On September 16, 2016, Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) delivered its 50th C-130J Super Hercules empennage from its Hyderabad facility. Lockheed Martin announced the milestone on September 19. The delivery was an aircraft tail assembly—not the 50th C-130J aircraft—and the assembly was destined for Lockheed Martin’s production line in Marietta, Georgia. (Lockheed Martin’s 2016 announcement)
What TLMAL delivered
An empennage is an aircraft’s tail assembly. The C-130J assembly produced by TLMAL comprised horizontal and vertical stabilizers, leading-edge structures, and tip assemblies. These are substantial aircraft structures, not a small spare part: the stabilizing surfaces contribute to the aircraft’s stability and control.
The milestone counted completed empennage assemblies. It did not mean that Tata and Lockheed Martin had delivered 50 complete Super Hercules aircraft, nor that the aircraft were being finally assembled in India. The Hyderabad-made structures entered Lockheed Martin’s aircraft-production system in Marietta.
A Hyderabad joint venture in the global supply chain
TLMAL was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Lockheed Martin Aeroframe Corporation, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary. Its facility is in Hyderabad, Telangana. C-130J component production began in late 2011, according to the 2016 announcement. That puts the 50th delivery roughly five years after production began; it is a timeline calculation, not a published production-rate figure.

Lockheed Martin described TLMAL as the single global source for the C-130J empennage assemblies installed on new aircraft produced in Marietta. Tata Advanced Systems’ current joint-venture description likewise identifies the Hyderabad operation as the global source for C-130J/LM100J empennages. This refers to a specific assembly’s place in the supply chain—not to India supplying every C-130J component. (Tata Advanced Systems’ joint-venture page)
That role made the 50th delivery notable beyond its round number. It showed an Indian manufacturing facility producing a complex military-aircraft structure for integration into a U.S.-based production line. The significance was industrial cooperation and global supply-chain participation, rather than a new aircraft order or a transfer of final aircraft assembly to India.

The work extended beyond the tail
The 2016 announcement also said TLMAL had produced 28 sets of C-130J center-wing-box components. The cited parts included front and rear beam assemblies, formers, and trailing-edge sections. Together with the empennages, that work indicates a broader aerostructures role than a single tail assembly.

- It did mean TLMAL had delivered 50 C-130J empennage assemblies from Hyderabad.
- It did not mean the 50th complete C-130J aircraft had been delivered.
- It did not establish that complete C-130J aircraft were being assembled in India in 2016.
- It did not identify the assemblies as being specifically for India’s fleet. They were part of the global production relationship.
- It was not a procurement award or announcement of a new Indian aircraft order.
The distinction matters when describing “Make in India.” The 2016 event was evidence of aircraft-structure manufacturing in India and integration into an international production chain; it was not proof that a complete Super Hercules was made in India.

From the 50th assembly to later milestones
Subsequent announcements show that the 2016 milestone was an early point in a continuing production relationship:

The 260-plus figure is a later corporate update, not a basis for calculating a precise annual production rate: the public milestones do not supply a consistent series of shipment dates or counting methods. Lockheed Martin’s 2019 announcement of the 100th delivery and Tata’s later updates document the progression.

India’s C-130J fleet and the next phase
Lockheed Martin says the Indian Air Force operates 12 C-130J aircraft. That fleet is part of the wider U.S.–India relationship around the Super Hercules, but the 50th empennage was a global manufacturing milestone, not necessarily a component delivery for an Indian aircraft. In September 2024, Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin announced plans to explore expanded C-130J opportunities in India. Areas included a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for India’s existing fleet and other global Super Hercules fleets, as well as possible expanded manufacturing and assembly in India for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft program. In December 2025, the companies announced the groundbreaking of a new C-130J-focused defense MRO facility in India. Tata said construction was expected to finish by the end of 2026, with the first C-130J expected to enter MRO operations in early 2027. Those are announced targets, not confirmation that the facility is complete or operational. (Lockheed Martin’s facility announcement)
The 2016 delivery therefore stands as an early, concrete example of India’s role in the Super Hercules industrial base: a major aircraft structure made in Hyderabad for a global program. Its importance is real, but specific—it marked progress in aerostructure manufacturing, not the arrival of Indian-built complete C-130J aircraft.
