If you forgot the Gmail address, use Google’s username-recovery page. If you know the address but can’t sign in, use Google Account Recovery. If Google can’t find the account, check the address and recovery details first; the account may also have been deleted or compromised.
First, identify what you need to recover

A recovery email is an alternate address linked to a Google Account; it may not be the Gmail address you are trying to find. A Google Account can also be registered with a non-Gmail address.
Find a Gmail address you forgot
- Open Google’s username-recovery page.
- Enter a recovery phone number or recovery email address associated with the account.
- Provide the account holder’s name if Google asks.
- Review the matching accounts Google finds, select the right one, and continue with any ownership verification requested.
Google uses information supplied when the account was created or configured. If no match appears, try another old recovery number or email and check for typos. See Google’s account-finding guidance.

Username recovery works best when you can supply a recovery detail. You can also look for the exact address in places you previously used it:

- Old phones, tablets, and computers that may still be signed in, including Google Photos, Drive, YouTube, Android, or Play Store.
- Saved logins, browser autofill, or password managers such as Apple Passwords.
- Messages you sent, account-registration emails, receipts, old resumes, contact lists, and archived documents.
- Social-media, shopping, school, club, or other accounts that display the email used to register.
- Likely username variations based on an old nickname, initials, or numbers.
Ordinary Gmail addresses do not become separate inboxes just because dots are placed differently in the username. Still, enter the address as it originally appeared when checking an account.
Recover access when you know the address
- Go to Google Account Recovery and enter the old Gmail address or associated phone number.
- Choose a password-recovery option if Google offers one. When asked for a previous password, enter the most recent one you remember; if you are unsure, give your best accurate answer.
- Use an available recovery phone or email and enter any verification code only on Google’s official page.
- Answer any remaining ownership questions as accurately as possible. If Google confirms ownership, follow its prompts to set a new password.
Google says recovery is more likely to work from a device, browser, and location you have used with the account before. Its recovery troubleshooting guidance recommends accurate answers and a familiar computer when possible.
If you no longer have the old phone number
Losing a recovery number does not by itself prove that the account is unrecoverable. Start the recovery flow anyway: Google may offer the recovery email, a previous password, or other ownership questions. Use a familiar device and answer consistently rather than making random guesses.

- If the old number was disconnected recently, ask the carrier whether it can restore or reissue it to you; availability depends on the carrier and is not guaranteed.
- If Google offers an identity-verification form, complete it from a computer previously used with the account if possible.
- Avoid repeated incorrect attempts. Google may temporarily restrict a recovery option after too many wrong attempts.
There is no legitimate third-party service that can bypass Google’s ownership checks. Don’t give your password or verification code to a recovery service or to a phone number found in search results. Google explains that access cannot be restored if it cannot verify that you own the account: account access and recovery information.
What “Couldn’t find your Google Account” can mean
The message is not, by itself, proof that an account was deleted. The address may be mistyped, the recovery number or email may belong to a different account, or you may be remembering a different username. A personal account may also have been deleted, or its details may have been changed after a compromise.
- Re-enter the address carefully and try username recovery with each plausible recovery phone and email.
- Search old messages and saved logins for the exact address, then test it on an original device.
- If the recovery phone or email shown is unfamiliar, or you see other signs of suspicious activity, use Google’s compromised-account recovery route.
- If it was issued by an employer or school, contact that organization’s administrator; consumer Gmail recovery may not apply.
Google’s account-finding help specifically recommends checking for typos and trying another recovery number or email if it cannot find a match.

Could Google have deleted an inactive account?
For personal Google Accounts, Google defines inactivity as not using the account within a two-year period. It reserves the right to delete an inactive account and its data after at least two years; that does not mean every account crossing the threshold is automatically deleted. Google says the earliest deletion under this policy was December 1, 2023, and that it sends notices to the account and, if available, the recovery email before deletion.

Google assesses activity by account, not simply by device. The policy is for personal accounts, not accounts created through work, school, or another organization. Google lists exceptions, including some accounts with ongoing purchases or subscriptions, gift-card balances, active Play applications, Family Link management, or purchased digital items. If the account may have been deleted, try Account Recovery promptly. Recovery may be possible for a recently deleted account, but Google does not promise one universal recovery window. If recovery says the account cannot be found and offers no way forward, it may have been permanently deleted. Google also says deleted Gmail usernames are not recycled, so you cannot claim the old username for a replacement account.

If the account was hacked or disabled
A password that suddenly stops working can have several causes, including a forgotten or changed password; it does not prove hacking. Treat the account as potentially compromised if the recovery details, profile, security alerts, sent messages, filters, or forwarding rules are unfamiliar. Use Google’s compromised-account guidance to recover it.
If Google says the account is disabled, follow the appeal or other options shown when you sign in. Google’s disabled-account guidance explains the available steps and whether data download may be offered.
If it was a work or school account
An address managed by an employer, school, or other organization may be suspended or deleted under that organization’s rules. Contact its current administrator; the administrator may be the only person able to restore access. Google’s personal inactive-account policy expressly excludes organization-managed accounts.

An address from an internet provider, Microsoft, Yahoo, or another email service is not a Gmail inbox, even if you used it as a Google recovery email. It may still be the sign-in address for a Google Account.
After you regain access
- Set a unique password and save it in a trusted password manager or browser storage.
- Add a current recovery phone and recovery email.
- Review signed-in devices, recent security activity, and active sessions; sign out unfamiliar devices.
- Remove unfamiliar recovery methods, connected apps, forwarding addresses, and Gmail filters.
- Turn on two-step verification.
- Export important Gmail, Drive, and Photos data, and update the email on important third-party accounts.
Google recommends keeping recovery information current; its account recovery guidance covers recovery details and access limits.
When the account is probably unrecoverable
Recovery becomes unlikely if Google cannot match the address to an account, cannot verify your ownership, and offers no further verification route—or if the account was permanently deleted. A failed attempt does not always establish which of those happened. Follow the official recovery result rather than paying someone who claims they can override it. If you create a replacement account, its mailbox and files will not automatically include the old account’s Gmail, Drive, or Photos data.
