No joint announcement from Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman declared smartphones over. The headline is a media synthesis of separate projects: Neuralink’s clinical brain-computer-interface research, Meta’s AI glasses, and a reported AI-device effort involving Altman. Those projects point to new ways of interacting with computers, but none shows that phones are about to disappear. Apple, meanwhile, is exploring spatial computing as well as extending its iPhone ecosystem—not simply rejecting a post-phone future.
Where the “end of smartphones” claim comes from
A prominent version of the claim appeared in a March 31, 2025 article that grouped Musk, Zuckerberg, Altman and Bill Gates under a shared post-smartphone narrative. Later versions circulated with changed headlines. That is not the same as a coordinated declaration: the figures have different projects, at different stages, and the phrase “declare the end” is headline language rather than a verified joint quotation. (Indian Defence Review; The News International)
The useful question is not whether three executives have announced the same future. It is whether their companies’ technologies can take over enough everyday phone tasks to change how people use smartphones.

Four different visions, at very different stages
| Person or company | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Elon Musk / Neuralink | A clinical study of an implanted brain-computer interface (BCI) intended to let participants control a computer interface using neural signals. | A mass-market device, ordinary consumer clearance, long-term safety, a phone-independent communications system, or a replacement timetable. |
| Mark Zuckerberg / Meta | Commercial AI glasses and display glasses, alongside Meta’s stated ambition to make glasses a computing platform. | That the glasses can perform the full range of smartphone tasks independently. |
| Sam Altman | Reporting has linked him to an AI hardware effort involving former Apple designer Jony Ive. | A finalized product, specifications, price, launch date, or proof that it is intended to replace rather than complement a phone. |
| Tim Cook / Apple | Apple has introduced spatial computing with Vision Pro while continuing its iPhone ecosystem. | A verified direct rebuttal from Cook to the three executives, or a promise that smartphones will remain dominant indefinitely. |
Musk: Neuralink is clinical research, not a consumer phone alternative
Neuralink’s PRIME Study brochure describes a clinical investigation of a brain-computer interface. In principle, a BCI can translate certain neural signals into computer commands, potentially offering new ways to interact with digital devices—particularly for people who cannot use conventional controls. (Neuralink PRIME Study brochure)

That is a long way from an implant replacing a smartphone. A clinical study does not demonstrate broad consumer availability, general-purpose communication, regulatory clearance for healthy consumers, affordability, or established long-term maintenance and safety. An implanted interface could eventually reduce dependence on hands, screens or other conventional controls for some tasks. The available evidence does not show that it can replace a phone.
Zuckerberg: Meta is making the clearest commercial case for glasses
Meta’s glasses are the closest thing in this group to a product category consumers can buy and use now. Audio-and-camera Ray-Ban Meta glasses combine microphones, speakers, cameras and voice interaction, including Meta AI features. They can make short interactions—taking a photo, listening to audio or asking a question—more hands-free. They are still glasses rather than a complete smartphone, and many functions rely on a paired phone, its app or online services.
Meta’s September 2025 announcements show a progression beyond audio-only eyewear. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 was announced at a U.S. starting price of $379. Meta Ray-Ban Display adds an in-lens display and comes with the Meta Neural Band wristband for gesture input; Meta announced a $799 starting price and limited U.S. retail availability beginning September 30, 2025. Meta has framed the display glasses as part of an effort to build a new computing platform. (Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 announcement; Meta Ray-Ban Display announcement)

Meta also announced Meta Glasses with EssilorLuxottica in June 2026, describing prescription-compatible eyewear with open-ear audio and an always-available AI assistant. The announcement gave a starting price of $299 and said 26 styles were available. These are official launch-era U.S. price signals, not a guarantee of current stock or the price of every lens configuration. Check the relevant market, prescription options and feature availability before buying. (Meta Glasses announcement)
Glasses have a credible near-term role because they can be worn throughout the day and suit quick, hands-free interactions. Their limits are just as important: small or absent displays make extended reading and complex tasks awkward; battery life and connectivity matter; and cameras and microphones raise questions of privacy and consent. Some AI features may vary by region, language, account and connection. They can reduce the need to reach for a phone without making the phone unnecessary.
Altman: a reported AI-device project, not a confirmed “iPhone killer”
Altman has been linked in reporting to a new AI hardware effort with former Apple designer Jony Ive. The project is relevant to the idea of ambient computing—an assistant that is available without repeatedly opening apps and staring at a screen. But the material available does not establish a finished consumer product, final form, specifications, price or release schedule. Nor does it demonstrate that the device would replace smartphones. It is more accurate to describe this as a reported project than as a completed phone alternative or a public declaration that phones are ending.

Cook and Apple: expanding computing, not issuing a documented rebuttal
Apple’s own actions complicate the idea that it is simply defending the smartphone. The company introduced Vision Pro as its first “spatial computer,” with eyes, hands and voice as primary ways to interact. Cook described it as the beginning of a new era of computing. Apple is thus pursuing a new category while retaining the iPhone as a central part of its product ecosystem; that is an expansion strategy, not evidence of a direct Cook response to Musk, Zuckerberg and Altman. What could “the end of smartphones” actually mean?
The phrase bundles together several claims that should be kept separate:
Rank #4
- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²

- Phones disappear: There is no evidence here that this is imminent.
- Phones become less visible: Glasses, watches or earbuds might handle quick questions, photos, audio and notifications while a phone stays in a pocket.
- The screen matters less for some interactions: Voice, cameras, contextual assistants and glanceable displays can reduce—but not eliminate—screen use.
- Phones become one part of a larger system: A phone can continue to supply connectivity, apps, processing or fallback functions while wearables handle specific tasks. This is the most plausible near-term reading of the trend.
- A new device replaces a phone for certain tasks or people: That is possible in limited settings, but it is not the same as replacing the full smartphone workload.
A real general-purpose replacement would need dependable calls and messaging, navigation, payments, authentication, emergency access, a usable visual interface, app support, all-day power, privacy protections, accessibility, and a way to keep working when a battery dies or a network is unavailable. It would also need to be comfortable, affordable, repairable and socially acceptable. A wearable may excel at one or two parts of that list while depending on a phone for the rest.

AI and display glasses
Choose glasses for hands-free photos, calls or audio, voice-assistant access and selected quick tasks—not on the assumption that they provide a full phone experience. Display models add glanceable information and gesture input, but a small in-lens screen is not a substitute for a phone’s larger display for reading, editing, long messages or detailed navigation. They may be a poor fit if you need a large screen for work or accessibility, dislike wearing a camera in public, or need fully phone-independent operation. Confirm phone pairing, compatible operating systems, supported languages and regional AI availability for the exact model.
Brain-computer interfaces
Neuralink is not a retail alternative to consider in place of a smartphone. An implanted BCI raises medical, regulatory, safety, privacy, security and long-term maintenance questions that do not apply in the same way to ordinary consumer wearables. Its potential accessibility value is meaningful, but clinical research should not be conflated with a mass-market product.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
Spatial headsets
A headset can offer large virtual displays and immersive 3D work, media or training environments. It is also expensive, less portable and more physically conspicuous than a phone or ordinary glasses. Vision Pro may make sense for specialized spatial-computing uses; it is not an obvious everyday replacement for calls, quick checks and on-the-go tasks. Apple’s U.S. starting price is $3,499, a substantial distinction from the glasses prices above.
Should you wait to buy a smartphone?
No current evidence in these projects gives a typical phone buyer a practical reason to delay a needed smartphone purchase. If you want to use technology with less screen time, consider glasses for specific hands-free functions, a smartwatch for notifications and fitness, or earbuds for audio and calls—but keep a phone for tasks those devices do not handle reliably. Consider Vision Pro only if its spatial applications justify its cost and headset form. Do not make a buying decision on the promise of an imminent consumer brain implant or an unspecified AI device.
Prices, stock, prescription options and software features change by region and over time. A wearable’s AI may require an account, a companion phone, internet access or supported language and service; check those requirements and the return policy for the specific product before purchase.
