To make a new Gmail account, create a Google Account and choose a Gmail address during setup. Go to Google’s account sign-in page, select Create account, then For my personal use and follow the prompts. Google’s labels and verification steps can vary by country, device and account history.
Gmail and Google Accounts: what you’re creating
Gmail is Google’s email service; a Google Account is the broader login that gives you access to Gmail and other Google services, such as Drive, Photos, YouTube and Calendar. When you create a Gmail address, you create a Google Account too. You can also create a Google Account using an existing non-Gmail email address, but that does not give you a new Gmail inbox. Google explains the difference here.
If you already have a Gmail account and only want to use it on a new phone or computer, sign in or add that existing account to the device; you do not need to make another one. Create a second account when you actually want a separate inbox or account identity.
What to have ready
- Your name and date of birth, plus any other personal details the form requests.
- A preferred username and a few alternatives in case your first choice is unavailable.
- A long, unique password that you do not use on another service.
- Access to a phone number or email address if Google asks you to verify one. A recovery phone or email is useful, but is not universally required at signup.
- A stable internet connection and a device with a current browser.
How to create a Gmail account on a computer
- Go to https://accounts.google.com/. If you are signed in to another Gmail account, make sure you start a new signup rather than continuing into the existing one. Google’s Gmail instructions suggest signing out first; a private browser window is another way to keep accounts separate.
- Select Create account, then choose For my personal use. The other choices may include a child account or a work/business account.
- Enter your name and the personal details requested, including your birthday. The exact fields and order can change.
- Choose a Gmail username. If Google says it is unavailable, try one of the alternatives described below.
- Create and confirm a strong, unique password.
- Complete any verification Google presents. A phone number is not a universal requirement, but Google may request phone verification for a particular signup.
- Review and accept Google’s terms and privacy conditions to finish creating the account.
- If Google has not asked for recovery details, add a recovery phone number or email after setup. Keep them current so they can help if you lose access.
- Open Gmail and sign in using your new Gmail address and password.
How to create an account on a phone or tablet
Using a mobile browser
Open a browser such as Safari or Chrome, go to Google’s account sign-in page, and follow the same Create account and personal-use steps as on a computer. Creating the account in a browser is separate from adding it to a mail app or device afterward.

On Android
You can start during Android device setup, or from a Google sign-in screen choose Add account, select Google if asked, and then choose Create account. Android menus vary by manufacturer and software version, so there is no single Settings path that applies to every phone.
On iPhone or iPad
Create the account in Safari or another browser. Then, if you want to use Google’s app, install Gmail and sign in with the account you just created. Installing Gmail or adding an account to the app does not itself create a new address.
How to choose a Gmail username
Google’s current username guidance sets a length of 6–30 characters and allows letters, numbers and periods. A username cannot contain consecutive periods; symbols such as underscores, hyphens and plus signs are not allowed. The names Abuse and Postmaster are reserved. See Google’s username rules.
A name can be rejected because it is already in use, too similar to another username, previously used and deleted, or reserved by Google to help prevent spam or abuse. Google lists these availability limits.

- Try a middle initial, a short number or a meaningful word if your preferred name is taken.
- Choose something you will be comfortable using publicly and professionally; avoid including your full birth date or home address.
- Do not add periods expecting a distinct address: Gmail treats addresses such as [email protected] and [email protected] as the same for delivery.
- A previously deleted username may remain unavailable, so adding dots or waiting may not make it claimable.
Choose carefully: Google says you cannot simply change your Gmail username or address later. See Google’s account guidance.
Do you need a phone number?
Whether Google asks for a phone number can vary; there is no reliable universal promise that you can create an account without one. Google’s basic Gmail setup instructions do not require a number for every signup, but its security and anti-abuse checks may request phone verification depending on factors such as region, device and account-creation history.
If a prompt appears, use a number you control and follow the options shown in Google’s official flow. Avoid disposable or fake numbers: they can make account recovery harder. If verification will not proceed, read the exact message and use the options Google provides rather than repeatedly attempting to create accounts.

How old do you have to be?
In countries without a separate rule listed by Google, the general minimum age to manage a Google Account independently is 13. Some countries set a higher minimum, so check Google’s country-by-country age requirements.

A child below the applicable age may be able to use a supervised Google Account set up by a parent through Family Link, subject to local rules and supervision. This is a different setup from the ordinary personal account flow. Google’s Family Link instructions explain the child-account process.
What to do after signup
- Open Gmail and send a message to an email address you can access.
- Open that other inbox, confirm the message arrived, and reply. This checks that you can send and receive mail.
- Add a recovery email or phone number and make sure the information remains current. Google recommends recovery options to help regain access. Read its account-recovery guidance.
- Save the password securely, ideally in a password manager, and do not reuse it on other services.
- Review Google Account security settings and enable two-step verification or a passkey if available to you.
- Add the account to your phone or other devices if you want convenient access. On shared or public devices, sign out when you are finished.
Common signup problems and fixes
Google says the username is taken or unavailable
Try a meaningful variation, such as a middle initial or short number. A similar, deleted or reserved username may not be available, and adding periods will not create a distinct Gmail address. Check that your choice follows the length and character rules.
The username is not allowed
Check that it is 6–30 characters, uses only permitted characters, and has no consecutive periods. Reserved names such as abuse and postmaster cannot be used.
Google asks for verification or will not verify the account
Follow the prompt shown in the official Google flow and check that any phone number or email you entered is correct and accessible. Verification choices are not available for every account, device or region. If Google reports that it cannot verify the account, avoid generating many duplicate signups; use the stated options or try again later if instructed. Never share a verification code with anyone or send identity or payment information to someone who contacts you outside Google’s official flow. Google describes verification options and limits.

A verification email for an existing address never arrives
This applies when you are creating a Google Account with an existing non-Google email address; it is not proof that every Gmail signup needs an email code. Check the address for typing errors and look in spam, junk and bulk folders. Request a new code or link, and add [email protected] to your contacts if needed. If a link has expired, request a replacement. Do not share the code. Google’s instructions cover verification of an existing email address.
You already have an account, or you forgot the old one
If you are setting up a new device, sign in to or add the account you already use. If you cannot access it, try Google’s account-recovery process before creating a replacement. A new account does not restore the old account’s Gmail, Drive files, Photos, contacts or purchases. Google explains recovery information and account recovery.
A work or school signup is blocked
Your organization may manage accounts separately, use a custom domain, or restrict who can create accounts. Contact its administrator; personal Gmail signup instructions may not apply.

For an individual who wants an address ending in @gmail.com, the personal account flow is the relevant choice. A business may consider Google Workspace if it needs email on its own domain, multiple centrally managed users or organizational administration. Workspace is a separate commercial product; check Google’s current Workspace plans and pricing for your region and billing terms rather than assuming a price or promotion applies everywhere.
