To make web links open in Google Chrome, set Chrome as your device’s default browser. The fastest route is usually to open Chrome and choose More ⋮ → Settings → Default browser → Make default; if your device opens system settings, select Chrome there. The exact steps depend on whether you use Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, or iPhone/iPad.
Chrome must be installed first. Changing the default browser tells your device which app should open ordinary web links from places such as email, messages, and documents. It does not uninstall another browser or automatically move bookmarks, passwords, extensions, or open tabs. Some apps use their own built-in web viewer instead of the system’s default browser.
If Chrome is not installed, get it from Google’s official Chrome download page or your device’s official app store. On a work or school device, an administrator may control browser defaults. Menu names can also vary by operating-system version, language, and device manufacturer.
Set Chrome as the default browser on Windows 11
Use Chrome’s default-browser setting
- Open Chrome.
- Select More ⋮ → Settings → Default browser.
- Select Make default.
- If Windows Settings opens, continue with the steps below.
If Chrome has no Make default button, it may already be the default browser. Google’s Chrome instructions describe this route at Chrome Help.

Set Chrome in Windows Settings
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- In the search field under Set defaults for applications, enter Chrome.
- Select Google Chrome.
- Select Set default beside Make Google Chrome your default browser.
- Review the file-type and link-type associations shown beneath the button if you need to check which ones changed.
Google documents this Windows 11 path in its Chrome default-browser instructions. Some Windows builds show individual associations rather than one button. If HTTP or HTTPS still points to another browser, select that association in Chrome’s Default apps entry and choose Chrome. Chrome Enterprise describes the http and https handlers used for default-browser configuration in its default-browser policy documentation.
Set Chrome as the default browser on Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- Under Web browser, select the browser currently listed.
- Choose Google Chrome.
On older Windows 10 builds, the page may be under Settings → System → Default apps. Google’s documented Windows 10 route is in Chrome Help. This is legacy guidance: Windows 10 has passed its mainstream consumer lifecycle, and the exact options can vary by build.

Set Chrome as the default browser on Mac
Use Chrome’s setting
- Open Chrome.
- Select More ⋮ → Settings → Default browser.
- Select Make default.
If the button is absent, Chrome may already be the default browser.

Use macOS settings
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Open Desktop & Dock.
- Find Default web browser and select Google Chrome.
The location varies across macOS releases. Older versions use System Preferences → General → Default web browser; Microsoft describes the newer and older locations in its Mac browser-setting guidance.

Set Chrome as the default browser on Linux
- Open Chrome.
- Select More ⋮ → Settings → Default browser.
- Select Make default.
Google includes Linux in its desktop Chrome instructions. If the setting does not change the system association, open your Linux desktop environment’s Default Applications settings and choose Chrome for web browsing. The menu path differs among desktop environments, so there is no single universal path.
Set Chrome as the default browser on Android
- Open the phone or tablet’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app, then select Chrome.
Google gives this standard route in its Android Help instructions. Labels and placement vary by manufacturer and software version. If you cannot find the option, use Settings search for Default apps or Browser app. Google also provides Chrome-specific Android instructions.

Set Chrome as the default browser on iPhone or iPad
- Install Chrome from the App Store, or update it if already installed.
- Open Chrome and tap More ⋮ → Settings → Default Browser.
- Tap Go to Settings….
- Tap Default Browser App, then select Chrome.
Google’s default-browser help says this setting requires iOS 14 or later and recommends updating Chrome if the option is missing. Its current Chrome setup page lists iOS 17 and later as the supported operating-system range for the current app. Those statements describe different things—the default-setting capability and the current app’s listed support—so do not treat them as interchangeable. See Google’s default-browser steps and its current iPhone and iPad setup page. On iPhone and iPad, links open in Chrome whenever possible; some apps may open links in an in-app viewer instead.
Check that Chrome is the default
- Open an ordinary web link from an email, message, or document. It should launch Chrome.
- On a computer, open Chrome’s Settings → Default browser page to see whether Chrome reports itself as the default.
- On Windows 11, inspect Chrome’s listed link associations if a particular kind of link still opens elsewhere.
If links still open in another browser
- Check the operating-system setting. If Chrome’s Make default button sent you to system settings, finish the selection there. On Windows, check the HTTP and HTTPS associations in particular.
- Update Chrome. A missing control can indicate an outdated app; on iPhone or iPad, Google specifically recommends updating Chrome when the default-browser option is unavailable.
- Check how the app opens the link. Some apps use an embedded browser, which may not follow the system default.
- Consider device management. If the selection reverts on a work or school device, an administrator may be enforcing browser associations. Contact IT rather than repeatedly changing the setting.
- Restart Chrome and test another external link. This helps distinguish a setting that did not apply from an app that keeps links in its own viewer.
Default browser and default search engine are different
The browser is the app that opens websites; the search engine is the service Chrome uses when you search from its address bar. Setting Chrome as the default browser does not necessarily select Google Search. To change the search engine, open Chrome → Settings → Search engine.

Change back to another browser
Use the same operating-system default-app settings and select another installed browser, such as Edge, Safari, Firefox, or a different option available on your device. Changing the default does not remove Chrome or the other browser.
