Google Maps has separate language controls for its interface and spoken directions. To change menus and buttons, use Android’s App languages setting if your phone and Maps support it; to change turn-by-turn speech, choose a voice in Maps’ Navigation settings.
Choose the setting that matches what you want:
- Menus and buttons: Android Settings → System → Languages → App languages → Google Maps.
- Spoken directions: Google Maps → profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation settings → Voice selection.
- Map labels and place information: These may follow local-language behavior and are not necessarily changed by either setting.
Change the Google Maps app language
On supported phones, Android lets you choose a language for an individual app without changing the language of the whole device. Google says some of these steps work only on Android 14 and newer, and only apps that support language selection appear in the list.
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Tap System, then Languages.
- Tap App languages.
- Select Google Maps.
- Choose the language you want.
This setting changes the Maps interface, such as menus and buttons. It does not necessarily change the navigation voice, map labels, business names, reviews, or other place information. The exact availability depends on the Android version, the phone’s software, and Maps’ support for that language. Google’s Android app-language instructions describe the feature and its limitations.
If Google Maps is not listed
Your phone may not offer per-app language settings, or Maps may not expose that option on your device. Check for a software update and look for a similarly named menu such as Languages & input; manufacturers can move or rename settings. If no app-specific option is available, changing the phone’s main language may be an alternative for the interface, but it is not required on every device. For spoken directions, use Maps’ separate voice setting below.

Change the language of spoken directions
To change the language used for turn-by-turn guidance, adjust the voice inside Google Maps:
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation settings.
- Under Sound & voice, tap Voice selection.
- Choose the language or voice you want.
Google says navigation uses the device’s default language by default. Changing Voice selection affects spoken guidance; it does not set the language of the entire app. Start a new route to check the result. Available navigation languages and features vary by country, region, and language. Google’s Maps language instructions give the current Android path.

Use different languages for the interface and voice
Because Android’s per-app language setting and Maps’ Voice selection control are separate, you may be able to keep menus in one language and spoken directions in another. Set each option independently, subject to your device, app, and language support. Changing one does not guarantee that the other will change.

The App languages menu may be absent on older Android versions or on some manufacturer-specific software. Check your phone’s language settings for Languages & input or an equivalent section, and install available Android and Google Maps updates. If your device still has no per-app option, its system language may be the only available way to change the Maps interface. The Maps navigation voice can still be set separately when Voice selection is available.

Fix language changes that do not take effect
- Close and reopen Maps. Google recommends restarting an app after changing its language.
- Check your internet connection. Google lists connectivity as a troubleshooting step for app-language changes.
- Update Google Maps through Google Play, then reopen the app.
- Add the desired language as a secondary system language in Android’s language settings, then return to the app-language option and select it again.
- Confirm you changed the right control. Android’s app-language setting affects the interface; Maps’ Voice selection affects spoken navigation.
- Start a fresh route to test a navigation voice change.
- If voice output is missing or sounds wrong, check Android’s text-to-speech settings. Google notes that navigation speech may use the device’s text-to-speech settings. Also check Maps’ guidance volume and whether audio is routed to Bluetooth or another output.
Navigation voice and related features are not available in every country, region, or language, and a language or voice may not be offered for your particular combination. Google’s Android navigation help explains availability and the text-to-speech fallback.
Why map labels may remain in another language
Maps’ interface, spoken guidance, map labels, and place information are different things. Google says Maps may display place names in local languages based on the country or location. Changing the navigation voice does not promise to translate labels, and a translated interface does not necessarily change names or content supplied by businesses. The Android language setting and navigation voice control should not be treated as a universal map-translation switch.
Google Maps Go
If you use Google Maps Go rather than the full Google Maps app, its menus and navigation behavior may differ; navigation may require a separate Navigation for Google Maps Go app. The steps above describe the standard Google Maps Android app. See Google’s Maps Go help page for details about the lighter app.
