its usual sustained high-load temperature. A steep increase near the temperature you actually observe under load can help, but test the result in your own workload. If the software supports hysteresis, it can help prevent repeated start-and-stop changes when temperature hovers near a transition point.

AMD Radeon: tune the fan in Adrenalin

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, then go to Performance → Tuning.
  2. Enable manual or custom tuning if prompted, then turn on Fan Tuning.
  3. For a quick adjustment, change Max Fan Speed (%). For a temperature-based profile, enable Advanced Control and adjust the fan-speed (PWM) and temperature points on the graph.
  4. Decide whether to leave Zero RPM enabled. Keeping it on can keep the card quiet under light load; disabling it can keep the fans turning at low temperatures if you prefer continuous airflow.
  5. Select Apply Changes, test the card under load, and use the reset control to return to defaults if the result is noisy, unstable, or ineffective.

Menu labels and available controls can vary by software release and GPU. AMD documents the fan controls and Zero RPM behavior in its Adrenalin fan-tuning guide; its performance-tuning overview describes the noise-versus-temperature trade-off.

NVIDIA GeForce: check the NVIDIA App’s tuning controls

  1. Open or install the official NVIDIA App.
  2. Go to System → Performance and review the tuning controls available for your GPU.
  3. If your hardware and software expose fan-speed targets, make a modest adjustment and test it under load while monitoring temperature and noise.
  4. Restore the default or automatic profile if the change is ineffective or causes excessive noise or instability.

The available controls depend on the GPU, driver, operating system, and app version. Do not assume every GeForce card offers a fully editable temperature/fan curve. NVIDIA also offers automatic GPU tuning, which tests performance-related settings and may take about 10–20 minutes; that is not the same as simply changing a fan target. If you use that feature, avoid other demanding GPU work while it runs. See NVIDIA’s tuning details and feature overview.

Use MSI Afterburner on supported desktop cards

MSI Afterburner supports fan curves on many desktop graphics cards, including some made by other vendors, but it does not work with every card or system. Download it through MSI’s official page or another source MSI identifies as legitimate.

If the curve does nothing or the fan keeps stopping

A setting that appears to have no effect can have several causes: the GPU may not support that control, its firmware may override software commands, the fan may be below its permitted minimum, the setting may not have been applied, or another utility may be issuing conflicting commands. The GPU may also still be below its fan-stop threshold. Laptop and OEM systems can impose additional firmware limits.

  • Disable other GPU-tuning utilities so only one is controlling the fan.
  • Check that the setting was applied, then restart the tuning app; restart Windows if needed.
  • Return to automatic/default control and try a moderate fixed-speed test.
  • If fan stop/start cycling is the problem, move the transition point away from the card’s idle temperature. If available, use hysteresis or a low continuous minimum speed instead of Zero RPM.
  • If the fan still will not respond, do not keep forcing software settings. Inspect the fan and cooler or seek service.

If a change causes crashes, artifacts, or abnormal temperatures, reset the tuning utility, disable its custom control, and remove its option to apply the profile at Windows startup. Restart the PC. If a broken profile loads too early to undo normally, use Windows Safe Mode to disable or remove the utility’s startup entry. Reinstall the graphics driver only if the problem persists after restoring defaults.

Laptop GPU fans have different limits

Many laptop GPU fans are controlled by the laptop’s firmware or embedded controller, and custom curves may be unavailable. MSI specifically notes that laptop fan behavior can be preset by BIOS or firmware in its Afterburner documentation. A desktop-GPU fan tutorial or third-party utility is not guaranteed to override those controls.

Use the laptop maker’s performance or cooling mode, and check BIOS/UEFI for fan options if available. Keep intake and exhaust vents clear, clean dust safely, and use a hard surface rather than a bed or other soft material. Raising the rear or using a cooling pad may help only if it improves airflow into that model’s intakes.

If the GPU is still hot at high fan speed

When temperature barely improves even at a high commanded speed, troubleshoot the cooling system rather than making the curve more aggressive. With the PC powered off, check for dust-packed heatsink fins, blocked vents, and restricted case intake or exhaust. Confirm that the card’s fans spin freely and do not scrape, click, or grind. For liquid-cooled cards, check the pump and radiator fans. High room temperature, poor heatsink contact, or degraded thermal material can also contribute; cooler repairs may require experience or professional service.

  • Suitable for ASUS RTX 3050 PHOENIX / RTX 3060 PHOENIX
  • Incompatible with other Graphics Card
  • Fan diameter:95mm
  • Power connector: 6 Pin

For a laptop, clean its vents and avoid blocking them. For any system, do not continue a workload that causes repeated overheating, artifacts, or crashes. A visibly stalled fan or abnormal mechanical noise is a hardware issue, not a fan-curve problem.

Reduce heat without adding fan noise

If noise is the main concern, reducing the heat the GPU produces can help more than demanding more fan speed. Try a frame-rate cap, less demanding graphics settings, or an in-game upscaling or efficiency option. Improving case airflow and cleaning dust can also reduce the cooler’s workload. Lowering a power target or undervolting may reduce heat on some systems, but those are separate tuning steps that should be tested carefully for stability. They are not guaranteed to improve every card or workload.

Warranty rules depend on the manufacturer, product, region, and what was changed or damaged. Manufacturer warnings about damage from overclocking do not mean that a fan-curve change automatically voids a warranty. Keep fan tuning separate from changes to clocks, voltage, or power if your aim is only to improve cooling.
