If Messages on your Mac sends text but not pictures, first check whether the conversation is blue or green. Blue messages use iMessage over the internet; green messages use SMS, MMS, or RCS and depend on your iPhone’s connection and setup. Then test with a small screenshot: that helps separate a file problem from an account, recipient, network, or forwarding issue.
Start with three quick tests
- Check the bubble color. Blue means iMessage. Green means SMS, MMS, or RCS, which may rely on your iPhone and carrier.
- Send a small screenshot to the same person. If that works but a large photo or video does not, the original file or the delivery route may be the issue.
- Try another conversation. If only one person is affected, check the address and start a fresh thread. If pictures fail for everyone, check the Mac’s connection, Apple’s service status, and your Messages account.
These tests narrow down the cause; none alone proves it. A browser loading a webpage, for example, confirms general internet access but does not rule out an Apple service, account, VPN, or carrier issue.
Check your connection and Apple’s service status
Open a browser on the Mac and load a reliable webpage. If it will not load, reconnect to Wi-Fi or test another network. Before changing account settings, check Apple’s System Status page for an iMessage issue. Status can change, so check it when the problem occurs rather than assuming the service is either up or down.
If the Mac is online and Apple reports no issue, temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry, or test on another network such as a phone hotspot. Apple notes that VPN or security software can block network ports used by iMessage and FaceTime. Use this only as a temporary test; do not remove security software or leave protection disabled. Send the image another way
In Messages, open the conversation and click the Apps button next to the message field, then choose Photos and select an image or video. You can also drag a file into the message field or copy and paste it. If one method fails, try another: a Photos-picker problem does not necessarily mean message delivery is broken. Apple documents these options in its Mac Messages guide.
Start with a screenshot or small, ordinary image rather than a large video, Live Photo, RAW file, or very high-resolution picture. If the small image sends, export or resize the original and test again. Check available storage on both the Mac and iPhone. Carriers may limit attachment size for SMS/MMS, and larger files can take longer; there is no single size limit that applies to every iMessage, carrier, region, and file type. If the conversation is blue: check iMessage on the Mac
- Open Messages > Settings from the menu bar. On older macOS versions, the menu may say Preferences.
- Click iMessage and confirm that you are signed in to the intended Apple Account.
- Under You can be reached for messages at, check that the correct phone number or email address is selected. Also check Start new conversations from if new messages are using the wrong identity.
Make sure the recipient’s conversation is addressed to the phone number or Apple Account email they use for iMessage. A saved contact can have several addresses, and they may not all use the same messaging route. Try creating a new conversation and selecting the correct number or email from Contacts.

Check the Mac’s clock at Apple menu > System Settings > Date & Time (or System Preferences on older macOS). An incorrect date, time, or time zone can interfere with account sign-in, though it is not the first explanation to pursue when only one picture fails.
If the conversation is green: check your iPhone
Green does not automatically mean something is broken. It means the message is using SMS, MMS, or RCS rather than iMessage. When sending these messages from a Mac, the setup depends on an iPhone that is powered on, connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service, and using the same Apple Account. Availability and features can vary by region and carrier. See Apple’s explanation of Messages routing and setup.
On your iPhone, check that you can send the same picture from the phone first. Then confirm the following:

- Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on iMessage.
- Tap Send & Receive and confirm that the iPhone uses the same Apple Account as the Mac.
- Return to Messages settings and tap Text Message Forwarding. Turn on the Mac if it is listed.
If Messages in iCloud is enabled, Apple says separate Text Message Forwarding is not required because the forwarding function is built into Messages in iCloud. If the Mac is missing from Text Message Forwarding, check that both devices use the same Apple Account. Apple also recommends turning iMessage off and back on, then checking Send & Receive and signing in again if the setting still does not appear. Follow Apple’s full Text Message Forwarding guidance.
If the picture sends from the iPhone but not the Mac, check the Mac’s Messages sign-in, the forwarding or iCloud setup, and the Mac’s network. If it fails from both devices, the recipient, carrier, attachment, account, or an outage may be involved. For a green-bubble failure that persists with a small image, ask your carrier whether your plan and region support the messaging route being used.
When one person or thread is affected
Check whether the conversation is addressed to the recipient’s current phone number or iMessage email, then start a new conversation with the verified address. Test a different recipient. If Messages says the person is not registered with iMessage, they cannot be reached at that address through iMessage; use an address that is registered or, where supported, the iPhone-backed SMS/MMS/RCS route.

Restart and update before signing out
Try the least disruptive steps first:
- Quit Messages, reopen it, and retry with a small screenshot.
- Restart the Mac and, for green-bubble messages, the iPhone.
- Install available macOS and iOS updates, then test again.
- If the problem remains, sign out of iMessage on the Mac, restart it, and sign in again using the same Apple Account as the iPhone.
Signing out can temporarily affect message availability while the account reconnects, so do not start there. Apple’s Messages troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the internet connection, recipient address, software updates, date and time, and iMessage sign-in. Its sign-in guidance covers signing out, restarting, and signing in again.

If Messages shows a red exclamation mark or Not Delivered, click or Control-click the failed message and use a retry option if one appears. After checking the connection, try again or start a new conversation. Do not assume that a Send as Text Message control will appear on Mac; iPhone and Mac controls can differ.

For a blue conversation, check iMessage sign-in, Apple System Status, and the Mac’s network. If the same image works from the iPhone but not the Mac, the image and recipient are more likely to be valid, while the Mac session, forwarding state, or local network remains a possibility.

When to contact Apple or your carrier
Contact Apple Support if blue-bubble iMessage continues to fail after checking service status, account sign-in, updates, date and time, and another network. Contact your carrier if green-bubble SMS/MMS/RCS picture messages fail from the iPhone too, or if you suspect a plan, regional-support, or attachment-size restriction. Have the bubble color, recipient type, macOS and iOS versions, and whether the image sends from the iPhone ready to share.
You do not need to delete message databases or install a third-party cleaner to follow these checks. Keep security software enabled except for a brief, controlled VPN or network test.
