Select the text you want to change, then choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Double. To change the whole document, select all of its text first. Google Docs applies double line spacing without changing your font, margins or paragraph content.
Double-space a Google Doc on a computer
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Select the text to format. Use Ctrl+A on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+A on Mac, if the entire document should be double-spaced. (In some browsers, the first press selects the current text area and a second press selects all document text.)
- Choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Double.
You can use the toolbar’s Line & paragraph spacing button instead of the Format menu. Google’s desktop control also includes Single, 1.15, 1.5 and Custom spacing. See Google’s current instructions at Google Docs Editors Help.
Double-space in the Google Docs mobile app
Both mobile apps include line-spacing controls. The labels and icon placement can vary with the device, screen size and app version, so use the named controls rather than relying on an icon’s appearance.

On either platform, double-tap in the document and move the selection markers over the required text before opening formatting. Google’s device-specific instructions are available for Android and iPhone and iPad.

Double-space only part of a document
Select the paragraphs first, then apply Double (or set the mobile value to 2/2.0). This lets you keep a title page, headings, block quotations or a bibliography at a different spacing. Placing the cursor in one paragraph without selecting other text changes only that paragraph in many situations.
Line spacing versus paragraph spacing
Line spacing controls the distance between lines within a paragraph. Paragraph spacing adds space before or after a paragraph block. They are separate settings, so a document can be double-spaced and still have extra-large gaps between paragraphs.

If the gaps look excessive, select the affected paragraphs and open Format → Line & paragraph spacing. Choose Remove space before paragraph and/or the option to remove space after the paragraph when available. For an exact specification, choose Custom spacing and set the before-and-after values required by your style guide. The available controls are documented by Google Docs Editors Help.

Pressing Enter twice inserts an empty paragraph; it does not set line spacing. Blank paragraphs can shift unpredictably when text is edited, pasted or repaginated. Use the built-in line-spacing setting instead.

Why double spacing may look wrong
- Only one paragraph changed: select the entire affected section and reapply Double.
- Paragraph gaps are still large: remove space before or after paragraphs, or use Custom spacing; double line spacing does not remove paragraph spacing.
- Pasted or imported text is inconsistent: select the affected range, reapply line spacing, then correct paragraph spacing. Use Format → Clear formatting only as a last resort because it can remove fonts, colors, links and emphasis; restore those styles afterward.
- You are using pageless mode: line spacing still works. Pageless documents simply lack some page-flow controls, including Keep with next, Keep lines together and Prevent single lines. Switch to Pages only when you need visible pagination or other page-layout features; Google explains the difference in its page setup guide.
- A formal assignment still fails its requirements: double spacing is only one specification. Check the required font, margins, indentation, headings, page numbers, quotations and reference-list rules separately.
Use voice typing (optional)
With Google Docs voice typing active, say “Line spacing double” to apply the setting hands-free. This command is listed in Google’s voice-typing commands.
Is there a keyboard shortcut?
Google’s current formatting help does not document a dedicated, universal shortcut that directly applies double spacing across operating systems and keyboard layouts. The Format menu or toolbar control is the dependable method. Menu-opening shortcuts such as Alt+Shift+O (Windows/ChromeOS) and Control+Option+O (Mac) open Format; they do not themselves apply double spacing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I double-space on my phone?
Yes. In the Google Docs app, select the text, open Format, choose Line spacing (or Format → Paragraph → Line spacing on iPhone/iPad), and set the value to 2 or 2.0. The exact display can vary by app version.

Why is there a large gap between paragraphs?
Paragraph spacing is separate from line spacing. Select the paragraphs and use Remove space before/after paragraph or Custom spacing.
Is 1.5 spacing the same as double spacing?
No. 1.5 and Double are separate line-spacing choices; Double creates the larger line-to-line distance.
Do I need Pages format to double-space?
No. Double spacing works in pageless documents. Pages format is useful only when you need pagination or other page-based layout controls.
