On a computer, open the document and choose File → Page setup. Select Pages, enter the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right values under Margins, then click OK. If you do not see margin fields, the document may be in Pageless mode or you may be using the mobile app.
Change all four margins on a computer
- Open the Google Doc in a desktop browser.
- Click File and choose Page setup.
- At the top of the dialog, select Pages. Margin controls are page-layout settings and are not available in Pageless format.
- Enter the required measurements in the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right fields.
- Click OK and inspect the page layout.
Page setup changes the printable text area. It does not change font size, paragraph spacing, or the indentation of individual paragraphs. Google documents the current desktop workflow here: Google Docs page setup.
To use these settings for new documents, choose Set as default in the Page setup dialog. This does not retroactively change documents you already created, and a school or workplace template may override the practical workflow.

Adjust the left and right margins with the ruler
The horizontal ruler is useful for a quick visual adjustment:

- Make the ruler visible from the View menu if it is hidden.
- Click in the relevant text or select the section you are editing.
- Find the page-margin boundary on the horizontal ruler and drag its margin marker inward to make the margin larger, or outward to make the text area wider.
The ruler also contains first-line and hanging-indent markers. Dragging one of those moves only the selected paragraph or text; it does not change the page margin. For an exact measurement, use File → Page setup instead. See Google’s ruler guidance: Google Docs ruler and margins.
Change margins for only part of a document
Margins apply by section, not to arbitrary individual pages. A section break lets one part of a document use different page settings.

- Place the cursor where the new layout should begin.
- Choose Insert → Break → Section break.
- Click inside the section whose margins you want to change.
- Open File → Page setup and enter the margin values.
- Use the dialog’s Apply to or section-scope control, when shown, to confirm whether the change affects the current section or the document.
- Click OK and check the boundary between sections.
This is useful for a landscape table, a title page, an appendix, or a final page with different spacing. Section breaks can also support different orientations. To make boundaries visible, choose View → Show section breaks. Google describes section-specific margins and breaks here: section breaks and ruler settings.
Pages versus Pageless
Pages displays page boundaries and supports page breaks, headers, footers, page numbers, watermarks, and margin controls. Pageless uses continuous scrolling and removes or changes several page-oriented features. If margin fields are missing, choose File → Page setup → Pages → OK, then reopen Page setup to edit the values.

Switching formats can change pagination and the display of headers, footers, columns, page numbers, and other page-based elements. Google explains the differences between the two formats at Pages and Pageless.
Why the margin option may be missing
You are using the Android or iPhone/iPad app
Google’s current mobile help pages document controls such as orientation, paper size, and page color, but do not provide a desktop-equivalent workflow for entering custom margin values. Current support-community guidance treats custom margin editing as a desktop-only function, although the product could change. Open the file in Google Docs on a computer for manual margins. The ruler is hidden
Use View and enable the ruler-display option. If you need precise values, bypass the ruler and use Page setup.

Word imports and files opened from another service can behave differently. Confirm that you have editing permission, check that the document is in Pages mode, and verify the result in print preview or a PDF before submitting it.

Page margins versus paragraph indents

If every paragraph should sit farther from the paper edge, change the page margin. If only selected text should move, use indentation.
Fix an incorrect margin change
- The wrong paragraph moved: press Ctrl+Z on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+Z on Mac, then use Page setup for page margins.
- Only one page changed: show section breaks, inspect the section boundaries, and check the Page setup scope. The change may have applied only to the current section.
- Page edges are not visible: switch from Pageless to Pages and use print-layout viewing.
- Text is clipped in print: increase the relevant margin and check tables, images, drawings, and text boxes for content extending beyond the usable area.
Verify the result before printing or submitting
- Check the page visually to confirm that the text block moved as intended.
- Check the ruler markers if you used the visual method.
- Open print preview or export a PDF and inspect every section.
Printers have a minimum printable area, so a technically narrow margin may still be clipped by particular hardware. Paper size, print scaling, PDF export settings, wide tables, and images can also change the final output.

For formal requirements, set the values in Page setup, confirm the section scope, and check the PDF or print preview.
