Yes. In the US, a Pixel 9 can use Gemini Live with a live camera view. Open the Gemini mobile app, tap Live, start speaking, then tap Turn on video streaming (the camera control). Point the phone at an object or scene and ask follow-up questions. Google’s current instructions do not list a paid Gemini plan as a requirement, although availability can vary by account, language, region and gradual rollout.
What Gemini Live camera mode does
Gemini Live is a spoken, back-and-forth conversation. With video streaming enabled, Gemini can discuss what the Pixel 9 camera is seeing while you move the phone and interrupt with follow-up questions. It is different from taking one photo and sending it with a text prompt.
- Identify an unfamiliar object, tool, appliance or label.
- Read visible text when the image is clear enough.
- Talk through a recipe, craft project or diagram.
- Compare visible products or clothing.
- Suggest inspection steps when troubleshooting a physical item.
Use it as conversational assistance, not as a certified mechanic, doctor, electrician, lawyer or safety inspector. Google warns that Gemini can be inaccurate; verify consequential advice independently (Google’s Pixel Gemini guidance).

What you need on a US Pixel 9
- A Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold or Pixel 9a running Android.
- The Gemini mobile app, or Gemini configured as the mobile assistant. This feature is in the mobile app, not Gemini on the web or in Google Messages.
- The latest Google app; update Gemini too if it appears separately in the Play Store.
- A signed-in Google account with Gemini Apps access. Supported language, location and age rules apply; Google’s Live help says you must be over 13 or meet the applicable local minimum.
- Camera and microphone permissions and an internet connection.
Pixel 9 phones ship with Gemini as the default assistant. You can open the app, say “Hey Google,” or hold the power button (Google Pixel help).

Set up and start a Live conversation
- Open the Play Store, search for Google, and tap Update if offered. Update Gemini as well.
- Open Gemini, or hold the Pixel 9 power button to check that Gemini is the active assistant.
- If Android asks for access, allow the microphone and camera. If you previously denied it, go to Settings → Apps → Gemini → Permissions → Camera / Microphone → Allow while using the app. Labels can differ by Android release.
- In Gemini, tap Live at the bottom, or swipe left. Complete any first-use instructions and speak normally. You can also try “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.”

Turn on and control the Pixel 9 camera
- While the Live conversation is active, tap Turn on video streaming or the camera icon. The wording and icon can vary by app version or rollout.
- Point the rear camera at the subject. Use Switch to rear or front camera if you need the selfie camera.
- Ask a specific question while you show the relevant area.
- Tap the camera control again to stop sharing. You can continue talking without video or end Live.
Camera sharing is not persistent. It turns off when you put Live on hold, leave Gemini, or lock the screen. Returning to the app or unlocking the phone does not restart it; tap the camera control again.

- Teach: “Walk me through this one step at a time and wait for me after each step.”

Camera sharing sends the camera view; screen sharing sends the entire phone screen, not a selected portion. Screen sharing requires Gemini Live notifications and also stops when Live is held or the screen locks. Restart it manually after returning.

If the Live or camera control is missing
- Confirm you are in the Gemini mobile app, not the web app or Google Messages.
- Update the Google and Gemini apps, then restart the Pixel 9.
- Check that you are signed in and have Gemini Apps access. Work or school administrators may restrict features.
- Review supported language, location and age eligibility.
- Open Gemini directly instead of relying on an assistant overlay.
- For a missing camera button, start the Live conversation first, check camera permission, and complete any first-use consent screen.
- If the control is still absent, Google may not have finished the gradual release for your account. A paid plan is not established as the fix.
When Gemini cannot see the subject
- Clean and uncover the lens, improve lighting and reduce glare.
- Move closer, hold the phone steady and make the relevant text or part larger.
- Describe the exact region to inspect and ask Gemini to state uncertainty.
- Check that the camera was not turned off by a lock screen, hold action or leaving the app; enable it again.
Privacy, safety and accuracy
Ask permission before including other people. Do not point the camera at passwords, payment cards, identity documents, private medical information, confidential work, addresses or personal messages. Stop video sharing as soon as it is no longer needed. Sharing the camera provides Gemini with visual context; it is not merely a local Pixel process.
For medical, legal, financial, electrical, chemical, traffic or other high-stakes decisions, use Gemini to formulate questions or identify what to verify—not as the final authority. Reframe the subject, ask for multiple possibilities, check model numbers and measurements, and consult an official manual or qualified professional.

Do you need Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra?
No paid plan is listed as required for ordinary Pixel 9 camera Live in Google’s current instructions. Google’s rollout announcements describe camera and screen sharing as free on Android and iOS, while noting that availability and limits can vary (Google’s I/O 2025 update). Plans are mainly relevant to heavier use, higher limits, storage and additional Google AI features.

- Identifying parts, labels or visible design features.
Poor fits
- Cases requiring a permanent, carefully framed record, where a still photo is better.
- Weak connectivity or situations where you do not want the camera active.
- Safety-critical or regulated decisions that require professional judgment.
Bottom line
On a Pixel 9, the workflow is Gemini app → Live → Turn on video streaming → ask specific questions. Keep the subject well lit, distinguish observation from inference, stop sharing when finished, and verify any answer that could affect health, money, safety or legal obligations.
