If Kodi has no sound, first check whether audio fails everywhere or only in Kodi. Then check mute and volume, select the right output device, and temporarily turn off passthrough. These quick, reversible tests usually reveal whether the cause is Kodi’s settings, an unsupported audio format, Windows or another system’s audio setup, or the HDMI connection.
The menu labels below are based on Kodi 21 examples; available settings vary by operating system, device, and audio connection.
Start with these quick checks
- Test another app. Play a system sound or audio in another app. If that is silent too, check the operating system, TV, receiver, speakers, connection, and system volume before changing Kodi.
- Check the whole audio chain. Make sure the TV, soundbar, or receiver is not muted, the volume is up, and the correct input is selected. Check whether headphones or a Bluetooth device have taken over audio output.
- Check Kodi’s volume. On a keyboard, press F8 to toggle mute and + to raise Kodi’s volume. Kodi has separate controls for interface sounds and playback, so menu clicks working does not prove that movie audio is configured correctly. See the Kodi audio troubleshooting guide.
- Test another file. Try a local stereo audio or video file, then try the silent title again. If only one file fails, investigate its audio track or codec rather than resetting Kodi.
- Turn off passthrough temporarily. In Kodi, open Settings → System → Audio and switch off Allow passthrough. Test the same file. If sound returns, Kodi’s normal output path works and the likely issue is passthrough compatibility, device negotiation, or an unsupported format.
If Kodi and other apps are silent, the first problem is outside Kodi. If other apps work but Kodi does not, continue with Kodi’s output settings. If stereo files work but a surround-sound movie does not, focus on the movie’s track and passthrough settings.

Go to Settings → System → Audio. If you cannot see the audio options you expect, raise Kodi’s settings level using the control shown at the bottom of the settings screen. The available devices and labels depend on the platform.

Check Audio output device and, if using passthrough, Passthrough output device. They are distinct settings: one handles audio Kodi decodes, while the other sends an encoded stream to another device to decode. Choose the device that actually receives audio:
- HDMI directly to a TV: choose the TV’s HDMI audio device.
- HDMI to a receiver or soundbar: choose that device’s HDMI audio endpoint.
- Built-in speakers or analog headphones: choose the internal or analog output.
- USB DAC or sound card: choose that USB device.
- Linux: select the appropriate available PulseAudio, PipeWire, or ALSA output for the installation.
Do not assume Kodi is using the operating system’s default output. For Windows passthrough, Kodi recommends choosing the corresponding WASAPI device. If you are troubleshooting silence rather than specifically testing passthrough, first select the intended output and test with passthrough off.
Why passthrough can cause silence
Passthrough sends encoded audio—such as Dolby Digital or DTS—to a receiver, TV, or soundbar for decoding. That receiving device and every part of the connection must support the particular format. Passthrough is not required for ordinary stereo, MP3, AAC, FLAC, or PCM playback: Kodi can decode supported audio and send PCM to the output instead.
Kodi warns that enabling formats the receiving device cannot handle can result in no sound and even poor video playback. Its audio settings documentation explains the relevant controls and their platform-dependent behavior.

To identify a format problem, leave passthrough off until sound works. Then enable passthrough and add only a format your receiver or soundbar explicitly supports. Test a file using that format before enabling another. If sound stops after adding one, turn that option back off. Kodi’s troubleshooting guide also recommends inspecting a file’s audio codec with MediaInfo.
Check the selected audio track
If Kodi’s menus have sound but one movie does not, open the player’s audio settings or track selector. Confirm that a track is selected, try the default or first track, and check whether the selected track is commentary, in an unexpected language, or in a format your playback chain cannot handle. If the file has a stereo or AC3 track, try it.
A video can play normally while its chosen audio track is incompatible or silent. If another file plays, but a particular title remains silent even with passthrough disabled, the file or its audio tracks are more likely to be the issue than Kodi’s global output device.

Kodi connected directly to a TV
Start with passthrough off, Kodi decoding the audio, and a channel count that matches the TV’s capabilities—often 2.0. TVs vary, but Kodi notes that they generally do not support DTS, TrueHD, or DTS-HD passthrough; AC3 is more commonly supported. Check the TV’s manual or format list rather than relying on a general “Dolby” label.

Kodi connected to a receiver or soundbar by HDMI
Select the receiver or soundbar as Kodi’s output and check that it is on the correct HDMI input. When Kodi decodes a file and sends PCM, the receiver may display a label such as “PCM” or “Multi-Channel In.” That can be normal, not a sign of failure: the receiver is receiving decoded audio rather than the original encoded bitstream. Display labels vary by manufacturer.
Set the channel count for the actual speaker layout when Kodi is decoding. Use passthrough only for formats the receiver supports. The channel-count setting concerns decoded PCM; it does not set the number of channels in passthrough audio.
Optical S/PDIF
S/PDIF carries up to 2.0 channels of PCM. Some equipment can pass supported compressed multichannel formats such as AC3 or DTS, but it cannot carry lossless HD formats such as TrueHD or DTS-HD. Disable those passthrough options when using optical audio.
HDMI-ARC/eARC, switches, and splitters
For diagnosis, simplify the path. Connect the Kodi device directly to the TV if possible, then add the soundbar or receiver back into the chain. Temporarily remove HDMI switches, splitters, adapters, and capture devices. ARC/eARC behavior and supported formats depend on the connected devices and their settings, so a device advertised as supporting a format does not prove that the entire route passes it.
Understand the other Kodi audio settings
- Number of channels: sets the PCM channel layout Kodi uses when it decodes audio. It does not control passthrough channel count. Match it to the output route rather than setting 5.1 or 7.1 by default.
- Output configuration: Best Match attempts to follow source properties; Optimised sets properties at playback start and does not change them for every source; Fixed holds the selected output properties and disables passthrough.
- Sync Playback to Display: enabling this disables passthrough because Kodi must manipulate audio to synchronize playback. If passthrough stops being available after enabling sync, this is expected behavior.

Windows: check the output, WASAPI, and driver
- Open Windows sound settings and choose the intended HDMI, speaker, receiver, or USB output device. Confirm Windows itself can play audio through it.
- In Kodi’s Settings → System → Audio, select the corresponding WASAPI device. Restart Kodi and test with passthrough off first.
- If testing passthrough, open the Windows device properties. For HDMI, inspect Supported Formats and the reported maximum channel count. Under Advanced, enable Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority, then restart Kodi and test again.
- If expected formats are missing, check the driver supplied by the computer, motherboard, or graphics-card manufacturer. Kodi notes that a generic Microsoft HDMI audio driver may expose reduced functionality. Its Windows audio guide also notes that HD audio needs the device to report eight channels; a format appearing in the list alone does not guarantee that HD audio will work.
DirectSound uses Windows’ mixer and resampling; Kodi describes WASAPI Exclusive as the path intended to send encoded audio unchanged to a receiver. Missing formats can point to a driver issue or HDMI capability negotiation (EDID/ELD), not necessarily a broken Kodi installation.
HDMI troubleshooting: image works, sound does not
A working picture does not prove that the HDMI chain has correctly reported its audio capabilities. Kodi relies on capability information exchanged between devices, and a negotiation problem can leave video working while some or all audio formats are unavailable.

- Close Kodi and power off the TV or receiver and the Kodi device.
- Reconnect HDMI at both ends, confirm the correct input, then power on the TV or receiver first and the Kodi device afterward.
- Test another HDMI input. If possible, connect the Kodi device directly to the TV to isolate the receiver, soundbar, or switch.
- Try another cable if the connection is intermittent or the direct test points to the cable. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix: a cable will not correct an unsupported codec, wrong output device, or driver problem.

Android TV, Linux, macOS, and Raspberry Pi
Audio controls differ among platforms, device makers, and firmware versions. Do not look for Windows-only labels such as WASAPI outside Windows.
- Android TV or streaming box: check Android volume and mute, the TV/receiver input, and Kodi’s available output device. Turn off passthrough and test PCM before re-enabling only supported formats. Try direct HDMI to the TV, then restart the Android device and audio equipment. A “4K” or “Android TV” label does not guarantee support for TrueHD, DTS-HD, or a particular Atmos format.
- Linux: first verify desktop audio and the selected output sink. Close other applications that may be using the audio device, then test Kodi with passthrough off. PulseAudio or another desktop audio layer may affect passthrough availability; avoid changing ALSA configuration until basic output testing points to that layer. See Kodi’s PulseAudio guidance.
- macOS: verify the system output, Kodi’s available output device, and the TV or receiver input. Test a stereo file with passthrough off, then reconnect HDMI or USB audio and test again.
- Raspberry Pi or dedicated media-center hardware: check whether Kodi is using HDMI or analog output, test direct HDMI, and confirm the board and installed operating system support the intended audio route. Options vary among installations; do not assume a setting for one media-center distribution applies to another.
Kodi’s official download page lists supported platforms. The settings shown in Kodi depend on the platform and selected audio device.
Reset settings only after the simple tests
- Note or photograph the current audio settings.
- Turn off passthrough, select the correct output device, and set output configuration to Best Match. Test again.
- If the problem persists, create a new Kodi profile or temporarily rename the Kodi userdata folder to see whether the existing profile is involved.
- Restore custom settings and add-ons only after audio works in the new profile. Avoid deleting the full Kodi profile as an early fix; it can remove libraries, databases, add-on settings, remote configurations, subtitles, and other customizations.
Reinstalling Kodi is unlikely to fix a muted receiver, wrong output, unsupported codec, missing driver capability, or HDMI negotiation problem. Use the official Kodi download page if you need an installer; Kodi itself does not supply media content.
If sound is still missing: collect useful evidence
Enable Kodi’s debug logging, reproduce the problem, and keep the resulting log. Include your Kodi version and operating system, device model, connection path (for example, Kodi device → receiver → TV), whether the fault affects all files or only certain formats, Kodi audio-settings screenshots, and the format shown on the TV or receiver.
Kodi’s troubleshooting documentation says the log lists available audio devices; m_channels reports available PCM channels and m_dataFormats lists supported formats such as DTS-HD, TrueHD, E-AC3, DTS, AC3, and PCM. Use that evidence to narrow the next step:
- No audio device appears in Kodi: investigate the operating system, driver, permissions, or hardware.
- The device appears but expected formats are absent: check the driver, firmware, HDMI path, and reported capabilities.
- The format appears but passthrough is silent: turn off that format and test Kodi decoding instead.
- Only one file or stream is silent: check its track and codec; if only one add-on or stream fails, investigate that source rather than global Kodi audio.
