Important: The old native-install recipe for Koel on Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 is a legacy procedure, not a sound setup for a new public-facing server. Current Koel requires PHP 8.2 or newer; source builds also require Node.js 20 or newer and pnpm. The safer choice is to move Koel to a currently supported operating system. If you must keep an old host, isolate the application and test compatibility rather than assuming a current Koel release supports it. See Koel’s current requirements and Ubuntu’s release lifecycle dates.
What Koel does—and what this guide covers
Koel is an open-source web application for streaming your own music collection. Its server/API is built around Laravel, with a Vue.js client. You provide the music files and storage; a browser or compatible client connects to Koel’s web interface. It is not a commercial music catalogue. Streaming behavior depends in part on the web server and how the music directory is mounted. See the Koel project and streaming documentation.
This page explains current installation choices, then records the historical Ubuntu procedure for administrators reproducing an old installation. The old commands are not a recommended route to a current deployment.
Are Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 still suitable?
Security warning: Both releases are past standard support. Ubuntu 16.04’s standard support ended in April 2021 and its listed Ubuntu Pro/ESM coverage ended in April 2026. Ubuntu 18.04’s standard support ended in June 2023; its ESM coverage is listed through April 2028. ESM is extended maintenance, not a reason to treat an obsolete operating system as a good foundation for a new internet-facing application. Check Ubuntu’s release lifecycle table for the distinctions.

For a new Koel server, install a supported Ubuntu release or another maintained Linux distribution. Avoid trying to make an obsolete base current by layering third-party PHP, Node.js, and package repositories onto it. If an existing host cannot be upgraded, treat it as a constrained legacy system: limit network exposure, maintain a patching plan, and test the chosen deployment in isolation. Docker separates application dependencies from the host, but it does not patch the host kernel or restore operating-system support.
What current Koel requires
- Runtime: PHP 8.2 or newer, plus the required PHP extensions.
- Database: Koel lists MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite among its tested options.
- Source build tools: Composer, Git, Node.js 20 or newer, pnpm, and Vite+.
- Production web serving: Apache, nginx, or Caddy should serve Koel’s
public/directory; do not expose Laravel’s development server as the public endpoint.
These are current Koel requirements, not proof that every Koel release or bundled binary will run on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04. Consult the current installation guide for the release you select.
Choose an installation route
| Situation | Route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| New deployment on a supported OS; want fewer host dependencies | Standalone binary | Simple single-server model; still verify architecture and OS compatibility. |
| Want repeatable application and database services | Official Docker setup | Requires container administration and persistent volumes; the host still needs maintenance. |
| Prefer a conventional PHP web-root deployment | Precompiled archive | Host must have a suitable PHP runtime and Composer. |
| Modifying Koel itself | Build from source | Requires the full current PHP and frontend toolchain. |
| Reproducing a historical setup | Legacy Koel release in a disposable, isolated environment | Old dependencies may be unavailable or unsafe; unsuitable for public exposure. |
Standalone binary: simplest host-runtime footprint
Koel’s standalone distribution bundles FrankenPHP, Caddy, the PHP runtime, and the compiled application. It can avoid installing system PHP, Composer, or Node.js on the host. The official guide’s example extracts an archive and starts Koel on port 8000:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
tar -xzf koel-franken-v9.3.2-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
cd koel-franken-v9.3.2-linux-x86_64
./koel php-server --listen :8000
The version shown is the documentation example, not a recommendation to install that release. Select the appropriate current release and archive from Koel’s official materials. Before using this route on an old host, verify CPU architecture, libc compatibility, service-manager behavior, file permissions, and operation in a test environment; Koel’s documentation does not guarantee support for every Ubuntu 16.04/18.04 installation. See the standalone binary guide for configuration, media path, and service details.
Docker: repeatable services, not an OS upgrade
The official Koel Docker repository provides Compose examples for MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL. For example, the repository documents a MySQL Compose launch in this form:
docker compose -f docker-compose.mysql.yml up -d
A PostgreSQL example is:
docker compose -f docker-compose.postgres.yml up -d
The image does not include a database, so use the supplied database service or provide a separate compatible database. Change example passwords and secrets, persist database data and Koel configuration, and mount the music directory at the path Koel is configured to read. First-run initialization runs koel:init unless skipped; it performs migrations, generates an APP_KEY, and creates the initial administrator. The repository lists a default first-login account: change its password immediately, and preserve the generated key and configuration across container recreation. See the official Koel Docker repository.
Precompiled archive: conventional PHP deployment
The archive route is suited to a maintained server that already has the required PHP runtime and Composer. Koel’s current instructions include:
composer koel:init -- --no-assets
Follow the configuration wizard, then use php artisan serve only for a local verification instance. The documented test address is http://localhost:8000. For production, configure a supported web server to serve the application’s public/ directory instead. Details and version-specific instructions are in the getting-started guide.
Build from source: for development or customization
Use source installation when you intend to modify Koel, not as a workaround for an old host. The basic repository and dependency steps are:
git clone https://github.com/koel/koel.git .
composer install
pnpm install
Current source instructions use composer koel:init and the modern Node.js/pnpm toolchain. Follow the current development guide; do not mix current source with the historical Yarn and Node.js 8 instructions below.
What the historical Ubuntu procedure did
Legacy compatibility procedure — not recommended for public deployment. The old tutorial targeted Koel v3.7.2 and used MariaDB, PHP 7.2, Node.js 8, Yarn, Composer, and the command php artisan koel:init. Those dependencies do not describe current Koel, and package repositories, TLS endpoints, Composer behavior, and old dependencies may no longer work as they did when the tutorial was written. The historical recipe is documented at Geek Rewind’s Ubuntu 16.04/18.04 tutorial.

For archival reference, its package-install commands included:
sudo apt update
sudo apt-get install mariadb-server mariadb-client
sudo apt install php7.2 php7.2-cli php7.2-common
php7.2-mbstring php7.2-xml php7.2-mysql
php7.2-curl php7.2-zip
The old procedure installed Composer and Node.js 8 this way:
curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer |
sudo php -- --install-dir=/usr/local/bin --filename=composer
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_8.x | sudo -E bash -
sudo apt install -y nodejs
It then checked out Koel and initialized it:
git clone https://github.com/phanan/koel
cd koel
git checkout -b v3.7.2
composer install
php artisan koel:init
That checkout command creates a local branch from the current checkout; it is not an explicit checkout of a tag. For a controlled historical reproduction, a tag-based form is clearer:
git fetch --tags
git checkout v3.7.2
Verify that the historical tag exists in the repository state you use. Reproduction should happen in a disposable virtual machine or similarly isolated environment with dependencies pinned; do not expose this stack as a public music server.
Database, configuration, and persistence
Before running Koel’s initialization wizard, decide on the database and record the driver, host, port, database name, username, and password. Create a dedicated database user with only the access Koel needs; do not configure the application with MariaDB’s root account. Restrict database access to localhost or the application network when possible. A setup utility such as mysql_secure_installation does not replace least-privilege database configuration.
For non-Docker installations, use the wizard to set database and administrator details, choose a strong unique administrator password, and keep the generated .env file and APP_KEY safe. Back up the database and configuration before upgrades. For Docker, persist the configuration and database volume; losing APP_KEY across recreation can create configuration or encryption problems. Keep the music library separate from Koel’s writable application storage.
Put the web server in front
For production, point Apache, nginx, or Caddy at /path/to/koel/public, not the project root. Connect PHP-FPM or the selected bundled runtime correctly, enable URL rewriting, and configure HTTPS before exposing the service to the internet. Koel’s repository includes example nginx and Caddy configuration, but adapt the example to the selected release and deployment rather than copying an unverified virtual-host file.
- Expose only required service ports through the firewall.
- For a standalone process or container listening on port 8000, use a reverse proxy if you need a public hostname and TLS termination.
- Check proxy timeouts, buffering, and range requests if playback of large files fails.
- Do not use
php artisan serveas the production-facing web server.
See the Koel production setup guidance for supported web-server context.
Recommended Free Tools
Point Koel at the music library
Use an absolute media path, for example /srv/music. For the standalone distribution, the media location can be set with MEDIA_PATH; other deployment methods use their corresponding configuration and mount paths. The runtime user must be able to traverse every parent directory and read the files. Avoid making the entire library world-writable or applying chmod -R 777.
- Mount a disk or network share before Koel starts, and make the service depend on that mount where applicable.
- In Docker, confirm the host directory is mounted at the same path configured inside the container.
- Use stable ownership and group permissions; do not repeatedly change permissions recursively as a troubleshooting shortcut.
- Keep backups of the library separate from the application database and configuration.
An empty library often means the path is wrong, the mount was not ready, the runtime cannot read it, or no scan has run—not that the audio files have been imported incorrectly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a streaming method
Koel configures streaming through STREAMING_METHOD. The documented options include PHP file reading and x-sendfile; the latter applies to Apache, including Apache behind an nginx proxy, and requires corresponding web-server module installation and path configuration. The exact third method and its compatibility depend on the current Koel documentation and selected release, so confirm the current streaming guide rather than guessing a setting name.

Choose based on your topology: PHP streaming is the straightforward native path; server-assisted file delivery can be preferable for larger files when the web server is configured to serve the media path. In each case, verify permissions, reverse-proxy behavior, and playback with the actual browser or client. A file being readable by the server does not guarantee every client can play its encoding, and this configuration should not be treated as proof of universal format or transcoding support.

- Complete first-run setup. For archive/source installs, run the documented initialization wizard and store its generated configuration securely. Docker performs first-run initialization unless configured to skip it.
- Sign in and secure the administrator account. Use a unique strong password; if using Docker’s documented initial credentials, replace them immediately.
- Confirm database connectivity. Check the selected driver, host, port, database existence, and user grants.
- Run a library scan. Confirm the configured absolute path exists from Koel’s perspective and is readable by its runtime user.
- Test playback. Try a small file, then a larger one, and verify playback through the same proxy and HTTPS route users will use.
- Restart and retest. Confirm that configuration, database state, and media mounts persist after service or container restart.
- Check scheduled work and logs. Confirm the scheduler is active and inspect Koel’s application logs when scans or background tasks do not run.
Koel documents scheduler setup through its CLI guidance. The Laravel scheduler form is:
* * * * * cd /path-to-koel-installation && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1
Do not copy that line unchanged to every installation: the executable and scheduler setup differ among Docker, source/archive, and standalone deployments. In particular, a standalone binary deployment may not use host PHP. Consult Koel’s CLI and scheduler documentation.
Troubleshooting
apt cannot find the old PHP packages
Repositories for an obsolete release may have moved or stopped serving the package set; the package names may also be wrong for a newer Ubuntu release. Do not add random third-party repositories to force PHP 7.2 onto a system. Upgrade the OS for a current deployment. For a historical reproduction, use a disposable VM or container with archived packages and a pinned dependency set.
Composer reports an incompatible PHP version
Current Koel requires PHP 8.2 or newer. Do not bypass Composer’s platform checks. Use a supported runtime, or select a genuinely compatible historical Koel release only for controlled legacy use. See current requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The frontend build fails
Common causes are old Node.js, missing pnpm, mixing the historical Yarn/Node.js 8 workflow with current source, or insufficient build tooling. Confirm the selected release’s requirements; if you do not need to modify source, use the precompiled archive or standalone distribution instead.
The library appears empty
- Confirm the configured path is absolute and exists inside Koel’s runtime environment.
- Check that a mounted disk is mounted before the service starts.
- Ensure the runtime can traverse parent directories and read the files.
- Run a library scan and check logs for path or permission errors.
The database connection fails
Check the driver, hostname, port, database name, and user permissions. With Docker Compose, use the database service name rather than localhost when the application is in a separate container. In a bundled runtime, localhost may resolve to a MySQL socket rather than a TCP connection; consult the standalone guide for its database configuration notes.
The application key changes after container recreation
Persist the configuration containing APP_KEY or provide a stable key through deployment configuration. Do not allow an ephemeral container filesystem to become the only copy of application configuration; the Docker documentation explains initialization and persistence considerations.
The scheduler does not run
Check the scheduler mechanism for your install type, its working directory, the correct PHP or bundled executable path, file permissions, and application logs. Docker, standalone, and host-PHP deployments do not all use the same cron command.

Small files play but large files fail
Investigate PHP execution limits, proxy buffering and timeouts, server-side file delivery configuration, range-request handling, and permissions on the media path. Test through the complete reverse-proxy path rather than only on localhost.
Upgrade or move an existing Koel installation
Back up the database, .env, application storage, and media separately before changing the OS or Koel release. Follow the upgrade instructions and release notes for the target Koel version; do not assume migrations can be reversed. Koel’s getting-started documentation says there is no built-in downgrade mechanism and recommends restoring a database backup if a downgrade is necessary. For a constrained legacy host, a fresh supported server with copied media and a carefully migrated database is generally a cleaner path than rebuilding the old system around modern runtimes.
