A blog entry is one individual piece of content published within a blog. It is also commonly called a blog post or simply a post. A blog is the publication or collection; an entry is one item in it.
What does “blog entry” mean?
A blog entry is a discrete piece of content published as part of a blog. It may have its own URL, appear in a feed or archive, and be edited independently. A blog often displays newer entries before older ones, although publishers can feature or reorder posts.
An entry can be a personal reflection, tutorial, review, announcement, interview, recipe, case study, or another focused piece of content. Blogs are used by individuals and by businesses, nonprofits, professionals, schools, and publishers. The format describes where the content is published, not a particular subject or writing style.

Blog entry, blog post, article, and webpage: what is the difference?
- Blog: The publication, website, or section that contains entries. In casual speech, “I published a blog” may mean “I published a blog post.”
- Blog entry or blog post: One item in that publication. “Blog post” is the more common term in publishing software and marketing; WordPress.com labels individual items “posts.”
- Article: A broad form of written content. A blog entry may be an article, but a short update can be a blog entry without being a conventional article. A formal, extensively researched article can also be published as a blog entry.
- Webpage: The general format of a page on a website. A published blog entry is a webpage, but a homepage, About page, Contact page, or product page is not usually a blog entry.
WordPress.com distinguishes posts, which make up a blog, from pages such as Home, About, and Contact. See its guide to pages alongside its guide to posts.
What does a blog entry usually contain?
There is no compulsory template. A short announcement, photo essay, or audio-led post may omit elements found in a long guide. Common elements include:

- Title: Identifies the subject and sets an accurate expectation for the reader.
- Byline: Names the writer, organization, or publication, if shown.
- Publication and update dates: Help readers judge freshness. “Published” means when the entry first went live; “updated” should signal a meaningful later change rather than disguise an old entry as new.
- Opening and body: The opening establishes the question or purpose; the body provides the explanation, story, evidence, opinion, or instructions. Headings, examples, steps, lists, quotes, or tables can make it easier to use.
- Media and links: Images, video, audio, and links can illustrate or extend the entry. Use media you have permission to publish, give images useful alternative text where appropriate, and credit material when needed.
- Categories and tags: Help organize posts, though their exact behavior depends on the platform. Use them to aid navigation rather than create confusing, thin archives.
- Comments or responses: Optional discussion features. A comment is a response attached to an entry, not usually an entry itself.
- Permalink: The stable URL for the individual item. Changing it can break existing links unless the old address is redirected correctly.
- Ending or next step: May answer the opening question, invite discussion, or point to a relevant next action.
These are conventions, not rules every entry must follow. Educational writing guidance, for example, describes common features such as a title, author, date, and paragraphs, but actual layouts vary by topic and platform: writing reference (PDF).

How to write and publish a blog entry
- Choose a reader and purpose. Decide who the entry is for, what question it answers, and what a reader should understand or do afterward.
- Focus the topic. Narrow a broad subject to a question you can answer clearly. For example, “gardening” is broad; “how to grow basil indoors in a small apartment” gives the entry a more useful focus.
- Select a format and outline. Match the structure to the task: steps for a tutorial, criteria for a review, or context and evidence for a case study. A simple outline can include a title, direct answer or main claim, supporting explanation, examples, limitations, and a relevant next step.
- Draft for clarity. Use plain language, informative headings, focused paragraphs, and concrete examples. Define specialist terms when they first appear; remove material that does not help the intended reader.
- Add useful support. Include links, evidence, images, captions, or other media where they improve understanding. Check image rights and provide alternative text where appropriate.
- Review the details. Check names, dates, links, instructions, versions, prices, safety claims, and screenshots. Recheck information that can change, and remove typos, placeholders, and unfinished sections.
- Preview and publish. Confirm the title, formatting, links, images, visibility, and URL in a preview before publishing. Platform controls differ, so follow the instructions for your chosen service.
- Maintain the entry. Correct errors, replace broken links, and revise obsolete instructions. Add an update note when a material change matters to readers. Before changing a published URL, arrange a redirect from the old address.
Publishing a post on WordPress.com
On WordPress.com, the documented workflow is to open the dashboard, select Posts, choose Add new post, enter a title, and add content in the editor. You can optionally set a featured image, excerpt, and other settings, then select Publish, review the pre-publish checks, and confirm Publish again. The platform also supports drafts, previews, scheduling, revisions, and post settings. Publishing may place a public post on the blog page or distribute it to Reader feeds, subscriber email, or connected social profiles depending on the site’s settings and integrations. See the current WordPress.com post documentation; other platforms use different controls.
How to judge whether an entry is useful
- Relevance: Does it answer the question implied by its title?
- Accuracy and trust: Are claims supported and appropriately qualified? Are authorship, dates, sources, uncertainty, and commercial relationships clear where relevant?
- Original value: Does it add explanation, evidence, examples, analysis, or experience rather than merely repeat a definition?
- Readability and structure: Can the intended audience scan it and follow its organization?
- Accessibility: Can people using different devices and assistive technologies access the content?
- Maintainability: Can the publisher update it without misleading readers or breaking links?
Common beginner mistakes
- Assuming every blog is a diary: Personal writing is one format; professional and organizational publications use blog entries too. Indeed’s blog-writing guidance discusses business as well as personal uses.
- Delaying the answer: For a definition or tutorial, give the direct answer early instead of making readers search through a long introduction.
- Using headings as decoration: Headings should describe the content that follows and help navigation.
- Stuffing in search phrases: Use wording that fits naturally; repetition makes an entry harder to read.
- Making an old post look new without explanation: Distinguish a substantial update from the original publication.
- Assuming online images are free to reuse: Check permission and licensing before publishing.
- Leaving commercial relationships undisclosed: Clearly identify relevant sponsorships, affiliate links, gifted products, or paid placements in line with applicable rules and platform policies.
- Treating publishing platforms as interchangeable: Features for URLs, comments, email, analytics, ownership, and export differ.
- Publishing AI-generated text without review: The publisher remains responsible for accuracy, originality, privacy, citations, and suitability for the audience.
Special cases: private, scheduled, short, or multimedia entries
A blog entry need not be public, conversational, text-heavy, or long. Depending on the platform, it may be private, password-protected, members-only, or scheduled for later publication. It may consist mainly of photographs, video, audio, or a downloadable resource. Comments are not required, and syndicating an entry in email or an app does not necessarily create a separate post. Visibility, scheduling, and syndication are platform settings, not what defines an entry.
