Google Slides can crop and mask images, apply preset recolor effects, adjust opacity, brightness and contrast, and add borders or shadows. Eligible accounts also have Gemini-powered tools to remove or replace a background, expand an image, or edit it with a prompt. These are presentation-focused tools, not a full photo-editing suite: detailed retouching, selective edits and precise color work are better done in a dedicated editor.
The available controls depend on whether you use Slides on a computer or mobile device, and Gemini tools also depend on your account and plan. On desktop, select an image and open Format options for its appearance adjustments. Crop and mask controls are in the toolbar. Older tutorials may call the sidebar Image options; Google’s current help uses Format options.

Crop or mask an image
Crop on a computer
- Open the presentation and select the image.
- Click Crop image in the toolbar.
- Drag the blue handles to set the visible area.
- Press Enter or click elsewhere on the slide to finish.
Use a crop to trim unwanted edges or tighten a composition. If you want a different part of the photo, reopen the crop control and reposition the image within the crop area. When resizing an image rather than cropping it, drag a corner handle to preserve its proportions and avoid distortion.

Mask an image into a shape
- Select the image.
- Click the arrow beside Crop image.
- Choose a shape, such as a circle or rounded shape.
- Use the colored handles to adjust the framing.
Cropping changes the visible bounds; masking puts the image inside a shape-shaped boundary. The photo remains an image, not an editable vector illustration. A mask is useful for profile pictures, thumbnails and consistent image grids. If you choose the right shape but see the wrong part of the photo, adjust the image’s position inside the mask.
Recolor, fade, brighten or adjust contrast
On desktop, select the image and open Format options. Expand Recolor for a preset treatment, or expand Adjustments for Opacity, Brightness and Contrast.
- Recolor: Apply a preset to make an image sit more comfortably in a presentation palette. The documented presets are not a substitute for precise hue, saturation, channel or selective-color controls in a photo editor.
- Opacity: Fade the entire image so slide content behind it shows through. This can make a photo less dominant or create a watermark-like effect. It does not make only the background transparent.
- Brightness: Lighten a dark image or darken one that competes with text. Too much adjustment can wash out highlights or obscure shadow detail.
- Contrast: Increase or reduce the visual separation between light and dark areas. Strong changes can make an image harsh; small adjustments are usually easier to read alongside slide text.
If you need to make only one part of a photo transparent, use background removal if Gemini is available, or prepare the image in an external editor. For text over a photo, a semi-transparent slide shape behind the text is often a more predictable solution than fading the whole image.

Add a border or shadow
With the image selected, use the toolbar’s border controls to choose a color, weight and dash style. A thin border can define an image against a busy slide; a theme color can reinforce a presentation’s visual system. Heavy borders can distract unless they are an intentional graphic element.

Drop-shadow controls are documented in Google’s Android image-formatting instructions, and their location may vary across interfaces. If available, select the image, open its formatting controls, choose Drop shadow, turn on Apply drop shadow and adjust the offered settings. Use a subtle shadow for separation rather than making the image appear to float without purpose. Google’s Android image-editing help documents the mobile controls.
Reset an edited image
On desktop, right-click the image and choose Reset image. Google describes this as returning the edited image to the original photo inserted in the presentation. It is useful after several adjustments have gone too far. It should not be treated as a way to undo separate slide objects or unrelated layout changes; if you replaced the source image, keep or reinsert the original file as needed.
Gemini image editing: remove, replace or expand
Google’s Gemini-enabled tools go beyond ordinary formatting. Depending on account eligibility and availability, selecting an image may expose Edit image options for background removal, prompt-based changes or image expansion. Google says these capabilities require an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, and feature access and limits vary. Check Google’s Gemini feature-availability information if you do not see the controls.

Remove a background
On a computer, select the image, click Edit image, then choose Remove background, if offered. This attempts to separate a subject from its background, which is different from reducing opacity. It can help create a product or portrait cutout, but inspect the edges carefully: hair, transparent objects, thin lines, shadows and low-contrast boundaries can be difficult to separate cleanly.

Replace a background or make a prompt-based edit
Select an image and choose Edit image. Enter a description of the change, click Create, and review the result. Google’s workflow lets you choose Replace with image to replace the original; where the option is available, a menu beside it can let you insert the result separately or as a background. Preserve the original or duplicate the slide before accepting a replacement.
Specific prompts are easier to evaluate than vague ones. State what should stay unchanged, describe the new setting and lighting, and mention composition or space needed for slide text. For example: Keep the product unchanged. Replace the background with a softly lit studio surface in blue and white. Leave clear space on the left for a headline. Generated results can alter details or produce inaccurate content. Preview them, and do not present invented visual additions as documentary evidence. Google notes that Gemini may not support every request and can generate inaccurate or inappropriate results in its editing help.
Expand an image
Expansion can generate additional background area to help reframe an image for a different aspect ratio or leave room for text. It may be useful when adapting a portrait-oriented image to a wider slide layout, but the newly filled areas are AI-generated—not recovered details from the original photograph. Google describes the feature in its announcement about image editing in Slides and Vids. It is not a guaranteed image-resolution enhancer.
What changes on Android, iPhone and iPad?
Google’s Android instructions cover crop, mask, recolor, adjustments, borders and drop shadows. The controls may be arranged in condensed menus rather than matching the desktop sidebar exactly; select the image and inspect its formatting controls.

The Slides app on iPhone and iPad can edit presentations, but Google’s retrieved iOS help does not document the same full image-editing sequence as its desktop and Android pages. Select the image and check the crop or formatting controls available in your version of the app. For the fullest documented workflow, use Slides on a computer. Slides is a good place to make an image fit a layout, tone it down, frame it, or add simple styling. Use a dedicated image editor first when you need precise object selection, healing or cloning, blur or pixelation to conceal details, sharpening, noise reduction, lens correction, advanced color grading, layered compositing or a carefully controlled transparent PNG. Slides’ documented recolor and adjustment controls are presentation-oriented, not a replacement for those editing workflows.
If an image belongs behind all slide content, consider Slide → Change background rather than inserting it as an ordinary image object. Google documents adding an image background to one slide or the presentation in its background and layout help. The documented file types for a slide background are GIF, JPG and PNG, and the background image must be under 50 MB; that limit applies to slide backgrounds, not necessarily every image inserted as a normal object.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Format options is missing: Make sure you selected an image rather than a group, shape or slide background. Press Escape to exit group selection, then select the image again. If needed, ungroup objects or try on a computer.
- Opacity is missing: Confirm that the selected object is an image. Image opacity appears under Format options → Adjustments on desktop; a shape’s fill transparency is a different control.
- The crop or mask shows the wrong area: Reopen crop or mask controls and reposition the image inside the visible frame.
- Gemini controls are missing: Feature access depends on an eligible plan, account, platform and rollout. Check the availability guidance rather than assuming every Slides account has the feature.
- The AI result has bad edges or changed details: Compare it with the original, try a more specific prompt, or undo and use the original. Avoid relying on generated changes where visual accuracy is critical.
- The image looks blurry after enlargement: Ordinary resizing cannot restore detail absent from a low-resolution source. Try a higher-resolution original. Gemini expansion can add generated background area, but it does not guarantee sharper original subject details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make an image transparent in Google Slides?
Yes. On desktop, select the image and open Format options → Adjustments → Opacity. This fades the whole image; it does not selectively remove its background.

Can I crop an image into a circle?
Yes. Select the image, click the arrow beside Crop image, and choose a circular mask. Adjust the framing with the handles.
Can I blur part of an image in Google Slides?
Slides’ documented image controls do not provide a selective blur tool. Blur or pixelate sensitive areas in an image editor before inserting the image.
Why can’t I see Gemini image editing?
