Use CapCut’s Text-to-Speech feature to turn a written script into narration. Add a text layer, select it, choose an available voice, generate the speech, then adjust the resulting audio on your timeline. The control is available on CapCut mobile, Desktop, and Web, although its label and location can vary by version, region, account, and platform.
This guide covers the normal built-in narrator first, then explains custom voice cloning, script preparation, editing, pricing, rights, and fixes when Text-to-Speech is missing or fails.
What “AI voice” means in CapCut
In most CapCut searches, “AI voice” means Text-to-Speech (TTS): a computer-generated voice reads text that you type. CapCut may also show related tools, but they are different:
- AI voiceover: the generated narration placed over your video.
- Voice cloning or custom voice: a synthesized voice modeled on a recorded speaker. Its availability is not guaranteed for every account or device.
- Voice changer: effects applied to recorded audio; it does not create narration from a script.
CapCut describes TTS on its Help Center and promotes AI narration through its AI Text-to-Speech page.

Before you start
- A CapCut project containing video, images, or other media.
- A script written for speaking, not a complete article pasted into one enormous text box.
- An updated CapCut app, Desktop installation, or supported browser.
- An internet connection. Generation can fail when connectivity is weak, and the service may process speech online.
- Awareness that some voices and advanced AI actions may be premium or credit-based.
How to get an AI voice on CapCut mobile
- Open CapCut and create a project or open an existing one.
- Add your video or images.
- Tap Text, then Add text.
- Enter or paste the narration.
- Confirm the text layer, then tap that text clip on the timeline.
- Swipe the bottom toolbar and tap Text-to-Speech.
- Choose an available voice or style. Language, accent, gender, age, and emotional filters may differ by version and region.
- Tap Generate and wait for the audio to appear.
- Play the project and adjust the generated clip’s timing, volume, speed, or pitch where those controls are available.
- Hide or remove the original text layer if you want narration without on-screen words. Keep it visible if it is serving as captions or animated text.
- Export the video.
The text-layer requirement is important: Text-to-Speech normally appears only after a text clip is selected. The official procedure is documented at CapCut Help.
How to do it on CapCut Desktop
- Open CapCut Desktop for Windows or macOS and create or open a project.
- Import your media and add a text layer to the timeline.
- Type or paste the script, then select the text clip.
- Choose Text-to-Speech from the text tools or toolbar.
- Select a voice and, when offered, a language or style.
- Use the preview control if it is shown, then click Generate or Generate speech.
- Wait for processing, then preview the audio.
- Move, trim, and mix the voiceover with your video and music.
- Export the finished project.
Some Desktop builds expose the function through AI tools, AI voice, Text to speech, or AI audio generator instead of the selected-text toolbar. CapCut’s alternate workflow is described at this resource page and its AI audio tool.
How to use CapCut Web
Editor workflow
- Open CapCut Online, sign in, and create or open a project.
- Click Text, add a text box, and enter the script.
- Select the text layer and choose Text-to-Speech.
- Choose a voice and language, then click Generate.
- Preview and adjust the resulting audio before exporting.
Standalone AI-tools workflow
- Sign in to CapCut Web.
- Open AI tools, then choose Text to speech or AI voice.
- Paste or type the script.
- Choose a voice, language, or style.
- Use the short preview if available, then click Generate.
- Download the audio or apply it to a project.

Choose a voice and improve the result
CapCut promotes voices organized by language, accent, gender, age, and emotional or stylistic qualities. The exact list is not universal. Test the voice before committing when a Preview 5 sec control is offered; CapCut documents that preview in its AI audio workflow.
Depending on the interface, speed, pitch, and volume controls appear before generation or in the normal audio editor afterward. CapCut describes these controls at its AI voiceover page and its AI voice reader page.
Write for speech
- Use short sentences and punctuation to create natural pauses.
- Spell out abbreviations that are mispronounced.
- Write numbers in the form you want spoken.
- Test names, URLs, acronyms, product names, and technical terms.
- Split long narration into logical text clips so timing and corrections are manageable.
For example, replace “In this video we’re going to show you how to use CapCut’s TTS feature in 2026 for TikTok YouTube Shorts and Instagram” with “In this video, we’ll show you how to use CapCut’s Text-to-Speech feature. You can use it for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram.”

Sync the narration with video and captions
- Split the script into sections that match scenes.
- Generate separate clips when a paragraph needs different timing or pronunciation.
- Trim silence at the beginning and end of each generated clip.
- Move the audio clip into place rather than stretching it excessively.
- Set the initial timing before changing narration speed.
- Review with captions enabled; CapCut describes timeline and caption syncing in its AI voice reader documentation.
Lower background music while speech is playing, keep narration levels consistent, add brief fades, and check the loudest passages for clipping. Listen through both headphones and a phone speaker.

Can you create a version of your own voice?
CapCut’s public pages say some users can record a few sentences to create a custom or cloned voice. That feature may be restricted by region, language, account, age, platform, or app build, so a normal TTS voice should not be confused with a personal clone. Use cloning only with your own voice or the speaker’s clear permission. Do not deceptively imitate a public figure, coworker, customer, or another person.

Is CapCut AI voice free?
CapCut advertises core Text-to-Speech as free, but it also identifies premium voices and advanced AI voice features that may require Pro or credits. Whether a particular voice is available depends on what your account currently shows.

CapCut says pricing varies by region, device, taxes, promotions, and account, so check the logged-in purchase page rather than relying on a universal price: pricing guidance. Fix missing or failed Text-to-Speech
The Text-to-Speech button is missing
- Add a new text layer and select the text clip itself.
- Look in the bottom toolbar or text toolbar for Text-to-Speech, Text to speech, AI voice, or AI tools.
- Update CapCut, restart the app or browser, and sign in again.
- Try the Web or Desktop editor if the mobile control is unavailable.
- Check whether the requested voice is premium or credit-based.
- If it remains unavailable, contact CapCut support.
Generation fails
- Check the internet connection.
- Shorten the script and remove unusual symbols or unsupported punctuation.
- Try another language or voice.
- Confirm that the text clip is selected.
- Update CapCut and restart the project.
- Generate one short sentence to isolate the problem.
The voice was generated but cannot be heard
- Check whether the audio track or clip is muted or set to zero volume.
- Zoom out and look for audio positioned outside the visible timeline.
- Make sure the generated clip was applied to the project.
- Check the preview device and competing music tracks.

The voice sounds unnatural
Try another accent or style, shorten the text clips, add punctuation, rewrite phrases for speech, correct names phonetically, and adjust speed modestly. For nuanced emotion, comedic timing, specialist pronunciation, or a highly personal channel identity, a human recording may be the better choice.
Commercial use, licensing, and consent
CapCut states that generated audio can be used in commercial projects such as marketing videos and social ads. That statement is subject to the applicable terms and does not automatically grant rights to your script, music, stock footage, templates, logos, or other third-party material. Check whether each asset is marked for commercial use and review the current Materials License Agreement and Terms of Service.
You remain responsible for permission to clone a person’s voice, copyright in the script, publicity and trademark rights, platform disclosure rules, advertising requirements, and avoiding deceptive impersonation. Terms and licensing can change.
