A clear, plant-derived paperboard cup that held freshly boiled water and broke down in deep-sea tests is a striking materials-science result. But it is a research-stage prototype—not a material that can end plastic waste. The technology, developed by JAMSTEC, the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of Science, could eventually replace some single-use packaging if it can be manufactured affordably and pass the necessary performance and safety tests.
What is the new plant-based material?
It is transparent paperboard made from regenerated cellulose, not a conventional plastic and not simply ordinary paper with a clear coating. Cellulose is the structural polymer in plant cell walls and the main ingredient in paper. The researchers dissolve cellulose and then regenerate it as a dense network of nanoscale fibers. The tightly packed structure scatters less light than ordinary paper, allowing the resulting sheet to look transparent.
The research team used a lithium-bromide-based dissolution process, followed by regeneration, washing and drying. The study reports recovery and reuse of the solvent-containing process water. The work was published in Science Advances in April 2025 as “Fully circular shapable transparent paperboard with closed-loop recyclability and marine biodegradability across shallow to deep sea.” JAMSTEC’s announcement describes contributions from JAMSTEC, the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of Science.

Researchers made flat sheets as well as cup-shaped and straw-like forms. Cellulose feedstock can potentially include recovered paper or textiles, but that possibility does not mean every version uses waste material or has the same environmental footprint.

What did the researchers demonstrate?
| Feature | What was reported | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency | High transparency at roughly 0.3–1.5 mm thickness; haze below 30% at packaging-relevant thicknesses of about 0.3–0.7 mm. | It can be see-through, but that does not establish glass- or clear-PET-like appearance in every form. Thickness, finish, moisture and additives matter. |
| Strength | The institutional summary reports hardness and strength that can exceed those of polycarbonate in the comparisons described by the team. | That is not a claim that it outperforms every plastic in every use. Tensile strength, impact resistance, wet strength and puncture resistance are different properties. |
| Hot water | A prototype cup held freshly boiled water without an internal plastic film coating. | This is promising for some hot-drink packaging, not proof of suitability for every food, liquid, filling line or duration of storage. |
| Shaping | Researchers demonstrated sheets, cups and straw-like forms. | Prototype forming is not the same as fast, consistent production on commercial packaging equipment. |
| Recycling and solvent handling | The study reports converting the material back into transparent paperboard and reusing process solvent in a controlled loop. | A laboratory recycling loop does not establish that municipal paper-recycling facilities can sort and process it, or that consumers will have access to collection. |
| Marine degradation | Tested cups lost mass at several deep-sea sites, with microscopy and genetic analysis indicating cellulose-degrading microorganisms and enzymes. | Results apply to the tested material and sites; they do not establish a universal degradation rate in oceans, rivers, soil, compost or landfills. |
Why ordinary paper cups use plastic coatings
Paperboard is absorbent and porous. A polymer coating can help a cup resist water and grease, hold its shape, seal at seams, protect the contents and tolerate heat. Packaging may also need barriers to oxygen, moisture, aroma or contamination, plus inks, adhesives and sealants. Transparency is another function that conventional paperboard does not provide on its own.
The cellulose prototype addresses some of these challenges: its dense structure is transparent, and a demonstrated cup held freshly boiled water without a plastic lining. The researchers also investigated naturally derived fatty-acid salts to improve water repellency while retaining transparency. But the available results do not establish performance for long-term liquid storage, oily or acidic foods, carbonated drinks, freezing, microwaving, dishwashing or repeated use. Nor do they show that every required barrier or seal can be supplied without other materials.

What the deep-sea tests found
The team tested cups at three sites off Japan, at approximately 757 meters off Misaki, 855 meters off Hatsushima and 5,552 meters near Minamitorishima. The study reports mass loss at all three. At the roughly 757-meter site, a cup nearly disappeared within four months. Based on measured rates, the researchers estimated that a cup at depths of roughly 700–1,000 meters could take around six months to a year to degrade completely. Microscopy and genetic analysis found microorganisms and enzymes associated with cellulose breakdown, including cellulase and β-glucosidase. See the JAMSTEC account and the peer-reviewed study.

Recyclable in a lab does not mean recycled in practice
“Closed-loop” describes the research team’s controlled process: the material was recycled into transparent paperboard and the solvent-containing wastewater was recovered for reuse. Those are meaningful design results. They do not demonstrate an industrial recycling network, consumer collection, compatibility with existing paper mills, or real-world recycling rates after a product reaches the market.
Similarly, the marine biodegradation evidence should not be casually translated into “compostable.” Compostability depends on the setting and applicable test standard. The central evidence here concerns degradation in marine environments, not certification for home or industrial composting. In a commercial package, inks, adhesives, labels, water-repellent treatments and any added barrier layers would also need to be assessed as part of the whole product.

Where it might make sense—and what could hold it back
If it can be made at scale, transparent regenerated cellulose could be relevant to selected short-lived packaging, such as clear cups or containers where visibility and hot-liquid performance are useful. A marine-degradation backstop could matter for applications with a credible risk of accidental release. It is not a drop-in substitute for durable goods, medical plastics, synthetic fibers or every packaging format.

The largest immediate obstacle is cost. A manual laboratory-made cup was reported to cost about ¥3,000–¥5,000. A researcher described a future target of roughly three times the cost of ordinary paperboard if continuous production and counterflow washing can be established; that is a projection, not a market price or demonstrated manufacturing cost. Science Japan’s report provides the cost context.

Other hurdles include production speed, drying time, energy and water use, solvent recovery and losses, sheet consistency, barrier performance, storage stability, cellulose supply, and compatibility with filling and sealing machinery. Food-contact safety and regulatory requirements must be met in the markets where it would be sold. Manufacturers would also need to show that the complete package—not just the cellulose sheet—can be recycled or safely biodegraded through realistic end-of-life routes.
A full environmental assessment would need to account for the source of cellulose, forestry or agricultural impacts, process energy, water, transportation and recycling losses. Plant-derived does not automatically mean low-impact. Nor does a recyclable design ensure recycling: waste collection, sorting and local processing still matter.
How it compares with other packaging choices
- Coated paperboard: Already used for many cups and cartons. Coatings help provide barriers and seals, but can complicate recovery depending on their design and local recycling systems. The cellulose prototype aims to combine some useful paperboard properties with transparency and avoid an internal plastic film in its demonstrated hot-water cup.
- PLA and PHA: These are bioplastics, chemically distinct from regenerated cellulose. Their processing routes and disposal requirements differ, and a “bio-based” label alone does not tell a buyer whether a product will biodegrade in its local environment.
- Seaweed, alginate and protein-based materials: These can be developed as films, coatings or other packaging formats, but they are not equivalent to a formed cellulose paperboard cup. Their performance and end-of-life claims are product-specific.
- Molded fiber and mycelium composites: Useful for some trays, protective packaging and shaped containers, but generally not a direct match for a transparent cup.
- Reuse and reduction: A reusable cup or eliminating unnecessary packaging avoids making a new single-use item in the first place. Where reuse is practical, a new disposable material is not automatically the better option.
Reviews of biodegradable alternatives emphasize that materials solve different problems and face their own scale-up, cost, consistency and regulatory challenges. A broader Nature Reviews Clean Technology perspective likewise concludes that biodegradable plastics alone have limited potential to prevent waste accumulation without recycling and wider waste-management measures. These comparisons reinforce the point: no new material substitutes for a functioning waste system.

- Demonstrate continuous pilot production with repeatable quality, faster forming and drying, and documented solvent recovery.
- Publish independent lifecycle analysis covering feedstock, energy, water, transport, process losses and realistic end-of-life routes.
- Test the full package for water, grease, oxygen and aroma barriers; heat and storage performance; seals; and compatibility with commercial filling lines.
- Complete food-contact and safety reviews for the intended products and sales markets, including any inks, adhesives or additives.
- Validate recycling and biodegradation claims for finished products under relevant third-party methods and real collection or environmental conditions.
- Establish viable supply and recovery systems so cellulose sourcing, solvent management, sorting and end-of-life handling work beyond a laboratory.
Until those milestones are met, the material is best understood as a promising research prototype rather than a product consumers can readily buy. Its significance is narrower but still real: it demonstrates a way to make shaped, transparent cellulose packaging with notable hot-water and marine-degradation results, while leaving scale, cost and system-level questions unresolved.
