Use an enum in a getter or setter exactly as you would any other Java reference type: declare the field with the enum type, return that type from getX(), and accept it in setX(...).

}The important design question is whether the enum-valued property should be mutable, nullable, or changed only through domain-specific operations.
1. Declare the enum
An enum defines a closed set of named constants:
public enum OrderStatus {
PENDING,
PAID,
SHIPPED,
CANCELLED
}Use constants with the enum type, such as OrderStatus.PAID. Enums are class-like Java types: they can contain constructors, fields, and methods, and each constant is a shared instance represented by an implicitly declared public static final field. See Oracle’s enum guide and the Java Language Specification.
2. Store the enum in another class
The usual meaning of “an enum in a getter and setter” is a class with an enum-valued property:

}Keep the field private and expose controlled methods. Java does not require every field to have accessors, but getStatus() and setStatus(...) follow JavaBean conventions used by many frameworks.
Using the class
Order order = new Order();
order.setStatus(OrderStatus.PAID);
if (order.getStatus() == OrderStatus.PAID) {
System.out.println("The order has been paid.");
}Compare enum constants with ==. This works because each declared constant is a unique, fixed instance; enum constants are not strings.
3. Choose a default and define your null policy
An uninitialized enum field defaults to null. That can be valid when “not classified” has meaning, but accidental nulls often surface later in a switch or comparison. Set a meaningful default when one exists:

this.status = Objects.requireNonNull(status, "status must not be null");

}Add import java.util.Objects;. Objects.requireNonNull throws NullPointerException and clearly states that null violates the method contract. If your API intentionally treats null as an invalid argument value, an IllegalArgumentException with a clear message is another consistent policy. Do not silently mix policies.
4. A setter may need to enforce transitions
A generic setter permits every non-null state change, which may be wrong for a domain object:

if (status == OrderStatus.CANCELLED) {
throw new IllegalStateException("A cancelled order cannot change status");

status = newStatus;
}When transitions have business meaning, methods such as markPaid(), ship(), and cancel() are clearer than a broadly permissive setter:

}Use a plain setter for data-transfer or framework-oriented classes; prefer domain operations when they must enforce workflow rules.

If the value cannot change after construction, omit the setter and make the field final:
public final class User {

}A record is a concise alternative:
public record User(Role role) {
public User {
Objects.requireNonNull(role, "role must not be null");
}
}Record accessors use role(), not getRole(). That is valid Java, but it is not the conventional JavaBean naming pattern.

6. Properties inside the enum itself
The enum declaration can also have associated data and its own getter:

}String code = Size.MEDIUM.getCode(); // "M"Prefer immutable fields in enums. A setter would mutate the shared Size.MEDIUM instance for every caller that references it. The set of constants is fixed, but fields declared inside an enum are not automatically immutable unless you make them final.
7. Use the enum type in method signatures
Keep domain code strongly typed:
public void setPriority(Priority priority)

account.setStatus(AccountStatus.valueOf(input.trim().toUpperCase(Locale.ROOT)));valueOf matches the declared name exactly and throws IllegalArgumentException for unsupported input. For user-controlled text, normalize deliberately and handle failure:

return Optional.empty();
}name() is the Java identifier, while toString() may be overridden for display. For API or database values, define an explicit stable field such as code; do not rely on toString() or ordinal(). ordinal() is only the declaration position and changes if constants are inserted or reordered.
8. JavaBean names and framework behavior
For a property named orderStatus, use:
public OrderStatus getOrderStatus()
public void setOrderStatus(OrderStatus orderStatus)isX() conventionally identifies a boolean property. Do not call an enum getter isStatus(); bean introspection may interpret it incorrectly. JavaBean conventions are documented in Oracle’s field and property metadata guide.
A getter does not automatically control JSON, database, or form serialization. Frameworks may use bean properties, fields, constructors, annotations, or custom converters. In persistence systems, property access and field access are separate strategies; check the framework’s configuration before assuming a setter will be called. See Oracle’s JPA overview.

- Declare the field as the enum type, not as a string.
- Use a private field with

- Reject null at construction or setter boundaries when the invariant requires a value.
- Use domain methods for important state transitions.
- Omit setters for immutable objects; use a constructor, final field, or record.
- Keep enum-associated data final and expose getters rather than mutable setters.
- Parse external strings at the boundary and handle unsupported values.
- Persist explicit stable codes, never
ordinal().
