Broadcom’s June 20, 2023 announcement introduced three Wi-Fi 7 chips for residential routers, enterprise access points, and mobile devices—but it was a sample-availability announcement for device makers, not a retail launch. BCM6765, BCM47722, and BCM4390 broadened Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 7 portfolio with integrated processing, 6-GHz and multi-link capabilities, and embedded Bluetooth, Thread, and Zigbee options. “Second generation” describes Broadcom’s product lineup, not a new Wi-Fi standard.
What Broadcom announced
On June 20, 2023, Broadcom said it was sampling three second-generation Wi-Fi 7 connectivity chips to early-access customers across residential networking, enterprise, mobile, service-provider, and carrier markets. The chips are components for manufacturers to build into finished products; Broadcom did not announce consumer routers, phones, or access points for sale. It gave no public chip pricing and directed prospective customers to its sales representatives for samples and pricing. Broadcom’s announcement

The lineup adds products for three distinct roles: a residential access-point platform, an enterprise access-point platform with IoT radios, and a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combination chip for mobile clients. Broadcom had already announced a first-generation Wi-Fi 7 ecosystem in April 2022, covering residential, enterprise, and client-device categories. The 2023 release diversified that portfolio rather than introducing Wi-Fi 7 to Broadcom for the first time. Broadcom’s first-generation Wi-Fi 7 announcement

Why the residential BCM6765 matters
Broadcom positioned the BCM6765 as an integrated residential platform, not just a Wi-Fi radio. Combining the radios with a quad-core CPU and 10Gb Ethernet PHY can give manufacturers a route to designs with fewer separate components. Broadcom described it as a basis for mass-market access points and smart repeaters across different price, size, and performance tiers; it did not publish chip prices or quantify a bill-of-materials saving.
For router makers, integration is only one design choice. They still need to assess radio front ends, antennas, cooling, software, certification, and whether a 2×2 tri-band configuration fits the product better than a more flexible or higher-stream design. A built-in 10Gb Ethernet PHY also does not mean every finished router will include a 10Gb port: that depends on the OEM’s board and product choices.
What the BCM47722 adds to enterprise access points
The BCM47722 pairs Wi-Fi 7 access-point functions with dual IoT radios. Broadcom listed Bluetooth Low Energy, Thread, Zigbee, and other 802.15.4 capabilities, as well as Bluetooth 5.4 support and forward compatibility with a draft Channel Sounding specification. Those radios could support uses such as asset tracking, electronic shelf labels, building automation, sensor networks, and Bluetooth-based location services.

Built-in radios may reduce the need for separate radio hardware or IoT gateways in some deployments, but they do not make an access point a complete smart-building or Matter platform. The finished product still needs the necessary protocol stacks, firmware, certification, onboarding, security controls, and management integration. Enterprise buyers should check which radios and protocols a vendor actually enables, how IoT devices are segmented from corporate networks, what location accuracy is supported, and how long the access point will receive software and security support.
What the mobile BCM4390 brings
The BCM4390 targets phones and tablets that act as Wi-Fi clients. Broadcom specified two-stream operation, support for 2.4 GHz alongside 5- and 6-GHz operation, 160-MHz channels, and a maximum 3.2-Gbps PHY rate. The chip also combines Wi-Fi with Bluetooth Classic and Low Energy, Thread, and Zigbee.
A client chip helps extend Wi-Fi 7 beyond routers and access points, but a phone’s real-world results depend on the whole device: antennas, radio front end, power limits, thermal design, software, and the access point it connects to. A handset using a 160-MHz client link also cannot independently create a 320-MHz connection.

The BCM6765 and BCM47722 figures of up to 8.64 Gbps, and the BCM4390 figure of up to 3.2 Gbps, are Broadcom-specified PHY rates—the signaling rate at the radio link—not application throughput or internet speed. Actual data rates depend on channel width, streams, signal quality, interference, client and access-point capabilities, wired backhaul, and software. A 320-MHz channel is not available in every country or installation, and interference or spectrum rules can require narrower channels.
6 GHz and AFC
Six-gigahertz spectrum can provide room for wide channels, but its availability and permitted operating modes vary by region. It also generally has less reach through walls than lower-frequency bands, so a tri-band access point may still rely heavily on 5 GHz for coverage. Broadcom cited AFC-related compliance for its products; that should not be read as universal permission for higher-power 6-GHz operation. Actual use depends on local rules and, where required, an approved Automated Frequency Coordination system.

Multi-Link Operation
MLO lets compatible Wi-Fi 7 devices use multiple links, with potential benefits for throughput, resilience, or latency consistency. Broadcom said its ecosystem supports three-link MLO and claimed 50% lower latency compared with typical two-link implementations. That is a vendor claim; the announcement did not provide an independent test methodology or complete comparison conditions. The gain is not assured, and both ends of a connection must support compatible MLO behavior. A Wi-Fi 7 access point cannot give MLO to a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 5 client.
SpeedBooster
Broadcom described SpeedBooster as a way for a 160-MHz client, such as one based on BCM4390, to use capacity from a 320-MHz access point and potentially double connection speed. This is Broadcom’s implementation-specific claim, not a general Wi-Fi 7 guarantee: a 160-MHz client does not become a native 320-MHz client, and any benefit depends on compatible equipment and implementation.

For router and gateway makers
- Whether an integrated SoC or a more modular design better meets radio-flexibility, cost, and product goals.
- Whether 2×2 tri-band is sufficient, and whether the target regions and use cases can make practical use of 6 GHz and 320-MHz channels.
- How the design handles front-end modules, antennas, thermal limits, wired uplinks, and the intended MLO mode.
- What SDK, driver, certification, and product-lifecycle support Broadcom and the OEM will provide.
- Whether AFC requirements apply in the target market and how the final product will meet them.
For enterprise buyers
- Which Wi-Fi and IoT radios are enabled at the same time in the shipping access point, and which protocols its production firmware exposes.
- How Wi-Fi, IoT, and management traffic are secured and segmented, and whether the product supports the authentication and management features the organization needs.
- Whether the wired uplink, power system, and central management platform suit the deployment, and what the support lifecycle is.
- Whether any promised tracking, Thread, Zigbee, or Matter-related use has been tested and certified in the finished product.
For consumers
Broadcom’s announcement did not name a retail router or phone. Consumers should compare finished devices, not buy on the basis of a chip number alone. Check the product’s spatial-stream count, 6-GHz support in your country, Ethernet ports, mesh backhaul design, compatibility with your clients, firmware-update policy, and security support. The value of an upgrade also depends on whether your devices and internet or wired network can use the added capacity.

How to read the announcement today
The June 2023 release is a historical expansion of Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 7 ecosystem, not a report of a new Wi-Fi standard or the company’s newest wireless generation. As of August 16, 2026, Broadcom’s wireless LAN infrastructure catalog continues to list Wi-Fi 7 products including BCM6765 and BCM47722, alongside other Wi-Fi 7 parts; Broadcom has also moved on to a Wi-Fi 8 portfolio. Catalog status does not establish that any particular finished router, access point, or phone is available in a reader’s market. Broadcom Wireless LAN Infrastructure catalog
“Second generation” is Broadcom’s portfolio label. It does not mean “Wi-Fi 7.1,” nor does it denote an IEEE successor to Wi-Fi 7. Manufacturers still have to turn the chips into products, complete their software and certification work, and set launch timing and availability.
